Adding a commercial VPN to Qbittorrent in TrueNAS Scale 

Couple of points that held me up, super simple but due to being a pleb at TrueNAS took me a while to figure out. First to add your local user to the apps group you need to goto groups and then toggle on the default groups by clicking the top right gear, I could not find the apps group but this made it possible to find and add the user. Second, I kept getting "Unauthorized" when I would deploy the app...its a browser security issue, just clik on the URL bar and hit enter. I figure I am not the only one to stumble with these points and wanted to share. Love your series btw...I am really enjoying the process of cleaning up my Homelab by using a hypervisor in my NAS....only one box to manage now, was three (media storage/ubuntu server for docker containers/windows machine for torrents with VPN)

Everyone who is getting stuck with deploying or the app not starting you may need to disable "Enable Host path safety checks" its under the settings via application. It just removes the check when SMB shares are on for that dataset.

hey man, thanks for this video. I am new to all this docker/container stuff. Ive been using TrueNAS core for a few years, but just upgraded to TrueNAS scale, and its a whole new world. Been trying to figure out how to setup my apps to use my PIA account, but there is so much conflicting info out there about how to set it all up properly. I tried a few different methods, but they all either didn't work for me or were overly complicated. But your method, however, is so simple, i didnt even realize it could be that easy. Thanks again! This was a great video and I used it back when it came out. However, TrueCharts is no longer providing applications to TrueNAS Scale. Do you have/can you please make a tutorial to show how to add a VPN to TrueNAS's version of qbit?

I noticed that you referred to Netdata in several of your videos. Can you do a video on the netdata setup? Also, a video on Truenas Scale on how to enable a video card for transcoding (Plex) videos?

Just as an FYI, I was getting the errored status when doing a test torrent. I had the downloads folder set as a subfolder of one of my shares (/PlexServer/PlexMedia). The solution that worked for me was changing both the Host Path in the app settings on TrueNAS Core, as well as the default downlads path to just be the main share (/PlexServer). Not my ideal place for downloads but hey, it works now.

It don't look like they let you setup a VPN on the app Config page anymore!

The latest truenas says openvpn is deprecated, have you tried tailscale ? how would you know the ip, it doesn't seem to make an adapter because you have to use the userspace driver, unless there's someway to allow docker containers to make run devices? Also - the default password is not admin / adminadmin. In the new versions you have to look at the container log for a line which mentions a temporary password, I tried with Tailscale, it shows as connected but I've no idea if I should add routes or anything or how to tell if traffic is being routed over tailscale.

Can you do a video on how to do this with the official TrueNAS version of the app now that TrueCharts is going away?

Would this work for say Express VPN even though its not in the truenas selected list?

TrueNAS-13 doesnt have the option to add a addon to a jail or plugin. Does anyone know where that was moved to/replaced by?

stuck in deployment, getting this error "could not map port using UPnP: Operation not permitted" any help would be appreciated, started when I added the VPN as instructed.

I know this video is a little old but I can't solve this. I followed the tuts and had this working but now it stopped and I don't think I changed anything. I seem to be able to get the VPN connected as long as I turn off the killswitch. The actual log for qbittorrent says the ip address isn't available. It is the default one and I can't get into the app to change it because it won't deploy. Thoughts?

Hold up, I watched all your videos, and now suddenly there's an Apps dataset that the video starts right off with and some wg-easy dataset under it. I know nothing about how to set up because every time I try to do these steps, it drops me into the ACL page and I have no idea what to set or anything. And it fails when I just try because it wants some group from Bulk to have exec permissions to make the dataset. Anyone point me in the right direction?

Hi, Thank you for the clear tutorial, but I am running in to some issues. I try to install Qbittorrent stable, but is deploying for a long time. I have wanted for half an hour and tried to restart the service, have deleted it and install again and even restarted Truenas. But nothing changes with this issue. I have taken all the steps as in the tutorial off course. So now I have installed the community version and I can open the Web Portal and get in to Qbittorrent in the browser, but every time when I want to download something I get an error after a couple of seconds. I have changed the default safe path to my shared folder and followed every step as I said before, but did not change anything. I think it has something to do with the permissions, but I am not sure. I have tried to change that as well, but still getting an error. I hope someone can help me with. Thanks in advance!

I got everything working, BUT my only issue is that i cant see the files in my SMB that are downloaded and it seems like Plex cant see them either. I know this is a permission issue, but i cant see to figure out how to have other users see files downloaded or created by other users. I have been trying to fix this for a few days now and not having any luck.

Should I do this or just setup wireguard with NordVPN?

I did everything you did, and im getting a permission problem when downloading a torr, any ideas? i tried repeating the process and get the same Edit: Never mind, problem was i had the Qbit installed to Drive1 and the data on Drive2, made them both on Drive1 and it works.

Worked fine until I tried to enable PIA. I'm receiving the following error and deployment hangs. "UPnP/NAT-PMP port mapping failed. Message: "could not map port using UPnP: no router found"". Ideas? PNP is not enabled on my pFsense firewall, nor will it be. Is there some forwarding that needs to be setup on Truenas?

11:48. Does/did anyone else have issues with folders with spaces and not having it work? i'm baffled and the only thing i have different is spaces in the folders/sub folders to where my vpn file is.

i tried following these steps, in the part where you tell the container to use VPN, openvpn says (deprecated) .... what does this mean? I ignored it and continued with the rest of the steps but it just does not like the vpn configuration,. I need help

Was following along with deluge instead of qbittorrent and they seem to not be able to select the Network Interface like in QBittorrent, is there an equivalent?

after adding the VPN config setting into qbittorrent is fails to deploy. it just gets stuck, but if I set it to not use a VPN is deploys just time. Any suggestions to try.

i keep searching online for a answer but i cant find one. when i try to go into Pod Shell for qbit it tells me "WARN [0000} unable to read /etc/rancher/k3s/k3s.yaml, please start server with --write-kubeconfig-mode to modify kube config permissions error" do you and any idea what is going on there. Hello- I followed the directions, but I can only get very slow speeds- like 30-40k on the download. without the VPN connected, I get 15-30mbs. I applied the directions to deluge, and everything works as expected, terrific speeds. but i'd still like to get qbitorrent working with the VPN- what have I neglected?

Hi Lo-Res...Thanks for this tutorial. I was able to get qbittorrent working and downloading to the desired /mnt/download folder, however the only thing I can't seem to get to work is creating the vpn addon. I pretty much tried your exact steps in creating the PIA dataset, putting the .ovpn file in there, then trying to set the vpn config file location path, but it keeps on failing with the error message "Error: [ENOENT] values.persistence.config.hostPath: This path does not exist.". I've even tried putting the .ovpn file in my custom mnt which is where I download my files to as I know for sure that the path is reachable, but I still get the same error message. What I'm confused with your setup is that you created a PIA dataset and gave it permission for apps, however you don't ever add PIA in the qbittorent app storage, so how does qbittorent know how to get the vpn config file from PIA dataset if you never added it to your storage other then referencing it when adding the VPN profile?

Anyone else getting permission errors when trying to download files? The official TrueNAS app gives me no problems but the TrueCharts version does.

Make sure you don't have a "$" in your VPN password. qBittorrent will fail to start otherwise.
