First things first: Shout out to our buddy Charles75N who suggested to try the Les Trem in our November live stream. Check out his channel:

Time for some tremolo action on the Ibanez AS153 AYS. The great thing about the Les Trem II by Duesenberg is that it is installed within minutes without permanently modding your guitar (no drilling required!). It's available in nickel, chrome and gold. The price was € 98.

Thank you for a very honest review. I'm adding a Les Trem clone to an Ibanez SG. Already have a roller bridge for the build. Another option would be a String Butler for even more friction reduction. And like the Les Trem it's not a permanent mod; it's reversible and can be transferred from one guitar to another.

Hey Pete, thanks a lot for your comment. The roller bridge helps for sure, the String Butler (which I have installed on my Gibson SG and Gibson Les Paul) probably as well. Hope everything works smoothly on your Ibanez SG! Cheers, Lukas

A really useful mod that lets you get a Bigsby-like trem feature on an Ibanez hollow. I do think that putting a roller bridge on there would help with intonation and tuning stability. It helped the Bigsby on my Black Beauty Epiphone.

For bridge friction, I would just upgrade to a bridge with roller saddles tbh. I got one just to try and I'm definitely not going back to the standard outdated ToM bridge design I use an off-brand one I found on amazon it's definitely a quality accessory as it can clamp down on the post while also being much larger and more stable than the usual design

@johnnytwo-shoes9798

Someone may have mentioned this but the tuning instability would be friction at the nut with the huge lateral angle of D &G strings on the large headstock. The older Ibanez artist/artstar headstock (jsm or ar models) have less issues because the furtherest tuning pegs are closer together than the nearest to the nut, so the strings lateral break angle are straighter. I installed a bigsby onto an ar325 with no problem because of the headstock. I put a roller bridge too in the end. I have a Gretsch designed with a bigsby and similar oversized size/shape headstock to the AS models with a similar problem. Roller bridge did nothing. A new recut nut did little (went from tusq to graphite). The biggest fix was a string butler - strings go straight through the nut (your nut needs to be recut straight this way or it will snag) and then over lateral roller saddles to the tuning peg. Completely fixed the problem.
@LMGuitarCorner
@LMGuitarCorner Год назад
Hey Johnny. The angle at the nut might indeed be another (potential) issue. With my AS153, I have found that the tuning stability is much better now after installing a roller bridge. I have the feeling that the tremolo itself doesn't always go back to "neutral", which leads to being slightly out of tune. I don't know if that is because of the nut. I have a String Butler at home that is currently not installed and might put that on when I'm changing strings. Cheers, Lukas
@johnnytwo-shoes9798
@johnnytwo-shoes9798 Год назад
@@LMGuitarCorner the V4 string butler was the right one for oversized headstocks if I remember correctly- my install was over a year ago. Just remember you need to recut the nut slots to straight otherwise the string may still snag at the nut. Snagging at the nut or bridge is the reason for the vibrato arm not returning to zero point once the spring has been used a few times - it becomes a tension balancing act between string tension and spring tension (in all vibrato systems) and the snagging of strings on choke points keeps them stuck out of tune until the snag is loosened usual by pull the arm in the opposite direction. After a pitch down I would have to pull the pitch up with a bend or the bar to pull it past the snag point. I struggled with different solutions for a year but the string butler helped most, but in the mean time also try a drop of trumpet valve oil to lube up the nut and then rock the bar to get the oil in. Should keep for a week before it needs more oil - graphite on the nut didn't work as well for me as the oil

I have two of these... they both break strings (hi E, and B), but there is a fix, involving filing down some burrs in the string channel... otherwise, they work very well (roller bridges are highly recommended) ... I will be buying a small round file to work on them soon...

@LMGuitarCorner 2 года назад
Yeah I agree. In the meantime I've added a roller bridge, which definitely helped. It's still not perfect, but I think that's either because of the spring or just the fact that it doesn't go back "to neutral". Maybe I need to tweak with the spring tension again. Cheers Lukas

Hey there. I never managed to get it to work the way I want, i.e stay completely in tune. Thus, I removed it a couple of months ago. @@LMGuitarCorner Interesting, mine helped the stability of all string’s bending snd returning to pitch…. That’s a shame. I have a gorgeous looking and playing Ibanez AS103NT The only ‘bad’ thing about it is it does not have a vibrato bridge. This seems like a decent solution, but the reality is people need to have realistic expectations with these type of bridges- they will not perform even remotely as well as a locking unit But I’m hoping it would work well with flat wounds and just use it for chord voicing vibrato
@LMGuitarCorner

I also have an AS103NT. Wonderful guitar. It’s an early model with the fine-tuning bridge. I don’t miss the trem, have a Strat for that. If the guitar wouldn’t fit in the case with this trem it’s a deal breaker for me. Not carrying a 103 around in a bag.
@LMGuitarCorner
@LMGuitarCorner 2 года назад
Since I'm not carrying it around, I don't have an issue with not fitting in the case. Nevertheless, it's definitely a valid point. In terms of the trem itself - it feels different to use than the one on my Strat which is reason enough for me too have it. Cheers, Lukas

@@LMGuitarCorner Tone Pro do locking bridges as well and one with roller saddles. That would be perfect. Not that cheap though. I have a Tone Pro locking bridge on one guitar and it totally helps to stop any bridge movement even without a vibrato. Very few bridges slot onto the posts tightly with no movement.
@Dead-Eye
@Dead-Eye Год назад
Really, with trems like this you need a well cut and lubed nut, a bridge with rollers or Tusq saddles that *doesn't* rock on its posts and a straight string path over the nut. That stupid fanned-out string arrangement you get with Gibson-style headstocks is a disaster for stable tuning, especially with a trem. If people have to have guitars with that idiotic headstock design, at least get a String Butler to help minimise friction. The tuning issues in this video are mostly not down to the trem design, which is pretty sound, but due to friction points at bridge and nut, and poor headstock design.
