I love this video! I'm a beginner to wood burning. You're work is beautiful! I love the feathers with or without color, for me as an artist, color is a must, so the colored feathers would be my favorite of the two. Please keep your videos coming! 🥰

They turned out beautifully! I do like color on woodburnings as long as it doesn't take away from the actual burning and enhances it. IMO the color enhances the feathers.

I like to decorate wooden boxes, so much of my work consists of designs, borders, etc rather than detailed pictures. I often employ a "heavy-handed" technique that gives a more 3D presentation, and I almost always add some color. I particularly like to use enamel colors on the unburnt areas, and stains are interesting because they take differently on various types of burns. Your work showed me that I could be adding color to intricate pieces and not losing the burned details. Thanks a lot, very nice work!

Until recently I have not ever added color to my wood burnings. I decided to add color recently and I didn't like the way it came out. I went in search of what I did wrong and what I should be using to add a little color to my wood burnings. Your video gave me a little perspective. Thank you.

Very beautiful. I’ve used acrylic paint, ink from pens nmarkers, colored pencils and crayons are my favorite because of the blending effects. I’m about to do a Jewry box top of a drawing I did over 30 years ago. I love mixing the bold contrast of the wood burning with a slash of color to make it pop.

Very nice either way. There are soo many awesome watercolor companies these days. I also have a little travel set i really like by Sakura Koi but I don't think they make it anymore. Typically I like holbein, Rembrandt talens, and M. Graham. Also there's a color by Daniel Smith called Buff Titanium. Gives a cool aged look to the paper and it's also sold as a powder for that aged look I digress for a living😜

How do I send a picture to you of my first wood burn picture, I'd like to share it with you. I saw a comment about your skin, I have psoriasis and the arthritis that comes with it. I'm an art major and did that suck when I couldn't do drawings much anymore. I'm trying to push threw pain. My kids are grown now so I have a lot more free time to start doing all types of art again. I'm adding you to my favorite videos. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you! :) For sealing in the colour I use Varathane Diamond wood finish, it’s water based and doesn’t yellow. The most important thing is to use a spray on finish because a brush on finish would smudge the colours. And I bought a rotary tool to try that but I haven’t used it yet lol Sorry to hear about your hands, I know it’s common to get arthritis with psoriasis, so I hope that doesn’t happen too soon for me. Nice to hear you can still make art though :) If you’d like to send me a picture you can send me a message on my Facebook page or Instagram :)

@WildwoodStudio
@WildwoodStudio 3 года назад
Thanks :) I always felt that way too. I don't want my burnings to just become paintings because I think that defeats the purpose, So I try to make sure you can still see the burning under the colour, but sometimes I don't succeed :) Colouring a burning is always a risk cause you could make it worse rather than better lol

I have been drawing for most of my life and just got into wood burning a couple days ago and absolutely love it and one of the reasons is the natural color of the wood and the burn. Maybe I can stain and finish in the end but the main reason why I love it is the natural color.

How beautiful!! I've been making flower presses and researching a lovely way to put my art on them. I think a little bit of woodburning would be perfect and I love the addition of soft colour. I'm going to have to try this. Can I ask, would you seal the art afterwards and if so, what is the best sealer? I think I will have to sub!! ♥
@WildwoodStudio
@WildwoodStudio 4 года назад
Thank you!! 😊 That’s sounds so pretty, if you’re working on paper you can always burn that too, it’s exactly the same process :) for sealing my burnings (on wood) I like to use Varathane. I like it because it’s water based and it doesn’t change the colour of the wood. I’ve had finishes before that make the wood darker which really took away from the burning. It’s also easy to clean out of brushes. For burnings on paper I don’t finish them with anything. Also, any burning will fade faster if you put it in direct sunlight :)

¿Porqué no los dos? Love them both for different reasons! Thanks for giving me a better idea on how to move forward on my project! Question: How well does colored pencil and epoxy play together?
@WildwoodStudio
@WildwoodStudio Год назад
Thanks! 😊 I think the coloured pencils and epoxy should play fine, I would worry about watercolours running if there was a thick coat of wet epoxy. I always use a spray-on top coat when I do colour to prevent smudging it with a brush. I would do a test piece if I were you, before you risk smudging your art :) if it does smudge you could always try clear coating your work with a spray on clear coat to fix the colour in place, and then applying the epoxy. Epoxy sticks to most things so I don’t think clear coating it first would hurt, but it’s also worth doing a test.
@savvivixen8490
@savvivixen8490 Год назад
@@WildwoodStudio Thank you so much! I was thinking about coating my project in epoxy and UV curing it, but wasn't quite sure how the epoxy or the pencil color would behave. Sometimes media does funky things in different conditions, so I'd figure I'd ask someone who might have already crossed those bridges. ^///^ Again, thank you so very much! ☺️

I find that it doesn’t raise the wood grain much, especially if I’ve done a thorough job sanding it before I started burning.

Gorgeous, both ways, but the color is super fun! I'm working on a woodburning project for some items that will be handled regularly (think custom craft supplies). Do you think the watercolor or crayon pencils would hold up to handling in that way? Would they transfer color to fibers or hands? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, even if just speculation from your experience. Thanks!

Thank you 😊 For something that’s going to be handled often the water colours would definitely smudge and transfer since they are reactivated with water, and I think coloured pencils would too with heavy use. I’m not sure, but I feel like a few coats of a wood finish/clear coat would solve this problem, just make sure to pick a spray on one since a brush on finish will smudge your colour too. I like water based clear coats that dry crystal clear, I find they change the look of the wood less. Some other options to colour your burnings are wood stain, acrylic paint, or permanent markers. I haven’t used any of these but I’ve seen other artists use them and I think they’re probably more durable. Still a good idea to clear coat them though. :) Hope this helps
