Adding Crochet to Fabric

A question that came out of this month's Q&A was how to add crochet to an existing fabric, for example if you wanted to add a crochet border onto an item like a blanket or a tea towel, or if you wanted to add a fabric backing to a crochet cushion panel.
This is a lovely technique and is so much easier to do than you would expect. You can use it to decorate pretty much anything - you could add a crochet border to the cuff of a sleeve or a crochet collar to a sweater. You could even add a crochet detail to your favourite pair of jeans or use it to cover a hole in something! Whatever you decide I hope you will find this video useful and have some fun! Goodness knows we all need a bit of fun at the moment!

Thank you so much! The chain stitch is so much nicer than the mattress stitch, and this is the only example I’ve found.

Thank you, Janie! I want to finish a t-shirt. I will actually use the chain stitch to sew the hem on and start a skirt from there. 💫

Thank you! I knew about crocheting into a blanket stitch, but never liked the little 'legs' it leaves on the fabric. Never thought to use a sewing chain stitch, but it makes so much sense! I imagine the chain stitch attachment style might be a little bit sturdier too, given that the tighter spacing gives you more points of contact?

Look at an embroidery video, for beginners.Poke the needle through from the back. Poke it back through but leave a loop. Poke it through at the end of the loop and start a new loop.

3:19 For viewers in the US, this is what we call a half-double, rather than a "double" crochet.

If I were to use chain stitch with bulky acrylic yarn (weight 5-6) could it damage the fabric? (I’m trying to connect a hoodie sweater to my crochet project, and I’d like it to withstand a washing machine/dryer)
