This is a guide for hacking Mutable Instruments modules based on the STM32F architecture including Elements, Warps, Marbles and Clouds.
What you’ll need
- Computer that can run VirtualBox
- Plaits Module
- STM32F Development Board like [this](amzn.to/3qhxM3N)
- Headers like [these](amzn.to/3rkVhKQ)
- Jumpers like [these](amzn.to/3bj1JMC)
- Soldering Iron like [this](amzn.to/3sPvue4)
- Solder like [this](amzn.to/3kOwlZR)
- Pliers like [these](amzn.to/2MP7EQd)
If you don’t want to scratch your module’s faceplate, maybe get a spanner head screwdriver like [this](amzn.to/3bgYzci).

Note that it is not necessary to solder the header to the board. You can insert it temporarily in the 4 holes and hold it in place for the few seconds required to flash the firmware.

Also, I have fixed the incorrect file name in the online instructions. It was makefile.inc not programming.inc! But changing the programmer from the command line works just as well.

You may want a Xicon™ Knurled Nut Driver - P/N: 382-0006 rather than that spanner head screwdriver.

"SWD" stands for "Serial Wire Debug", it is similar to JTAG.

Noob question: If you can use the build environment to create a WAV (and thereby update the firmware that way), why do you even need the STM32 dev board? Thanks!

You could absolutely do that, it’s just a bit of a slow way to work. This can get a little miserable as you’re getting closer to finishing something and you’re making smaller and smaller changes, forcing you to wait for minutes every time to find out if your tiny bug fixes worked!
