Adding Kevlar Skid Plates To My Canoe

In this episode I installed Kevlar Skid plates on to my 14 year old Clipper Solitude canoe. Going into this I had absolutely know Idea what I was doing, but I think it turned out alright. It's definitely not perfect, and some perfectionist will hate it, but it's good enough for me. I needed to install these skid plates because I had slight damage to the front and rear already, and I also needed to do a little bit of fiberglass repairs while I was at it. These skid plates are made from a Kevlar felt material, and should provide great impact resistance moving forward. I probably should have done this sooner. I'm pretty sure these skid plates came from Western Canoe And Kayak In Abbotsford(westerncanoeka...), but I've seen similar products online that I assume all work the same. I also used west system epoxy from Amazon www.amazon.ca/...
I finished everything off with some white semi gloss Tremclad paint. The little can didn't quite cover the whole bottom, but it was very close, and I had the extra spray can.
I also added an Insta360 camera mount while I was at it.
Overall I am happy with how everything turned out, and I'm hoping for 14 more good years out of it!

355 degrees of motion with a 360 degree camera will do. I enjoy the video from that camera, as long as you don't make me have to move my phone around to see stuff. Looks good, nice and tough.

Every scratch has a story from your adventures on the water. Nice job extending the life of your canoe.

Good Vid - Good canoe maintenance - for future reference, Kevlar is a superior material with tensile strength that approaches Carbon fiber and a Toughness that is unbelievable (think bullet proof vest). The only down side is that it wicks water and can then delaminate, so people usually stick with fiberglass for boats, which does not wick. In your case, it's probably no factor with just 2 small areas and saturation with G-flex (a great product from West System, Bay City, Michigan). I flew a flying boat for years around Michigan with a Kevlar hull and they protected it from the water with a layer of fiberglass - it could really turn a hard hit into a dull thud - hope it works well for you Sarge. Cheers! Mike in NM P.S. they make Kevlar scissors which make it possible to cut ;)

This is good information! I was very surprised how ineffective scissors were vs this Kevlar, I was wondering how they cut it originally. It's crazy because it just feels so soft and easy to cut, but then it doesn't cut at all. Clipper makes some super sweet lightweight Kevlar canoes, I've alway wanted one, but I don't think they are actually the right boat for me. I like to run aground and smash off rocks without feeling that bad about it. I think the Kevlar ones you're supposed to be more gentle with.
