This video is a long one. But Local Tuya is one of those integrations that can get your local Tuya devices connected to Home Assistant without going through the cloud.
But in my experience it isn't as easy, and can be intimidating to those looking to get started.
So in this video I walk you through how I added support for the Dekala Arkenstone Lamp using Local Tuya.

Thanks for explaining the Local Tuya integration. I want to run the lights locally within the house but still have access to the devices via Alexa for when I'm away, and this seems to be EXACTLY what the integration does. Brilliant work!

Thanks Jeff for the tutorial. Got my Teckin SP25 years ago and I am on Home Assistance slightly less than a year. Lately I decided to switch my smart devices away from cloud as much as I can. The SP25 is always connected to their cloud server until lately I decided to give Localtuya a try as there was issue late 2021 when there was a change. I was not able to figure it out the DP_id part until your video explicitly mentioned the usage of Get Device Specification Attribute. And that explained how to add multiple entities during the control flow method.

Wow, big help adding devices via Local Tuya, you explained what I was missing perfectly. Just did one device and many of the features are there without issue. Now to rebuild most of my scripts for these new entity ID's... that is after I configure 58 more tuya devices one by one... I hope this is worth it.

Thank you for the video Jeff - you're a life saver! The only thing that I had wished could've been done with my Arkenstone was the ability to set the Alarm Time from within Home Assistant (have it set up in the app for the "sunrise" to activate 5 minutes before HA tells my Echo Show in the bedroom to turn up the volume and play some music). The closest I can work is to have all of the alarms pre-set and the one that is most applicable to my HA alarm time will turn on the correct Tuya alarm. I was also only able to activate the Snooze button from the Cloud Tuya, which comes in handy as my Withings Bed Pressure Mat is what snoozes my alarm, and my Ecobee giving a customized morning briefing when I open the bedroom door (set to detect if it's my wife or myself), and this morning briefing should also allow me to turn off the alarm (set to reactivate when HA sees that I've actually gone to bed, as opposed to just laying down in bed). Sorry for the ramble, I again thank you for this absolutely wonderful tutorial, I would certainly have been lost seeing those values had it not been for your help.

Thanks for this great no nonsense tutorial. I was new to Tuya, and needed to add a BN-Link outdoor switched receptacle to HA. Also wanted it to run locally. The only problem I had was choosing the correct data center. I'm in the US Northeast. I thought I was correct in selecting Eastern America, but Western America is the proper choice. BTW although the instructions for the BN-Link device said to use the BN-Link app, the Smart Life app works with BN-Link products.

Very helpful! I struggled with Local Tuya for many devices, specifically this exact same light. This tutorial helped me better understand how Local Tuya works so I can configure a few more additional devices I wasn't hopeful about. Question, did you find a way to represent the device color in Home Assistant? I can use the HA color picker to set the color on the device but HA does not remember that color or update for other color changes on the device.

Thank you for this comprehensive tutorial. I have couple of Tuya devices which are not ESP based, so I cannot run on them Tuya Convert. I added then to Local Tuya, but I couldn't figure out which datapoint means what in all cases, so I was missing couple of features or atributes, but thanks to you I can revisit them and make their integration more complete. Could you create a similar video on how to set up unkown Tuya devices in Tasmota?

I agree. I've got a few devices I'm going to add and a new one that I haven't yet which will get all added via LocalTuya. Now the one question I have is - can you "export" all of those setting and configurations so that they are added to the HACS LocalTuya? That way, anyone that gets the device and it gets discovered will have the values you've discovered.

Excellent "How To", thanks. I wasted two days trying to determine what each value was for (process of elimination). I wish I had seen this in advance as using your method I narrowed down what each core value represented. Like yourself with a RGBW light, I got many things working. No Color Support though: Unfortunately the light as shown in Tuya Smart App has separate controls/sliders for Whites (Cool -> Warm) vs. Color which has its own two pickers/sliders. Tuya Local does not seem to offer the field space for separate slider/pickers for both which is a shame but better than nothing. Would love to know if you found a work around on your one for colors. Thanks again.

Great Vid as always Jeff. One question for the community. Has anyone been able to get devices from the FEIT app to load. I have a downlight that I am trying to add. Evidently it is something with data centers possibly. Because when I scan the QR code when trying to link apps it fails after hitting the confirm button and says QR code expired. But if I use the smartlife app everything is ok. The limitation is the FEIT app is more integrated. Any thoughts?? Thanks in advance.

Maybe related but every time I move around on the Device page I get an error message "params illegal" I have already tried changing the data center and have checked I am in the right one. The ip doesn't have to be static to work. But if its is that would help you avoid future issues if the ip changed since you would beed to update the IP I believe in the Local Tuya config.

Hello, the Tuya website has been shuffled around and the options at 9.20 aren't there anymore so I can't find out my local key. Hi Jeff, can you give an update on the current status of your Local Tuya ? I see that there is an update in HA for LocalTuya 5.0. I am seeing issues on other Local Tuya tutorials, and issues with Zombie state. I have friends with Costco light fixtures and I am cautious about taking on the project if Local Tuya is not running stable. Your opinion would be trusted as it appears that you have worked through the set up logically and have had good results with most comments in this thread.
@SlackerLabs
@SlackerLabs Год назад
Well, I am not sure how stable it actually is. It is a bit of a hack if I understand how it works. And it doesn't always work since some of the Tuya devices seem to disable some of the local API endpoints. But I can tell you from my experience using it with the few Tuya devices I have it works well. I don't always have all the device features in home assistant but I have the basic ones that allows me to at least automate lights and other devices. Sometimes the implementation is a bit wonky, like a switch being used in place of a sensor. I have had to reload the integration once in the last 4 months because the devices went unavailable, but that was the only time I can remember that happening. I wouldn't put anything critical on it. Not sure how long it will work.but for now it seems pretty good.

@@SlackerLabs thanks for the reply Jeff. I was at my friends house the other night, and the lights are not responding to the SmartLife app. I am going to try a test with a spare light fixture at home to see if I can control the color temperature and brightness "reliably". @SlackerLabs
@SlackerLabs 2 года назад
If you are not seeing anything in that device discovery than Home Assistant is not seeing any Tuya devices on your local network. With Local Tuya there is no linking your Tuya account to Home Assistant. The integration is meant to talk to your Tuya devices over the local network. Host would be the IP address of your Tuya Device. And the Local Key you have to get from the Tuya API. It's like a "password" that allows the integration to make a connection to the Tuya Device. The Section before that one talks about how you link the Tuya API to you Tuya accounts so you can get get the Local Key. And the section of the video after the one you are on talks about how to use the Tuya API to get the local key for your devices.

I'm getting to the point of getting the local key for device from Tuya and it says "your ip don't have access to this API" *edit* My trial ended. No clue if anything can be done after the tuya trial period.

I have a lot of Tuya based devices on my network. Question. Will I loose the ability for Alexa to communicate with my Tuya device's if I implement LocalTuya.?
@SlackerLabs
@SlackerLabs 2 года назад
You shouldn’t. Since you have to connect them to the tuya app they cloud based connections still work. Local Tuya just makes the connections locally. Alexa still works and the Tuya apps still work.

@@SlackerLabs Yes but isn't the purpose here to keep the Tuya devices off the internet and run locally Only? Of course my End Goal is to have all my IOT devices to run off the Grid /Locally only. I know Amazon Alexa requires internet access to connect to the Tuya devices. So what would be the purpose of using LocalTuya if it still needs to access the outside servers? And I seem to recall even Alexa can be setup to run locally? Would Nabu Casa be the solution here? Thanks so much for your advice.
@SlackerLabs
@SlackerLabs 2 года назад
Once they are are in local tuya they don’t need the internet. You could block them from the internet and home assistant would still talk to them. You only need them in the tuya api to get the local key. Local tuya connects to them locally. Not cloud involved. The only part that needs the cloud is to get that local key.
@Musicman-50
@Musicman-50 2 года назад
@@SlackerLabs So then if they are run locally great, I understand that. But I'm thinking Alexa will no longer be able to access them once LocalTuya is fully enabled? So the bigger question is how can any device that is flashed (ie: Tasmota) or in this case simply modified to only run locally be accessable by Alexa to control them if they no longer have internet access? How could this be done? Would Nabu Casa be the solution?
@SlackerLabs
@SlackerLabs 2 года назад
@@Musicman-50 Local Tuya doesn't alter the devices. The devices are connected to your local network. By default they communicate with the Tuya Cloud. Local Tuya just enables Home Assistant to talk to those devices directly over your network without having to use the Tuya Cloud. Keeping the connection between Home Assistant and those devices completely local. But those devices still can report back to the cloud as as they have internet access. And if you want to use the official tuya skills on the amazon echo with those devices then you will have to let them communicate with the cloud. Thats the only way the Amazon echo can control those devices through the official skills. BUT if you have no need for the Amazon echo to talk to those devices and use Home Assistant as the source of control, you can block those devices from being able to talk to the internet at your router and Home Assistant will still be able to control them because with Local Tuya Home Assistant doesn't need the Tuya cloud. Local Tuya just eliminates the need for Home Assistant to use the Tuya cloud to control those devices.

I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that Local Tuya simply does not work in Home Assistant. After entering the local key you get this... "Connection to device succeeded but no datapoints found, please try again. Create a new issue and include debug logs if problem persists." Apparently this is a common problem. Any ideas on how to resolve it? Thanks, mfk
@SlackerLabs
@SlackerLabs 9 месяцев назад
Not sure how common it is. But I do know some of the tuya devices appear to have their device lockdown in terms of the api. Not sure if this is related. I also know the local keys change. I think when The device is reset. As far as resolving that I am not sure. You could see if it works with the cloud based integration. If it does then it's probably something the local Tuya Integration needs to fix. If it doesn't then I suspect the device is not using the standard api.

All didn't go well. When I click the plus to add the integration, Local Tuya is there but when I click it, I get.....Error: This integration does not support configuration via the UI. If you followed this link from the Home Assistant website, make sure you run the latest version of Home Assistant. I am running the latest Home Assistant so, I am not sure why I can't continue.

It maybe the region you choose for the cloud project. I found that it requires a specific one but I have no way of knowing which. So if you are in the one of the regions with multiple options like the US which has both eastern and western change the region of the cloud project to the other option than the one you choose. If that makes sense. So if you picked Eastern update to western. That may fix it.

Hi. I know it's off topic, but I realy need help. Could you please help me recover my Home Assistant password, please?
@SlackerLabs
@SlackerLabs 2 года назад
Oh no. The only way I know handle that is to delete the .storage folder in your home assistant config. If you happen to have ssh to your instance setup using a ssh key or a different login, you could ssh into the instance and then from the command line delete that .storage folder. Of you if you are running on a raspberry pi you may be able to plug in a keyboard and monitor and get in that way using root. But unless you have a way to get to the console/command line I dont think there is a way.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to let this work long term? Rebuild the whole project every 6 months? It seems you can only get 6 months of this for free but you have to pay $5k once your trial is over. Tuya really should have a non-business oriented subscription plan for hobbyists.

I followed Mark Watt's tutorial (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YKvGYXw-_cE.html) 2 weeks ago and managed to extract the local keys for my lights. After spending about 6 hours, I sort of got local control working for a few minutes. Then one of the lights stopped working locally and the others could be turned on/off but no longer dimmed or color controlled. I replaced the Tuya modules with ESP32 modules running Tasmota and couldn't be happier. The lights now have deeper dimming capability than originally and work reliably with local control.

Only to get the local key for your devices. As far as I know the api is the only way to get it. And of course to download the integration. But no cloud needed to control your devices once they are in the integration.
