Adding Metal Roofing Onto Portable Carport/Shelter - Harbor Freight Shelterlogic

As the years have gone by the tarp cover on our portable carport that covers our chicken run has progressively gotten more and more stretched out and was to the point where it would collect rain and snow rather than shed it off. This presents a huge problem in winter, threatening to collapse if you don't stay on top of clearing any built up snow or ice quite often. So this year I started searching for some cheap (or free) metal roofing in anticipation of improving our chicken run carport.
I struck gold when I found 20 used 8'x3' sheets for $40 on FB Marketplace. Normally these sheets would run $35 each at the box stores so I was stoked! I only used 14 of them and cut those all down to about 5.5' long using a Diablo Steel Demon blade on my 7 1\4" skilsaw so I have a few extras for other projects. Next I bought (6) 2"x4"x20' for $95 and a bag of roofing screws for $30 at a local lumber yard. Lastly I needed some shorter 2"x4" boards to used as cross supports so I hit my scrap wood storage shed and gathered a bunch of random length boards. With all the materials gathered I pulled out the tools and started the project!
****1.5 MONTH UPDATE****
We've recieved over 48" of accumulated snowfall since doing the roof and the carport has held up very well. It had about
12" on it in one day before we used a roof shovel to get the bulk of it off. That amount of snow would have most definitely collapsed the canopy if the tarp top was still on it and I hadn't done the metal roof. The roof does not have a steep enough pitch to constantly shed snow so there is still some maintenance required but there's peace of mind knowing that I don't have to worry about it collapsing if we get a snow storm over night while I'm not tending to it.

The one and only video I watched that was completely what I needed to know without having to listen to some idiot go on and on about things pertaining to nothing that helped me know how to put a roof on my tubular metal carport. Thank you for having respect for my time and especially patience. I liked and subscribed to return the respect.

I have small tarp shed abt 6 ft tall. I've been wanting to convert it all to metal, roof and walls. I just want a place to store my ATV. This helped a lot although the cross "bars" will have me ducking once I'm inside. But again, it's to park my ATV and I'll be sitting down while I'm riding it in. My biggest hurdle will be a door that I can close and lock.

Why leave the wood on the edge exposed? Wouldn’t that lead to the wood rotting quicker from prolonged exposure to moisture
@marieemarch
@marieemarch 5 месяцев назад
Why didn’t you just clamp the top ridge board instead of screwing it. You could use pipe clamps/c to attach boards instead of drilling through the pipe. Add ridge cap as you go.

It's true you can do several things to make a port-a-garage more sturdy and weatherproof. Here 's my question. Given the work and expense one has to put into making these modifications (even used metal isn't cheap anymore, unless you stumble on the occasional "once in a lifetime" deal ), why not just build a simple wood frame building? Roof it with thin plywoodcovered with a tarp. I build one like that a few years ago and it's still going strong.
@brianbailey462
@brianbailey462 10 месяцев назад
with a tarp you need to continually replace it
@nmartin5551

Where I live,the zoning police would be more likely to alert to a wooden structure. Even the poles andtarp are a violation of how the local government wants me to use my land, but this would be more easily sneaked.

One big problem with those frames is they are thin metal, not coated on the inside and will rust out in just a few years.
@chrishemingway4491

You even have the purlings already built out for the gable ends I would close them in that would help a lot I did the same thing and just upgraded the metal by adding tubs inside the frame tubes and it turned out great I even cemented it into the ground people don’t know there options they got when they actually open there mind up and explore and think outside the box

If you start laying the roof from left going right it will save u time sliding it u under each sheet
@NorthIdahoCarpenter
@NorthIdahoCarpenter 2 года назад
It would but I wanted to do that so that the sheet wouldn't slide down as I was working on positioning it and screwing it off. Also I wanted my last piece, a ripped sheet, to be down at the end where we can't see it or touch a cut edge. It was just best to do it this way for my application.

I'm considering buying the HF shed and adding strength to roof as you did. I need to mount 6 solar panels each weighing 14 pounds. Do you think the roof and vertical tube will support 84 pounds + roof lumber + snow ? I'm certainly am considering running 4x4 ground anchored poles parallel to the vertical pipes, so my main concern is the pipe joints on roof. Any advice would be appreciated and I understand it's just an estimate, if it all caves in its my bad... last question, can you estimate the roof angle ? Thx

I've never measured but I believe the roof is about a 4/12. The carport feels very stout and strong but I don't have any idea what it could hold. With metal it looks perfect until you hit the threshold and it just instantly collapses. Typically wood has more give and you can see it starting to bow before it comes crashing down.
@NorthIdahoCarpenter
@NorthIdahoCarpenter Год назад
The harbor freight carport also has the smallest diameter and thinnest poles of all the carports so I dont think of build it with one of them. Risky.

Why didn’t you go all the way to the end of the wood for the hang over I would have or I would of cut the wood flush it looks good but the wood sticking out looks dumb although it’s just a chicken coop I just like to do my best work always it looks good though but yea cross members would be good I would just take conduit flatten the ends by hammering them flat then screw them in your gable then like every other at the top or every 2 I would put piece of plywood for stronger structure for even more structure you can make half gables accross the top that would keep wind out and structure it a lot also
