ADDING NEW FISH to XL DISCUS AQUARIUM! (will they survive the attack?!) | MD Fish Tanks
The cyanobacteria & algae fight continues...the problem is low flow down below. This could be fixed with a wavemaker, or you can add bottom dwelling fish that get the sand moving constantly as they scavenge around....that's what we are going to do :)

Why dont you add one fast growing Stem plant in the discus tank ? When you add them in the back of the islands and not in between the layout wont change that much. It will help against algae also a lot.

Seachem's Excel is good at keeping this at bay, increase the oxygen in the tank. You could use H2O2 and apply using a syringe directly on the Cyanobacteria.

M🍃 if you want to chill it out then you need to cut your feeding back and the amount of hours your lights are on. You could even purchase a dimmer and scale the lights back. Its definitely a light issue and feeding issue 👍

Looks amazing. Just proves you don't need fancy expensive plants and co2 injection for an amazing looking tank. I like the emphasis being on the discuss and not the plants which most of the time seem to melt away unless your conditions are perfect. And I'm bored of paying £30 plus for a co2 cannister every few months. You've just converted me to get rid of the co2 completely and swap over to easy plants.

Would suggest a max of eight hours on that tank. Plants don’t need more, fish certainly don’t, being largely black water inhabitants naturally. Also, and I don’t claim to be an expert, but I would recommend feeding the similar amount but in stages. Fish are rummaging because they have no time to ‘catch it all’. Plus it will become habitual rather than necessity, so stop when they no longer chase in the water column. Finally, maybe add a pair of Bolivian Rams - would add totally different behaviours, plus a gorgeous fish! Would not over populate before you need to upgrade tank size, which you definitely will when they add a couple of inches each! Keep it all up though - your passion is amazing! (Discus keeper, breeder and award winner of 20 years).
@RooStarFishTanks

One suggestion... Those canister filters are sweet but the only thing I notice is you have two skimmer type intakes that only remove debris that floats to the top. Maybe doing one canister with a lower normal intake ...??? Then the debris that is near the bottom like that algae can be picked up?

MD i have the same pipe set and ive put a rubber o ring on the plastic tube where it enters the stainless pipe to stop the skimmer being pulled down to far witch was casing to much food going into the filter and also air was being drain into the filter. it gives you fine adjustment of the skimmer by moving the o ring up and down the tube.

If you can’t remove the cyano, you could use erythromycin, which is an antibiotic. It could be dangerous for fish and filter media, so i would only use it as last resort. Also it could make the cyano bacteria resistant to the antibiotic, so there are risks.

you could elongate the output of the oase 600 in your discustank, for it to reach lower and create a flow closer to the substrate. If you think this will prevent the cyano plaques. Sometimes its light dependent. good luck!:)

You should only use ceramic media for your biological filtration media in canisters. You're dealing with very little space and you'd want to maximize surface area in your media. Ceramics are good for that. Plastic media dont give a lot of surface are, they just allow better flow which is good for sumps but is practically useless in canister filters. Also K1 media are for fluidized filters not for mesh bags.

I have a video about, it when I first started my 175 I had a massive problem with cyano. tried everything, but this product. Dose 1 day, then dose second day then wait. I never saw cyano in that tank ever again. Best producyt ever. Because I tride 3 other brands, they took it away a little bit or, took it away but then it comes back. But Ultra Life, magic powder.
