The clamp seems unsafe as the rope can potentially slip through it or the metal tabs could potentially open up freeing the rope. The rope clamp is potentially a point of failure.
This was great until the second end was attached. I attach the second end back to the bottom rung. Otherwise rope piles up at the bottom of the ladder creating a safety hazard. Both ends of the rope should be attached to the same bottom rung.
If both ends of the rope are connected to the same ladder wrong then doesn’t that essentially lock the ladder in the closed position and allow no travel of any of the parts including the rope??😊
@@iComplainer He means go around the bottom of the last wrung and back up to the wrung the other end of the rope is on. That makes the bottom wrung like a second pulley and the rope moves in a circle, eliminating any slack to trip on. The rope acts more like a conveyor belt if that helps picture how it works.
Hey Chris, wouldn't you rather route the rope correctly so the excess doesn't hang down when you extend the ladder? I had to fix our companies ladders after someone routed it that way. Wrap the return end of rope back down around the bottom of the bottom section and secure it to the fly section next to your first rope clamp.
This was a terrific video - clear and easy to follow. I had to replace the rope on my extension ladder, so it was great to have this as a resource. I was able to get all of the material I needed at the hardware store to do the job, and finished the project in less than 15 minutes.
Good video! I also use a cable tie on each end so it holds the rope in the middle of the rung. That way the rope can't slide from side to side on the rung and get tangled in your feet. Good job!
Excellent instructional video, just put put the rope and pulley on, which the ladder never had in the first place, made life easier. Thank you. Dave (England)
Thank you for this!!! I was panicking -- I have to learn to tie a bowline to restring my ladder? Nope -- get a rope clamp!!! Just subscribed to your site. I look forward to learning how to deal with projects around the home and appreciate you sharing :)
Thanks for taking the time to make the video. Most helpful I have just bought a secondhand ladder I'm restoring it as it was in poor condition without a rope or pulley at the top and I had no clue as to how to attach the rope. Thanks once again
Thanks very much for this. I have a 10 metre triple extension ladder without any rope fittings. Do you have any advice on adding a rope to such a ladder? Thanks again.
Great video on re-roping a ladder...probably the best on RU-vid. I've used your method w/no issues at all. Do you have any videos on replacing or repairing the ladder locks or pulleys? Would be helpful. Thanks again.
I have everything to do my ladder today. You explained good how to do this, BUT the camera always wandered away and wasn`t showing where it should should have up close. I watched some parts a few times and now know how to do the job. THANKS!
well geez if you're gonna do it like that, why even bother with the clamps and the pliers, why not just get a rope and tie it on one end and then on the other hehe I know you meant well, but seriously , this is a very amateur way to rope your ladder, its' a very careless way as well, also causing un needed hazards in saying that, ..... it was still a good video and i'll give you the fact that you went into clear explanations , i'm just saying it could've been a more professional job by using pulleys at the top and bottom and not attaching the rope to the fucking rung for gods sake,. all in all, it was an ok video, just not too well thought out
Thank u. Im not able to extend my mothers aluminum ladder. The rope deteriorated and it was prickly. Tried opening runs and couldnt. However u know the metal pieces as u go up on each rung mine do not look like yours. Mine is probably from the 60s.
Thank you. My stock rope snapped other day while extending, was on last rung and it snapped , ladder came down super fast I’m amazed nothing bad actually occurred. Thanks for the detailed video. Ignore those saying too much info or too long. Be safe out there.
I would caution against using poly rope. I can pull and pop the polyester inside easily. Parachute rope has s much higher braking strain but a but thinner (unless you can find 6mm)
I got a good one for you guys ,I bought a 40ft Werner Pro ladder Aint no way you are opening that up yousing the Rope , You'd have to be Hercules it's really fun ny to me .
Hey man I seriously don't mean to ask a stupid question, but why do you need a rope for an extension ladder? I just push up the extension with my hands and let it down with my hands. Please explain.
So far I’ve watched five rope ladder videos and not a single one of them showed the rope going through the top of the ladder. Does it have to have a pulley? How does it hook to the top? I have a ladder with no rope no Pulley. And nobody’s video shows the top of the ladder.
Thanks for mentioning that there is more than one way to attach or not attach the rope. Other videos only mention the method the presenter likes or knows.
Either your ladder is remarkably light or you are very strong. You raised and moved the ladder with no apparent effort. Is there any reason to not wax the upright rails to help them slide easily.
Thanks! Im a single woman home owner. My rope on my ladder deteriorated last summer and came apart and didn’t even know how to fix it. Now I can! Thanks a bunch!!!!
I got a Louisville ladder and the rope is run the same way but connected to the same location with both ends. There no loose rope when it’s fully extended
A loop at the bottom is a waste of time.. you have to pull the entire length threw it. Just tie a Bowline knot. And attaching the other end is not helpful... You can't use the rope to tie on to the building or skaffold.
Thanks for the lesson. This operation can be very confusing when you don’t know how (the old me), but so easy when carefully explained (to the new me).
Nicely presented vid. Now if only all instructional videos on RU-vid were as detailed as this one. I have to replace my rope that went missing when I loaned the ladder out
Thanks a lot. Just tried to re-thread, no sale. Wondered if anyone else had same problem. Googled, and there you were. Using a fiberglass Werner, may switch to aluminum (gettin' old).
Hey brotha! Been a fan for years. and your videos have helped make me money and learn a ton. I appreciate ya Chris, real talk. On the note of this video, I was searching for rope and it just popped up on Google. I didn't see it was by you, until your face showed up. A pleasant surprise. So to add to reasons why its a good idea to replace ropes when they start to fray, and the reason I am here in the comments is the following: Once the ropes start to fray they lose their a bit of their working load limit, and if you have a 26' fiberglass ladder that is 3/4 of the way extended, you don't want that dang rope snapping and the ladder crushing your hand. Ask me how I know... Keep it up man, and y'all keep on keepin on!
I put the rope away in storage to avoid damage since my ladder stay outside expose to the environment. I couldn't remember how to be installed back; thank you for your tutorial, save me a headache.
Clear instructions. I opted to loop it to the bottom rung. Only issue I had was the rope stretches. Perhaps because my ladder is a 40’ and heavier? Will try with a different type of rope and see if that works better…
Nice video. This is not a criticism, but I have two other problems: First, my ladder hooks do not move freely (and spring back). I've tried WD40. Second, the pulley is gone, and I am unsure which rung is its home. I guess I can order the missing rubber foot (from the top) online, once I find the maker indicator.
Great vid it helped ladder works great now I was having problems with my ladder I bought new because the had the loop on wrong side it wasn't hooked up on bottom rung of ladder that needs to go up but works now love ladder now
Thank you for showing us how to restring an extension ladder! When you are ready to move a ladder, you should try “Ladder Mover” for the easiest way to move any size and type of ladder. Thanks for posting!
Is the red rope and the yellow the same? At HomeDepot there is a rope like you are holding is red looking like you have (stretches) then a yellow rope which seems to have less give? Is it mad bad? Thx
Thanks, Chris! I was getting set to play Suzy Homemaker when the rope on my 24' extension ladder broke. Project delayed, but not denied. So good to know the fix is both simple and something a non-professional can do!
I do not use my 24-foot ladder much but finally the rope broke luckily after I locked my ladder. Then I found this video to fix the original cheap rope. Thank for posting this video.
Followed your suggestions to the letter. Same exact rope/clamps at HD. Now I have a ladder with a great rope that should last for years! Thanks so much!!!
Good video man !! Question, I see some ladders have the excess looped back around the bottom rung, so the excess just gets pulled up with the extension. The only down side I can think of is foot tangle potential on the whole ladder instead of a smaller section? Any other reason I'm not thinking of? I also put a small bolt through the rail by the foot, so the extension stops there instead of the end caps being the stop, that way the end caps won't eventually get brittle and break on contact Thanks !
This is the best I've seen so far as to how to replace the rope on a ladder. Others have you going around the bottom rung of the stationary part back to the bottom rung of the moving part. This looks like it would wear out the rope as there is no pulley on the bottom rung. Thanks for this great video from somebody who used his ladders on a daily basis. Keep up the good work!
Wonderful video .. thank you very much! I had re-rope a ladder.. You are a good teacher with very thorough and complete instructions.. My fault for securing the rope on the wrong section of ladder.. lol.. but I got it correct.. Thanks again! :)
I just restrung my ladder today (did it wrong so I get to do it again tomorrow). Thanks for the video. If you dont have a rope clamp, a simple square knot will do the trick. (right over left, then left over right)
Thanks. Really good explanation, a rarity. One day someone will study how many injuries are prevented by clear instructions and safety practices from the web vids. Many of yours will make the list.
