Can't believe this video is still up. Tying the two ends together will make the ladder useless. It won't move the rungs more than a couple of inches. Doesn't Bauer Corporation ever review these "instructional videos" ?

Glad I read the comment about the bottom rung because I was thinking huh? Tying to the bottom rung worked fine. Just for grins I tried it tying as in the video in case i misunderstood; ladder didn't work.

Actually the instructions are correct. He should had tied the loose end of the rope to the same rung as the other end had been tied. The rope then would have acted like a conveyor

What material is the rope made of ?

My manager needed to see this after he tried getting us to manually extend an extension ladder because “the rope gets in the way” and we clean windows!!

Does the rope play a role in safety? Or is it just for pulling up the extension? When the latches disengage for no reason on their own while working up there, you find yourself going all the way down to the bottom and hitting the ground if you are lucky or worse, you die. How do you block the extension from coming down on its own?

Your ladder has to already be equipped with the two rung hooks that can be seen in the video as the demonstrator passes the rope through between the center of the two ladder sections. They can be seen on either side of the ladder @ 1:23. Those hold the ladder sections as desired and makes them sliding down as you describe impossible. If your ladder doesn't have these, buy another ladder.

@@iComplainer , I have the two rung hooks. This is not the problem. The problem is that the manufacturers of these products rely too much on people doing things correctly, in other words, it is not idiot proof. Those two rungs you mentioned swing in and out. If you raise your ladder straight up without paying attention to the distance between the wall and ladder feet, I guarantee you that with the vibrations on the ladder as you go up or while you are on it up there, they will swing out taking you down with it. This is a common mistake people make… The ladder has to come out 1 foot for every 4 feet of height. You get this wrong, you will either injure yourselves or you may die. There needs to be a better way to insure those two rungs never disengage until I want them to disengage… I hope this explains what is going on…

This video is a joke. The way this guy tied the ladder guarantees that it won’t extend. This is the correct way to re-string an extension ladder so it operates like a conveyer: 1) Buy a rope with a clamped loop on it (i.e., Amazon, AC30-2 extension ladder rope replacement compatible with Werner extension ladders up to 40 feet). 2) Loop the rope under the bottom rung of the fly side of the ladder (the portion that extends) and string it through the loop. 3) String the rope up the ladder between the fly and base sections toward the pulley. 4) String the rope through the pulley and run it down the back side of the base section. 5) String the rope under and over the bottom rung of the base section and back up through the loop cited in the first two steps. 6) Snug up the two ropes and secure them with one or two rope clamps (i.e., Home Depot 140112).

As instructional videos go, this is terrible. The reason why everyone is commenting that "tying the two ropes together" will lock up the ladder and prevent if from extending ...is because you never demonstrate actually extending the ladder with a close up of the rope "slipping through" the other coil of rope. Also, people commenting are right: that little knot tied at the end and then used to "pop into" the final loop of the coil is bound to just "pop out" because its not actually secured. So the whole thing will almost immediately unravel just moving the ladder from one spot to the next. Advice: if you're going to show a strange and unconventional way of tying a rope ladder that is different from what everyone else does (including manufactures), then you owe it to your audience to have a verbal dialog and explain how it works and why you think that loose rope coil with no knot won't just all unravel 10 minutes later.

At the end he ties the rope around both sections and around both rungs on the ladder not using the bottom rung and doesn't tie a knot? This will lock the ladder and rope in place, and even if it worked you couldn't extend the ladder all the way. ??????? duh!

Yep but that's a way to transport the ladder preventing it from extending, and he probably intends to use the rope loose, not in a loop, so it does work. Its just not the usual way telescopic ladders come assembled, and its certainly not the only way to set it up.

Thanks for the view and comment. Yes you are right, tying the rope as shown at the end of the video is meant to keep the fly section from moving when closed and in the storage position. To use the ladder, once it's in place, untie the rope and pull it to extend the fly section. After use, descend the fly and retie as shown at the end of the video.

The two runs of rope are not tied together, one slips through the coils of the other one. Look closely before commenting.
