Adding USB-C to Game Boys

Finally got around to making this video about USB-C! These boards from ‪@makho‬ and @MartinRefsethHDR are perfect for adding to Game Boy projects.

Glad to see that people found a use for the breakouts :) Edit: the resistors seem to be the wrong value, the linked ones are 5.1 Ohm's the resistors should be 5.1K Ohm for the two CC lines, those resistors won't really matter unless you want to use certain usb c cables (C to C)

Great job on the editing/ presenting and keeping things concise with this one! I have really enjoyed the ASMR aspect of your voice and methodically talking through different fixes more slowly before. But this style is great too and maybe more algorithm friendly.

Hey, nice work. I would recommend you using flux when soldering. It would tremendously help when tinning the small pads as the solder will stick to them ways easier.

Remember to use flux on the board when desoldering to help aid in the removal of the charging port then use some soldering wick to remove any excess solder on the board once you’ve done that you can follow his next steps and dont keep the soldering iron on the board for too long!!

Well i'm not an expert in soldering ( it is quite a while since i last soldered something) but i feel like using flux would help greatly with your soldering.

Hey Sean I'm using a nimh charging board to charge 2 AA nimh batteries. So after I charge them fully. The light turns off and while that's great, for some reason when I unplug it and plug it back it starts to charge ALL over again for another hour or so is that normal with these nimh boards?? Or did I get a faulty one? Thank you for the video, very informative!

Almost for fun I'd of made the USB C port work as a Gameboy share data cable as well. looks like you could just used the to data lines on the little board to add to the data link cable connecter that way you have option when wanting to trade pokemon or do multiplayer things with gameboy without having to hunt for data link cables but Amazing little set of kit there.

Do they have complete boards available in usb female so there’s less for me to solder /mess up. Like perhaps the ones you put together but pre built ?

Hmm there might be a modder out there who would be willing to put some together, but I’m not sure where to get any high quality ones like these pre-built unfortunately.

My question now: can i use something else from the nintendo to repair a gameboy? Thx for your videos and help. Greetings from Germany ✌🏼

Yep! They're perfect for Game Boy projects because of their size and they're super high quality.

Would this power the Gameboy without any batteries? Or is it just to charge up the batteries?

You could set it up to power a Game Boy with it, but the main idea is for charging batteries. If you're using the charger board shown in my other video, it gets very hot so that one is not ideal for playing and charging batteries at the same time.

Why don't you use some blu tack or something to secure that little board in place? I would freak out working on it that way. 😅

@@esotericsean Yeah these things aren't that great. With big and hot soldering blu tack maybe will get nasty, but for small stuff like this it's ideal.

I've been using the TP4056 for a while now, but that one only supports LiPo, so I switched to using these NiMH charging boards (that also support LiPos): www.aliexpress.com/item/4000038198260.html
