Pyramind sound design instructor Chris Gear goes over using additive synthesis in Serum. He begins with a brief definition of additive synthesis, demonstrates how to achieve it within Serum, and ends with a discussion about how to create with intention and put additive synthesis to use in your production workflow.

Just realized that this is OhmLab! Holy crap! This guy basically invented synth tutorials online so many years ago. Unbelievable that he's with Pyramind now. I basically learned everything I know from his stuff. Imma go through all their videos now. Best freaking sound design tutorials ever. More of these please! Also, do a live stream or class or something on Serum!

At 5:45 you ask the golden question: how do we create a useful sound? The concept is straightforward, the application...not so much. Image Line's Sytrus is the only soft synth I've ever been able to create a useful sound with an additive process. Conversely, Image Line's Morphine is a nightmare.

Out of curiosity, what makes Sytrus easier to create a "useful" sound? I never used it.

That's an interesting use of Sytrus. It is an FM synth but the manual says: "The 6 user-definable operators can act as independent oscillators for subtractive synthesis, cross-modulate to create complex FM (Frequency Modulation) or RM (Ring Modulation) synthesis or the 256 partial harmonic editor can be used to additively synthesize virtually any timbre you can imagine. With up to 64x oversampling Sytrus delivers 100% epic sound. " (which it does) I adore Morphine and use it constantly for its instrument emulation. The instruments sound synthetic but fantastic. At some Uni in the USA they have spent a year working on a bassoon patch. It would be great if there could be patches that emulated every orchestral instrument. The Resynthesis engine is awesome and you can get some great things. Harmor, also an additive synth by Maxx Claster, was voted one of the top five softsyths by Music Radar users. I have used the image resynthesis in Harmor to get some cool sounds., but I don't like Harmor nearly as much as Morphine.

I think additive synthesis is a fantastic way to learn about sound. It's simply amazing how sine waves are fundamental blocks of music, equivalent to prime numbers in mathematics or atoms for elements, and all you have to do is understand the three parameters of frequency, amplitude, and phase.

I may be a little late to the party, but how is this not FM synthesis? You are modulating the initial sine wave with another sine waves and not adding oscillators together, rather affecting the one frame (cycle) with other waves. I am thinking to the routing of Ableton's Operator - when I select the aligned routing algorithm (first choice in Operator) it is FM synthesis with A routing to B, B to C, and C to D. My understanding is the last algorithm within Operator is additive synthesis where the four oscillators work in parallel to combine into a full timbre. So wouldn't it be additive synthesis in Serum if I triggered the two oscillators to work in parallel and turn off the filter section vs editing the frames like this? There is no way to not shape the VCA as Envelope 1 in Serum is the amp ASDR envelope by default which you mentioned is subtractive in nature. Thank you for the video, I would love your feedback as I am sure I have missed something being self taught in all aspects of music. Cheers!

Old comment but just to clarify, he is not modulating the frequency of the initial sine wave. He is adding additional sine waves which in turn affect the output wave. This is shown clearly at roughly 2:30.
