@@GabrielRodriguez-um8fi I was in my teens when he was our President. I thought he was a decent and principled man who tried to heal the country after Watergate and Vietnam. He deserved to be elected in 76.
The brief presidency of Gerald Rudolph Ford-a gentleman of consistent honor/honesty/character/integrity/principle-was a refreshing change from the scandal ridden presidency of his immediate predecessor-Richard Milhous Nixon.
His pardon of Nixon was very controversial at the time, and it very likely cost Ford the 76 election but I think looking back it was the only thing and the most appropriate thing to do.
Jerry Ford….the right man at the right time. Anyone ever get to visit his Library/Museum and Burial Place in Grand Rapids I highly recommend it, no matter party affiliation. Humbling and honest, as he was and will be remembered as. RIP
Sorry about the duplication. How about this unification of congress. Presidents Ford & Carter will always remain my inspiration. I will always dream. Hold them dear to my heart. Only i can let my dreams die...
If the 1976 election had been held 1 week later, Gerald Ford would have probably won. He almost caught Carter at the end. Other things that might have changed the outcome: 1. The pardon of Nixon. 2. Dumping Rockefeller as his VP. 3. A more hearty support of ERA, rather than lukewarm support.
Ford was a good man but believe his party knew they made a mistake after the 76 convention in nominating Ford and not Reagan. The election most likely would have turned out differently.
@@MrDuds1984 I felt exactly the same way at the time. For forty years I was sure Reagan would have beaten Carter easily, but more recently, I've wondered if any republican could have won that year. People today don't appreciate just what an emotional hot topic Watergate was, even before Ford doubled down on it with The Pardon. In 1976, the press coverage on Ford was almost all negative. He had deprived them of their vengeance on Nixon, and they transferred their hatred of Nixon to him. Anything bad went immediately to the front page of the papers and the no. 1 spot on the evening news; and if there was anything good about him, we didn't hear about it. In fact, it's only in the last few years that Ford's image has been cleaned up a little. So if somebody had to lose to Carter, maybe it was better that it be Ford.
Nelson Rockefeller would be VP by the of the year due to 22nd amendment. Carl Albert the speaker was next in line for succession, during Nixon and Ford’s presidency.
Vice President Al Gore almost became president in 1999 but Clinton didn’t resign. I feel like if Gore took over today’s violent politics would not be happening. Republicans would be normal good people you could easily disagree with but there would be civil debates and not the Trump Desantis violent political campaigns. It would be completely unacceptable like it was 20 to 40 years ago.
I'm not sure that things would be better if Gore had become president. I don't know much about DeSantis, I really dislike Grump, but I feel the Democrats have done much to undo democracy. I think Chris Christie would be a good president, better than the flop we have now. Yet I see Biden as having a kind personality.
