Environmental Justice Part 1: Environmental Justice Part 1: Addressing food justice and environmental justice through culturally grounded and land-based interventions
The Wayne State University School of Social Work will kick-off our Environmental Justice three-part series on November 17, 2022 with an interactive session "Addressing food justice and environmental justice through culturally grounded and land-based interventions" discussing the connections between food justice and environmental justice led by keynote speaker Michael Spencer, PhD. Spencer shared his research projects working with Native Hawaiian communities to address historical and structural injustices that have led to concentrated poverty, food insecurity, and disconnection from land. Through culturally grounded and land-based interventions, Native Hawaiians are empowered to reconnect with their culture, their community, and their environment. The event with also featured breakout groups by local Detroiters discussing the roles that social workers could serve in local environmental justice and food justice spaces: Anjanette Davenport Hatter, Amy Kuras, Julie Rice, and Danielle Todd.
