I think we should reasonably expect at least 1 non-English language film to make the Best Picture lineup as well. We've had at least 1 for the last 6 years in a row (with 3 being nominated in the recent ceremony alone).
@@rinedgecombe8165 yes. Apparently more dialogues were in Korean. It qualified for BAFTA and Golden Globe for Best Non-English Language Film categories (and got nominated for both).
Saoirse Ronan has The Outrun coming out and Steve McQueen‘s Blitz It will be her fifth nomination, probably for Blitz. She had 4 Oscar nominations before she was 25. I think it’s going to be her year
Gladiator should not even be in the Oscar conversation. Scott still has it as far as visual storytelling, but he’s lost the magic when it comes to his characters. I was skeptical about The Apprentice, but I’ve seen the story being described as “Faustian” and that sounds amazing. My father also knows weirdly a lot about Roy Cohn and he was like, “He invented Trump. We would not have Trump without Roy Cohn.” So the title being “The Apprentice” is a double entendres and I’m intrigued and I think Jeremy Strong might be up for supporting.
I'm not a Ridley Scott fan so I agree. I think he's far too inconsistent to be called "great." But if he's going to do anything good this late in his life, it'll be Gladiator 2.
Really curious to see how Challengers does once it comes out in theaters. I know it doesn't feel like an Oscar-type of film but Luca Guadagnino directing makes me pause and wonder if it could be. If it does well, this could also boost Zendaya's odds having both that and Dune 2 out this year.
It's incredible how this year we have 4 film sequences (Joker, Mad Max, Dune and Gladiator) that had many nominations at the Oscars. If they maintained their technical quality it will be a year without much space for other films to be nominated in the technical categories. Just like your mother, Gladiator is my favorite movie ever... I'm worried about this sequel being a Fast and Furious set in ancient Rome... that really wouldn't be what I was expecting from this movie unfortunately.
I dont think inside out 2 will be bad but everyone forgot that the oscars are sequel bias unless is toy story. Like we had incredibles 2 and across the spiderverse but they lost. Inside out 2 will probably be nominated but i dont think it will win

I think Dune: Part Two can get the same amount of nominations as it’s predecessor if not a little more. Denis will likely get into Best Director after they egregiously snubbed him for Part One. If he doesn’t have enough competition to face, he could win. Or a possibility of him staying strong for the rest of the year despite coming out in Spring like the Daniels. I’m on the fence if it can get in for acting like Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson or Javier Bardem. I don’t know if any of them can get in. But for wishful thinking, I would love to see Austin Butler get in for Supporting Actor.
I'm really hoping for Austin Butler to get in for Supporting Actor, and then that could open the door for Timothee in Messiah, where he'll probably have a bit more of a dramatic role that will impress critics with subtlety.
I think A Real Pain is going to be a bigger player than most people think. I currently have it winning Original Screenplay, Supporting Actor (for Kieran Culkin), and Best Picture.
maybe call it recency bias or whatever but i think civil war could maybe be a potential player, i wasn't even that big on the movie but critics were mostly positive and it's all anyones been talking about online, even people i know who aren't big into movies want to go and see it now, if the conversation is kept for a while i could see it maybe getting some noms
I don’t think so, Civil War is way too on the nose with its politics and in a election year with everything else I know they don’t want another possible “Glazer” moment
Definitely make a point of watching Holy Spider as soon as you have the chance. Also, Hundreds of Beavers for Best Picture! (Yes, I kid... but watch this as well!)
Holy Spider and Border are both great, and I really like Abbasi's first feature, Shelley, too (some people might have a problem with the movie not explaining things, but it's a great horror anyway). Abbasi is an amazing director, you always can recognize his style even though all his films so far have had different genres, languages, casts and topics.
Ridley Scott, track record going towards questionable for sure. . . but his career track record is undeniably MUST SEE. 🤷 Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, the Martian, The Last Duel. Bangers
The Apprentice focuses on Trump's relationship with Roy Cohn. I don't see how that movie could work if directed by Adam McKay, snce he makes satirical comedies, and I don't see that genre working for a story where your second lead dies of AIDS in 1986.
Civil War has to win best sound. It has the greatest gun sound effects ever put to any action film, war film, or any film that has at least one scene with a gun
What are we thinking about Inside Out 2? Arguably, the first Inside Out was the animated movie closed to getting into the Best Picture line-up since it last happened. And that last movie to get that nod was also a Pixar sequel in Toy Story 3. And the reactions out of early press & CinemaCon screening do sound very strong. The pipe dream of an animated movie getting that Best Picture nod sounds like a broken record, but come on: We've got to get an animated movie in there again. It's been way too long
You forget that the oscars are sequel bias. The toy story wins were , well the third was very good deserving but the fourth won because it was toy story.I really want a animated to be nominated but i doubt and they will probably snub it and give to a non sequel one with wold robot or Lord of the rings.
"Are they really gonna snub him for best director again?" Man, I am so worried about that... I can see this snub happening, I can see it, and I do think the 3rd "Dune" movie being in the works is going to hurt the chances "Dune Part 2" at the Oscars AND it's going up against "Furiosa" in technicals. "Wicked" looks absolutely awful, I don't know what people are seeing in that trailer. I LOVE the musical itself, but the trailer looked like CGI mush.
Here are my thoughts regarding Sam Jackson: I don’t think he’ll win. He might get nominated, but I don’t think he’ll win. That does mainly come from him being nominated at the Tony’s and not winning but I think there’s more to it than that. I was doing some research and throughout all of the productions, his role never gets nominations. John David Washington’s character gets nominated A LOT, Danielle Deadwyler’s is consistently nominated as well. The critics groups with this latest production nominated Ray Fisher a LOT which tells me his role is big. Michael Potts was also picking up some critic nominations. But the only time, the ONLY nomination that Sam Jackson’s character was nominated was at the Tony’s. Sam Jackson didn’t receive ANY other critic group mentions when his costars did, the role he played was not nominated for any of the other productions throughout history. It was only the 2023 Tony’s that nominated him, which to me reads as they wanted to nominate a movie star (worth nothing tho that he was the only acting nomination for that play at the Tony’s that year, despite all of his costars getting more critics love). I think this says that it’s possible they reworked this production to make Sam Jackson more important of a role (which would carry over for the movie since it’s the same adaptation), however I think there’s a chance that someone like Ray Fisher could steal his thunder. I also think it would mean he can’t win if the role is not really all that meaty. But who knows, maybe it’ll be compelling to give the man his Oscar
