My 10 year old daughter was diagnosed in November 2022, inattentive type, there is a shortage of the meds that were prescribed by her psychiatrist in the area we live. She has all the markers, lost things, lost assignments, messiness at home in her desk, and backpack, unfinished tasks…impulsive, lost homework, forgetful. I recommend a regular exercise routine. For parents, I recommend patience, body doubling and consistent follow through with skill building. Interestingly, she will rearrange her room, including furniture from top to bottom about once a month. She is very creative, funny, she can see patterns in things that is fascinating. My baby always says, “I’m trying mom” and I know she is….she’s trying even harder to keep up. She is sensitive to rejection of others. She is in therapy every other week. I also have a 504 developed with school. Thank you for this wonderful video. Bless our beautiful children.

The schools don't care about the reason for the behaviors. They only see the behaviors as problematic, and it needs to be punished

So deep what you said....the schools think the behaviors need to be punished with medication I will add that to finish the sentence. My son's teacher is trying to push meds right now and I'm so against after speaking with you and this statement you made sealed the deal. I won't allow the schools to punish him. Man you just handed me a pearl. Thank you so much you helped me answer a question I struggled with and I was even if there is a diagnosis will you give medication....you helped me see the answer for me as a parent is no. God you saved me from wondering if I was doing the right thing for my son.

My son is 7-yrs old, and was recently diagnosed. After three yeats of constantly being in "trouble" for getting out of his seat, talking too much, answering questions with out being called on, etc., I requested an assessment for ADHD. Sincs then I've been researching and educating myself on the subject. I now see so many symptoms, because I now know what they are. My son's father doesn't believe he has ADHD. He thinks that I should discipline him more. My son has been labeled at his school, and is being picked on by some of the teachers. We recently had a meeting and implemented a 504 plan. I also started him on medication a week ago. This is so hard.

What is different about him while on medication? I have two relatives that took ritalin in the 90s and early 2000s. As children they were glassy eyes and seemed high. Since science has changed I was wondering do children still have those same symptoms

@@taneishiacrawford1464 It took us 3 different medications to find the right one. The first wss Adderall. The side affects were horrible and even scary. Hallucinations, crying, just out of it. The second medication was Adzenys. His behavior was good but his eye blinking (tic) was increased. The third medication, is a non stimulant, and it works sooo much better.

@@prayingandslayingmommy6473 wow ok thanks for letting me know I will look up those medications. My son is 11 and is being recommended for evaluation for ADHD. I told the teacher I am against meds and will do more activity at home more extra curricular and I totally cut out the video game. I asked for some time to see if there's changes improved his grades and distraction in class. Good luck to your son and you also. I am against meds but I won't close my mind to knowledge if it will help my son. Has his grades or behavior improved. From my experience it helps them sit still but I'm not sure if it makes them focus or do better work

Thank you so much! This video has been a tremendous support for my understanding of ADHD in Black children. My dissertation is on the disparities of ADHD amongst Black and White children regarding undiagnosed and under-treated.

From my experience with my son and his classmates, I've found that the white kids have been diagnosed much earlier. White parents seem to be much more open to medications, than black parents. Black children, in particular black boys get labeled as disruptive, or bad kids. There seems to be little, to no concern as to the "why". White children get the benefit of the doubt, and an exploration as to the "why". This has been going on for YEARS. How do we educate black parents on the symptoms of ADHD, and the treatments? It is so unfair to our children.

My son was just diagnosed in December. We are learning daily and I thank you for this video because I have no idea what I'm doing. But I agree that breaking down his tasks and chores into small simple tasks has been much more effective in getting them completed and remebering his routine.

This has helped me so much, being a mom of a black boy has been so intense. Having to accept that your baby needs a little more care, you go through blaming yourself, not knowing how to begin the mental health journey for your baby. The taboo of medication for your child, my biggest fear/issue was the School to Prison pipeline, my baby being judged, and this was addressed. I finally scheduled the appointment to get my baby the help he needs.

My book SEND in the Clowns documents my experiences as a black mother raising a son who remained undiagnosed ADHD until he was nine years and the multiple exclusions he faced and moving to different schools. The formative years are crucial for building self-esteem in our kids and those undiagnosed kids who are always in trouble or struggle to complete work, think the issue lies with them :( The good news is when you get the right support and treatment, ADHD can be a GIFT for your child, if they are encouraged to follow their talents. X

An actual brain disorder, a neurological disorder, and environmental factors really do have an influence on how it's triggered and carry out. When I got my late, diagnosis it confirmed my lifelong knowing but I was in denial of it for so long because of my 2E performance keeping me under the radar

Especially cuz no one knows what to look for in females with ADHD cuz we are often under the radar. Particularly, for young black girls with ADHD/ADD.

However, she has educated herself on the things I was complaining to her about. So she specifically enrolled in psychology classes to help me overcome it and apply what she learned with me at home
