I've recently been diagnosed with ADHD at 60 years old . I've had it all my life but when I was young no one knew about ADHD they just said I was shy. So I've had all these years to wrestle with procrastination and feeling crappy because I thought I was lazy and that frustrated me. Your video has shown me the 2 parts of me. If only I had known this so many years ago, my life would have been a little more easier, or at least I would have not blamed myself for not being like everyone else. After all these years of talking negatively to myself and berating myself, I've programmed my self to think the worst. I suppose I do feel better knowing that all these years I was doing the best I could. Thanks for the videos and the encouragement.

I too was diagnosed later in life (52) with ADHD. As a child I was always busy, but I never acted out. I liked classes, I liked reading. I practiced playing music. I built forts. In high school I was active in band, theater, boy scouts, etc. I found my own tools for dealing with ADHD without ever being diagnosed. Those tools stopped working in middle age, I started drinking (7 years sober now!), and became very depressed even after I stopped drinking. A finally found a psychiatrist who made the diagnosis, put me on some different meds for depression, and now things are better. But I still procrastinate. That's my next hurdle.

Procrastination for me is fear, over thinking, and making mountains out of molehills. The hardest things for me is getting started, managing interruptions, and getting work done that I consider a complete bore, like expense reports. So a good technique is something called the Pomodoro Technique - their are apps out there but basically - you set a 5 min timer and then just pick one thing on your to do list - and just one - then commit working on it for 5 minutes. . For me I love it because I don’t have to think about the entire project, I just need to think about the first 5 minutes, and mist if the time when 5 min is up I just keep on going and it brings my stress levels way down and I feel happy about my accomplishments. Look it up and tread about it
@Aaronmcdcs
@Aaronmcdcs 4 года назад
Me to, all the meds and therapy seem to work except for simply motivativating myself. Now, when I had a job at a college tutoring it was easy to work because I loved it and was often asked for by name to tutor students. I have a bookcase of textbooks, novels, and nonfiction books that look super cool and I want to study the hell out of...but I just cant sit down and start...

Change the speed to 1.5 or 1.75 in the settings if you want to try to listen. He talks about short term reward and long term reward. The procrastination gives you short term reward and are easier to get, and for us with ADHD/ADD have it hard to stay focus long enough to the long term reward so we go to the short term reward instead. The advice he gives is to talk to our inner ''procrastinator'' and tell them how much happy/how much reward the long term goal gives instead of the short term one when we procrastinate.

The video suggests we have a motivated side and an instant gratification side, and we give in to the latter when we procrastinate. I don't think that's a fair way to put it. I don't give in to that side at all, but when I try to motivate and activate myself my mind will simply not shift into that gear, no matter how I approach it. It's suddenly ten times more draining to simply walk to my desk for instance, even strictly in a physical sense. When this offers so much resistance, I either push through it, overstep my boundaries, still get nothing done and end up exhausted, or I procrastinate to find different ways or different times that might work better, but usually they still don't. There is no giving in to any tempting but easier route involved whatsoever, but unfortunately this misconception is spread even through channels about ADHD.

This doesn’t fit ADHD dislexic . For me ,I have thing’s I want to do and I have things I need to do and none of it gets done . I feel stuck ,like a kind of mental paralysis that affects my physical body -bcan’t move ( standing there spinning my wheels) I tell my self to pick one task ….how hard can it be.. I look around …I’ll decide ok I’ll put a new tyre on the wheel barrow …I go to get the tools to do the job next thing I know is I’m climbing inside the roof to fix an air conditioning vent - to some people this might seem funny - but when you see it happening as it’s happening it sucks the life force out of you . On rare days for an hour or two something strange happens and stuff just works and I see myself getting shit done - I think to myself .. Holly crap this is how normal people must feel - why can’t I feel this way all the time . I just don’t understand what the hell is going on. From childhood until today it’s been the same thing 50+ years . I think outside the box sometimes I fix things in ways people haven’t thought of . I know I’m intelligent - in survival situations I can survive- spur of the moment solutions . But day to day life is such a struggle. Like walking in quicksand. Im self reflective-self aware empathetic …. Oh yippee… for the people around me - I’ve been told form out of the blue ….you are different- your such a nice guy - Blah blah blah . I understand that - I accept that I know it’s true - how the hell does that help me - zero. I have learned to accept praise- but I still don’t like hearing it . I’m happy with a simple thanks for that . And away I go . I’m not suicidal- but when my time is up on this earth I will be happy to go. I also dislike feeling that way . I want to be able to feel happy about living life .it’s just not there . I just don’t know what to do or how to fix it . Nothing has worked yet.

Thanks. Yes I suffer with depression too as well as having diagnosed adhd. Inattentive which I think is worse when being an adult and the pressures and obligations that come with it. It can be a vicious circle sometimes riding a wave and managing adhd well. Other times a prisoner in my own house. Unable to open the front door. Also being self employed is a real recipe for disaster but I am determined to succeed where I have failed in the past I just have to make the right changes and stick to a routine that works. Its when something happens and I fall out of routine that the stress and muddled thinking comes then depression. Only this week did I manage to drag myself back after a month of bad times. So feeling brighter at the moment and hoping to go on a continual run. That comment of mine was when I was in that period. Thanks for the link.

I’m glad you’re better Jake. Come back to the slef worth video and do that exercise every day for a week and you will better the chances of a prolonged good period. Do it also where you collect memories of situations where you previously have avoided going into depression or where you have pulled yourself out. Do those while you are good then chances are better for staying good. 😃👍🏻

This is similar to my own view of what’s going on, I always tell people about how I have ‘two selves’ - ones like, an adult toddler or a kid, and the other is the ‘mother’ or ‘manager’ self that’s running around after the other one trying to get them to do something, keep them on task, and the one that chides and is ashamed of the child side. Before, I didn’t used to think of the manager side as a mother type figure, but after trying to be more easy and loving to myself (I learned in therapy that I was really negative and harsh on myself) it sort of has changed the relationship to one where I do try and understand myself and I do need to give myself the love and compassion of a mom, in order to get cooperation. I’m still struggling to find good ways to not procrastinate it’s still a fight!

So self talk to your inner procrastinating side of you. Be intentional in realizing that it’s a fight between you on the inside. The motivated side of you and the procrastinating side of you. Think logically about a task that needs to be done. (Even as simple as taking a shower) fall in love with taking a shower just as you fell in love with being stuck in the bed. Find let some change in the mind and don’t be afraid to play around with your comforts 💚

What to do when the tasks take me hours on end and I either have to stop until another day and also leave other things undone. For example, it takes long to write articles, make the grammar structure right, shoot the video, edit it and bc I'm doing all that I don't clean my house. If I clean my house I don't work bc of the same thing, cleaning takes me very long bc I haven't learned how to get organized and declutter. Not having enough storage space, not knowing how to classify things, etc.
@annak29

This is excellent. Working on intrinsic motivation and deeper objects of reward - internal emotional and rational qualities (not material) are the key. Also, ppl have told me they don't have an "internal voice". This has to do with the non-visual working memory deficit, which should develop by age 5, but is lacking due to ADHD brain structure.

The mistakes and failure make the negative voices come to the front of my mind and louder. Now that i look at it the negative is there when i procrastinate too. Its as loud as the mistake voice. I realize im in constant negative voices no matter what i do or dont do. If this makes any sense?

I must say the advice seems simple and almost not helpful but if you actually try and call upon there other part of you and address both sides of you like he said...it doesn't create a shit. I'm sure over time the more you practice that simple exercise the more benefits you reap.

This Dutch docter found out with a research team that ADHD is caused by eating or drinking the wrong food. Some people get hyper from milk products, others don't. Leaving the wrong food out of your diet causes you to become much calmer for yourself and your environment.

True for some. Let food be thy medicine. Hippocrates I believe.

That's a lot of rambling for somebody who clearly doesn't have a clue as to what they are talking about. I think the ADHD community has discovered it's very own 'David Brent' from The Office (UK Version. Think well meaning, clueless)
