How is it late onset just because you’ve hid it your whole life??? The ability to diagnose does not change that you were born a certain way. Just asking as a 52 year old who just figured out I’m AuDHD.

Hi @towzone, You raise a great point. It's not actually 'late onset' in the true sense. Often, individuals have had these neurodiverse traits since birth but have developed coping mechanisms or strategies to mask them. Your recent self-discovery at 52 is a testament to how these traits can remain unrecognized for years. It highlights the need for more awareness and understanding of neurodiversity across all ages. Congrats on your self-discovery journey!

I'm pretty sure I have ADHD, but the problem is after being diagnosed with Autism last year (at age 31), every health professional I have raised the topic and described my struggles to chalks them up to being symptoms of Autism... I know there is overlap, but there are too many discrepancies for it to just be this >< I was warned by a GP that diagnoses often stops people from learning about themselves and their neurotype, when in reality it seems to be everyone else around me who has stopped questioning it or taking me seriously! They seem very willing to put me in a box and wash their hands of me now that I have a diagnosis. I'm glad to have one, but its opened up new issues too

It's disheartening to hear about your struggles with getting your concerns about ADHD taken seriously, especially after receiving an Autism diagnosis. It's important for health professionals to recognize the complexity of neurodiversity and the potential for coexisting conditions. Your experience highlights the need for thorough and individualised assessments that consider all aspects of your unique neurotype. It's understandable that having a diagnosis can sometimes lead to oversimplification or dismissal of other concerns. Remember that your experiences and challenges are valid, and seeking support from professionals who truly listen and understand is crucial. Keep advocating for yourself and seeking the help you need to navigate these complexities. You're not alone in this journey.
