adhdinadults.com Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms include impulsivity, hyperactivity, inattention and anger problems in adults. Primary Care Provider (PCP) Brendan Montano, M.D. describes common signs of Adult ADHD in patients by presenting three common scenarios that often lead to diagnosis, including: self-referred patients, patients that present their life in chaos and/or those experiencing comorbidities (anxiety disorders, depression and substance abuse) as they may be masking and emerging from ADHD.
ADHD symptoms are often realized in adults after being identified in a child. Such was the case for Eva O'Malley, the founder of Monmouth Ocean CHADD, who became aware of her own ADHD after her son was diagnosed. Eva speaks about indicators such as problems with her memory, her inability to retain information from verbal sources and her history of interrupting others.
Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder may also impact performance at work and strain personal relationships. Marriage problems and job loss are not uncommon for adults with untreated ADHD. Doctor Montano encourages primary care providers to dig deeper when a patient presents their life as hectic or chaotic as these issues may be derived from behaviors associated with attention deficit disorder. Please visit the link above to learn more about recognizing and treating adult attention deficit disorder.

My teachers at school thought I was just a problem child, but my art and tech drawing teachers loved me. I was an angel in their eyes. Kicked out of maths class for being disruptive and being handed merit awards at the end of art class. School was a frustrating place. I spent lots of time in the principal's office and the counsellors office. I was not a problem child.. I was a child with problems.

same here. I did a drawing, of some lines, for a process technician class. I took multiple classes, but I was put in the classes out of order by the counselor. there were 7, or 8 classes, in total, but the counselor placed me in the 1st, 4th, 5th and 7th classes. I past the 1st one, w out even ever really tryin. the 4th class is the 1 I did the drawing for. I did that shit 7 t i m e s . . . cause of my perfectionism. I went in 20-30 minutes early, to class, the day the drawing was due. I was really unsure of myself, but I knew that my drawing looked good and that I did my best. I asked my teacher if he could grade mine before anyone got to class and class started. I didn’t want to be devastated and embarrased, at the same time, in front of my class mates. he agreed to grade mine right then and there. w in 2-3 seconds the red pen came out... by the time it was all said and done... I had made a 38. I was crushed. my teacher saw it all over my face and told me, as sorta a consolation prize, that my drawing was the nicest, cleanest, neatest drawing he had ever had anybody ever hand in. my teacher also tried to help me figure out were the disconnect was and a few possible solutions to try. it just really sucks to try your best at something, anything, only to find out that your best is nowhere near close to bein even remotely good enough.

same for me. english, history, and science were amazing for me since i wasnt focused on one specific thing for to long and i was able to picture certain situations and things like that in my mind and use my imagination so it was easier to learn. when to chemistry, math or really anything with equations however, it was so hard for me to learn because of how i had to stare at one thing for too long. it was so easy to just start tracing the shapes in geometry or instead of saying a + b = c i'd think d + z = f and completely distract myself from the task at hand. forgetting things was also a huge problem. I was the kinda kid that would say "i forgot to do my homework" when i literally forgot to do my homework but to teachers it just seemed like I was a problematic child. being home schooled definitely helped. im a great student with straight A's but only because i am able to do work whenever I feel most relaxed and ready instead of doing it because i have no other options. i also have my parents there who understand what im feeling and can get me to continue working. i would recommend home schooling for anyone who is really struggling so that they can get used to making school work and other responsibilities a habit that are easy to remember. :)

Advise from someone who's got ADHD: Don't ever put loud background music in a video where people are talking! Applying for jobs on line is a nightmare, with ADHD - setting up agency memberships, passwords, government ID information - gets confusing as you're in and out of different windows, forget what you've just done, enter the wrong passwords, then do something even more infuriating like loosing your driving licence..😡 ! Even though I file everything, I struggle because of my memory or not understanding parts of the form. I find it stressful - the refinement and confinement of it.

I can learn technology in the work place - just a frustrating struggle in the initial uptake stage and grasp of the language - after that I seem to become very fast paced at the job. I've done a few order picking jobs recently - the frustrating part is confusing an aisle number such as C14 8D with C15 8B or 8E - that happens quite frequently on 'bad' days and it's really annoying. Like looking at a B and memorising it as a D 😡 starts to really piss you off if you start doing it too often - gets the BP up. It's a case of thinking very slow and deliberate, but on other days it'd just flow fast and quick - blunder free with little thought behind it - in the flow as it were.

Applying for jobs in any fashion as a Neurodiverse individual is a nightmare as a female with Aspergers, ADHD Inattentive, Anxiety and Depression Born in the early eighties I could tell you stories that would make your head explode about the discrimination faced by someone undiagnosed until late in life

Concerta medication's really helped with me though. I've also found that during lockdown, a reduction of stress by quiting my airport job and going part time, with a new order picking job, speed work with a boxer ball & speedball, learning to draw with new cad packages or even just 'Word' and the part time order picking job I do really helps, because it involves thinking coordination, matching figures with your screen gun device, hitting a sequence of keys in a paced order and learning how to relax more while keeping the mind working at the same time. I had so many struggles and made so many frustrating mistakes when I started, it was unbelievable. I just kept fucking up. The medication helped and I've dropped its dosage right down, but I also found that exercising the brain with areas that were miscoordinated or weak, really helped. I think there's some plasticity and it can be improved, but you have to go through a frustration barrier . I wouldn't ever fancy working in a busy fast food place though, remembering lots of fast orders and changes - that's where I'd draw the line - f@#k that! Tiredness//fatigue is another contributor - particularly if you train. I make sure to mini nap & rehydrate and take electrolytes to replenish. Hidden fatigue can be a big contributor to brain fog, I think.

For the past 8 years I've been fumbling through school (still have less than 2 years in credit) and hardly able to hold a job, except one I miraculously kept for a year. At first it was believed to be depression, until I realized that the symptoms I was suffering were all anxiety induced, and i was getting frequent panic attacks because of school, work, struggling social life. Looking into ADHD it makes a lot of sense. As a kid I was bad about homework or really finishing much of anything, but I had two very academically driven parents and a lot of smart friends to push me. Once left to my own devices it seemed I could just never finish anything and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why.

These were my symptoms my entire life. I sought alcohol for a cure, or self-medicated, I left my two sons to be raised by their Father, Thank-God, in the long run, it was the best thing I could have done for them. I am 55. I was not diagnosed until I was 54. Started on medication, and I am an entirely different person. I would hope that NIMH begins putting brochures out there, about ADHD in adults. I know I've had it since I was a child. They (common public), put such stigmas on these things. Personally, since being on the medication, I don't give a crap about what too many people think, except those I love. It's so good to keep yourself informed. I don't feel like "She has mental issues"' and that people are talking behind my back. The only people I care about today are the ones that care back. I wasted so much of my life on making other people happy. It's my turn. And it's NEVER too late.

I was diagnosed with adhd as an adult and I see why I have a hard time focusing on things, I don't have good relationships when it comes to dating., I'm very emotional. I was in foster care as a child my mom was on drugs and I had problems as a child with learning. I was in special ed and never got the proper service I needed while I was in foster care. When I turned 25 I decided I want to become a foster parent and it's been 7 yrs since I was a foster parent and I love helping others. At first I didn't think I could be a foster parent because of my disability well I was wrong. Today I decided I want to create a group for adults dealing with adhd if your interested comment and I will make a group on Facebook.

It's still helping people. Over here crying because I was diagnosed with ADHD as a child and took 54MG concerta from elementry on to highschool. After the passing of my step dad I stopped taking them and thought I grew out of it and took all the stuff that was happening as just me grieving. When at work I get unbelievably anxious and I have to leave the job. I have a horrible work history because of this. I'm just terrified to go to a doctor and ask about it. I don't want them to think I'm a drug addict. I fear what other people think to a massive extent. This has brought chronic depression and suicidal tendencies. I'm trying to muster up the courage to finally ask my doctor.

It’s not the difference in cognition that poses the problem.. it’s the social settings and standards that most of us fail at or at some point give up on because we aren’t wired the same as the majority. It has posed problems all my life. not because I’m different but because the majority of people push different away, some without even realizing they’re doing it. We’re not designed for a pampered world that gets to make silly rules and holidays and jobs with skinny time frames. And we’re certainly not fit for the small talk “let’s talk about stuff unimportant and fake”.... or talking to someone else for the purpose of it benefiting them one day even though they may dislike that person. And speaking for myself, I love the adrenaline of confrontation for a just and righteous cause and I’ve never turned down a fight because of size or even knowledge that the person may be a king fu god. Even the times I was pretty sure I had no chance but I won’t tolerate being witness to someone else’s demise that can’t or aren’t used to defending themselves. I don’t get the social cues I’ve got other stuff to do that I’d like to focus my attention on than those things.. however, that hasn’t made me the most popular person but I can honestly say that I am far nicer than anyone I know and when I am friends with someone or grow a bond feeling to someone, it’s there forever no matter what and I do t have a friend today that I haven’t been in some kind of huge altercation with in the midst of growing a friendship. I could go on and on and on.. but I’m not.

Question/ comment ... Maybe this isnt a "disease" or a sickness or something that needs to be cured . Maybe its a matter of us really looking deep & utilizing our personalities as individuals for the greater good. ..a greater purpose... ...because it sounds to me like we do too much trying to fit in. ...and using socity & the world in general as a model to judge ourselves by is very dangerous. I'm just thinking.. That's all.

Much of this video seemed to describe me to the T. I will be getting evaluated for ADHD this week and this video has really helped me and made me feel not so stupid. I have been struggling with these symptoms since March of this year and have lost a job because of it. I continue to struggle with my new job and wrapping my mind around the tasks at hand.

I was diagnosed with A.D.D. as a kid.. stopped with meds because they all gave horrible side effects. Been atleast 15 years now since treated. Honestly never knew really what A.D.D. was until more recently. When I did an assignment about A.D.H.D. I was actually taken back. The feeling of being stuck in quick sand is best way I can describe how life's been going. It's like the more I do the FASTER I sink but the fear of sitting still and sinking always takes over.

Hmm, sadly not true for a lot of ADHD adults. Large numbers of kids with ADHD still have it as adults, though it might look a bit different. It says in this video about sometimes a lot of crisis and chaos in ADHD adult lives, about lost jobs and failed marriages. Good treatment and self-management is always important.

From what I've noticed with my own scatteredness.. Is that it starts to heal when I get connected to my feelings. But I don't know how to explain it beyond that. Like getting in touch with feelings becomes painful so I go back to being scattered afterwards. But overall its reducing my quality of life to be scattered. At the same time I can't stand not to be engaged with lots of different ideas. Like it starts to feel boring or anxiety starts creeping up. Abandonment trauma seems to be my biggest issue though.

Could it just be my depression? When i was a kid, i'm not much of a problem child. Sure i do tend to talk to a friend beside but it's pretty controllable. I didnt have some telltale signs like an urge to move about. When i grew older, i gave up in life and just followed my vices, namely stimulis like porn, gaming and drinking. Now i have trouble concentrating like watching a movie, i'd skip it and i cant sit comfortably. My memory is shit and im a general mess. Now sitting down doing nothing and trying to change my life has been really hard. Like im in that constant state of finding something entertaining before one thing ends.

I have trouble focusing on school since early childhood, was bad at maths but good in French, literature, history and English, I learned to write and read at the mere age of 2, have a 132 IQ, and I've been described by most of the people who know or knew me as a freewheeling guy with limitless imagination and an acute intelligence and wit beyond my years but on the other hand, a brazen, impulsive, brash, easily bored, hypersensitive, overly emotional, thin-skinned and restless boy. I speak very fast and I often lose track of my words, forgetting things, names, I show up late mostly and I am still UNABLE to do multiple tasks at once. I've been in therapy but I never ever took any Ritalin. Should I ? Because my ADHD didn't prevent me to go to college and to have success on the fields I'm good at. I know that being hyperactive is difficult at times but I love that part of me, I love being a free wheel and I'm pretty cautious about Ritalin but I know that, as I'm about to graduate and to work in an office, it might become a problem, so what are the non-medical options to deal with ADHD ?

Sorry, but missed “ to do “ list hardly scratch the surface for relationship problems. Anger, impatience, not listening, different “realities”....these are far more powerfully corrosive of relationships. ADHD anger alone precludes friendships for a lifetime, but is not incorporated into the common understanding of ADHD OR even the DSM.
