The fact that it took me to close my eyes to understand this video.....and I did it, yay! 1. People with ADHD have a limited reservoir of executive function (effort pool) 2. Keeping your blood sugar levels high helps fuel it, keep sipping on lemonade 3. Visualize the goal, helps with visualizing habits you want to build 4. Surround yourself with a lot of rewards, the thought of them will motivate you 5. Physical exercise 6. Motivational pep talk 7. Habit and routine is super helpful (use less executive function) 8. Over practice things that are new to you (transfer from effort brain to automatic brain) 9. Practice those routines visually helps 10. Harder for people with ADHD to create habits, overlearning helps

Yes I need routine! It's almost a hyper focus on routine! The trouble is because I think in black and white when that routine gets disrupted in the tiniest way really upsets me and I just shut down! Still working with my ADHD!

Coaching a woman whose experience was smilair. as she described it... she thought of routine as a kind of virtual memory. when here routine was disrupted she got overwhelmed cause as she described it... i would lose parts of my memory and still have to function. when here routines were in place she was high functioning. Evelyn, hang in there and keep the faith!

AttentionTalkVideo thanks for responding. People often wonder why I carry my planner more than my phone.....it's my life. It's what keeps me on track and it's difficult to explain that to people when all they scream is "Be flexible!" I'm in nursing school on top of being a mom of two high schoolers, a middle schooler and the baby about to enter nursing school. Then throw work, a co parenting schedule, kids schedule, relationship schedule and me time it's a must

Evelyn, you comments are motivating. As a coach i rarely and i mean rarely hare things i have a strong opinion on but in this situation i can't help myself. I formulated a quote a few years ago (which i'm a bit proud of)... which is... it is convenient for society for you to do it their way. As an attention coach when i hear "be flexible" i hear... do it the way i want you to cause it is easier on me. it might sound like i'm being critical with that statement. I'm really note. we all do it (myself included) as a matter of habit (which i catch myself doing i try to self regulate). My point in sharing it with you is to give you strength... don't be bullied. if it works for you... it works for you. Advocate for yourself... thank you for share your comment and your personal story. I pray others read what you wrote and find inspiration!

TLDR version: fellow ADHDers, do NOT underestimate the meaning of routines and the importance of managing your use of willpower. Ignoring this is like a professional runner ignoring to preserve his stamina and will cause you to undermine your own efforts. A few years ago I got depressed (before I was diagnosed) and now after diagnosis and starting medication, I started to notice subtle, but significant changes on how I tackle daily challenges. One was that how much more effort things took, even with medication (concerta) vs just coffee (which isn't that great a stimulant for me). Then one day it hit me: I had to use massive amounts of mental resources to plan and execute things that I used to do by routine and expend little to no effort to (especially morning routines). Medication can't do routines and planning for you, it can only help you do them yourself. Fast forward to today: I have my ups and downs, but little by little, I'm starting to master executive things and reaching towards my potential. A few years ago, I dropped out of University, MBA program, but am now on a fast track to med school and have high confidence I can gracefully get in and out of medschool. You can succeed, but first you must enable that option by getting the foundations right. Medication and IQ will not get you there alone. These things I have learned the hard way over the last decade.

I love how Dr. Barkley frames the brain. think of it as a two level system. the automatic brain. and the EF brain. the EF is very effortful as it must override the automatic brain. That said the more routine the less EF brain you need to preform daily tasks. That said, it is very effortful for the EF brain to PAUSE to make routine automatic. Clearly you have done this and are thriving. thanks for your post!

Ok... I think I'm getting this. When I was a kid, I abhorred routines and structure. The more structure there was, the more confined and, really, /claustrophobic/ I felt. From some of the other comments, it sounds like I'm not alone in this. I'm wondering if a part of that might be at least in part of how much effort it takes to set them in place like you said. Plus there's the constant lure of the seductress called "Impulsivity" (and depressive episodes in my case). The other thing is I tend to have a "go big or go home" attitude. I tend to either want to do all the things in one fell swoop of awesomeness, or there's no point in doing anything (except for binge-watching that TV show on Netflix). 5 minutes of cleaning? Pshhhh 5 HOURS or nuthin' baby! But that doesn't /really/ work for a lot of things (like maintaining a clean house) because then I'm bored/tired/whatever. But you're definitely right that it takes less effort to go through a learned system. Since I started putting in systems that were really small and short, tacking them onto other things that I do already (like do the dishes and then have breakfast, go to the bathroom and then do 5 pushups or 2 pullups etc) I've actually been able to get things done. Well, it's a start anyways. The hardest part for me is to keep doing these consistently PLUS not get carried away and burn up all my energy by trying to do it all at once.
@AttentionTalkVideo
@AttentionTalkVideo 7 лет назад

I have struggled with this as I usually see phrases like "I can do it!" and such as empty catchphrases or placebo statements. But I can confirm that visualisation helps. Imagining the moment when I get to present a project to someone often helps me to complete said project. I've gotta learn to get over my pessimism and give the pep talk thing a fairer try. My current plan is to use handwritten diagrams to abstractly plan out activities and possibly to modify them as I go - such as breaking down a task into tiny steps and colouring in a circle after each step. Should help me with representing my executive desires in the real, physical world in theory.
@stahpitt8531

My question is, how do you maintain habits and routine without letting everything else in life fall to pieces. I feel like if it were as simple as just doing it over and over again everyday I would figure it out myself at some point. It took me a couple years of focusing only on personal hygiene to brush my teeth daily and shower daily, and i don't even do those things on the weekend! They're fueled by me not wanting to offend people with my odor, not because I do them every day.
@AttentionTalkVideo
@AttentionTalkVideo 5 лет назад
That's the trick isn't it. Your question is simple. but i'm afraid i don't have a simple answer. In simple terms one needs to identify the few important things and make sure they are address to keep life simple and build from there. For many with ADHD simple is good. My father taught me... the more things you own the things you have that are broken. The more moving parts the more broken they become. Keep It Simple (KISS)

What if you focus on just one significant habit at a time? Go all in on that habit. Might take you 2-6+ months, depending on how hard it can be. But then after that, you can build another habit. Example, maybe going to bed at the same time every night might take you a year to do, but at least that habit has some legs. 1 positive habit at a time.

Dr. Barkley has made an good argument that ADHD is a executive functioning impairment... largely one of Self Regulation which we covered in this video. Self regulation is having the awareness and the ability to direct an action back on yourself to change your behavior to change the future... it is a future directed act.
@sl4983
@sl4983 5 лет назад
I got that wow moment too Jeff! That it's harder for those with ADHD to get a habit, and they have to practice it more and "overlearn" it. Also, just rehearsing the visual of it in your mind like Dr. Barkley said.
@AttentionTalkVideo
@AttentionTalkVideo 5 лет назад
exactly. using Dr. Barkley's concepts. The executive functioning brain has to effortly step in and override the automatic brain constantly to program a new habit. While long term habits are very helpful that are far more difficult for those with ADHD to establish. He has also said that in general self help is more difficult for those with ADHD. thanks for you post.

Neat stuff. What I picked up first run through is that I should utilize routines and habits in order to save fuel for the executive function tasks as they occur. A matter of efficiency in brain/energy use. This is a big step for my rebellious nature which used to reject all routine as boring ruts to be AVOIDED. Now, being somewhat older and wiser, I've learned to accept some routines and habits as more efficient ways to get things done, and to improve on my personal performance. And since seeing this video I understand that I am on a proper tack, now to devote some attention to proper routines and efficiencies to be gained there. Saving up brainpower for the problem-solving and creativity and pursuits that I so enjoy. wp

+Wade Patton EXACTLY! I've got an attention exercise that could really drive this home. Spend a designated amount of time to use your less dominate hand. Most find the exercise to be VERY effortful to be successful... so effortful they forget things cause they have to concentrante so hard to keep the exercise top of mind! For the same reason (I believe... and Dr. Ramsay at U Penn... we are writing a paper together on this) that it is more difficult for those with ADHD to establish habits... cause it takes lots of EF for a longer period of time to make what was effortful automatic.

Great video! So we tax the 'effort resource pool' in the short-term to create a habit, which once created, conserves our effort resources in the long run. I wish I'd understood this trade-off years ago. It takes a ridiculous amount of up-front effort to create organizational systems for myself, but once they're in place I can put more things on automatic. Also, regarding the need for blood sugar in the frontal lobe... This is something we with ADHD need to be aware of. I was taking a supplement that worked very well to reduce joint pain, only it lowered my already low overall blood sugar causing lightheadedness and blurred vision. My medical providers did not put the pieces together because "low blood sugar" is not a negative side effect for most people.
@AttentionTalkVideo
@AttentionTalkVideo 6 лет назад
Wow! You did a great job of articulating this. YES! Creating habits is more effortful for those with ADHD because it taxes working memory... one must PAUSE and override the automatic action and implement the new action over and over again until you reprogram the new habit. To do this you need to self regulate and use your working memory at the point of performance.... which are at its core the two main challenges of ADHD. I'm grateful for your post

Aargh. Routines. What are these routines you speak of? I never met a routine I was able to implement. All four of us have adhd, and 2 of us might have high functioning autism. Sometimes I feel like the captain of a sinking ship, and I find it totally hard to have fun with my family because I am always so worried about not getting anything done. I feel like most days all we do is argue, because NONE of us can stick to routines, stuff is forgotten, my husband over schedules activities and as a result we are constantly late, and leave messes all over the house. Which I clean up. Slowly and badly.
@JeffCopper
@JeffCopper 8 лет назад
+michelle tulumello you'll almost certainly disagree with me BUT... in all my years of coaching i find most have routines... they don't look like what the person wants them to look like so they can't recognize them but they are there. to find them one must pause and look for them. Once you observe them they are obvious. Consider this. A carnivor doesn't know or think of itself as a carnivor. to discover it observations are need and patterns recognized... hmm i seem to chace after things that move... what would that be... a carnivor? self obervation isn't easy because we are not taught how to do it. find something you get done. and reflect on how you got it done. repeat over and over and after a while you might find a pattern emerges

Is there a table that shows the effective time where these techniques can be done? For example: sugary drinks/food are done _during_ the task. Mental motivation/pep talk is done a little _before_ the task, and exercise is passive; just done when it can be done.
@AttentionTalkVideo
@AttentionTalkVideo 3 года назад
I'm pretty sure there isn't a table. This is where self observation is IMPORTANT. Not everyone is the same. It is helpful to learn things in general but then one must realize they don't fit the norm. Let me give you a personal example. From 1980 to 1995 every time the Dr. got the results of my EKG they called and demanded i get to a hospital immediately. It happened in 1998 real time. My new Dr. wanted to give me an EKG test in his office real time. I told him about my past and that he would want me to go the hospital after they test and that in the past it was useless. He did the test. Got the results. Walked in to the room with his keys saying get my things he was taking me to the hospital. He didn't take me but allowed me to drive myself. After three hours and some tests the cardiologist came to talk to me. I asked why did i always have to go to the hospital after an EKG. He said, it is because when you read my EKG it looks like I'm having a heart attack. The reality is that my abnormal EKG is my normal. To this day i have a picture of my EKG's in my phone to show Doctors my normal. Same concept applies to ADHD. We are all different. My advise is learn to listen to you body and what works for you. Thanks for posting

A good rule of thumb to follow is that if it is sold at GNC or the pill section of the health food store, someone is trying to cheat you out of your money (and those supplements often don't contain the ingredients stated on the label). If you think you need more of something, the only way to get it is from eating foods that contain it. Your body can't process vitamins or anything else if it's given all by itself.

Just an observation: I noticed that you speak at a slow, normal pace in your solo radio shows but end up talking too fast when communicating with Dr. Barkley. There were times when I felt he stopped talking because he could already see you planned to say something. While he tends to talk a bit slowly and methodically. Tend to make similar mistakes myself...so absolutely no judgment here. I love his talks on ADHD strategies that can help. Sometimes I wish Dr. Barkley had actually worked one-on-one with ADHD people to see in actual practice how things help and how things don't. So that a lot of these textbook strategies can become actionable strategies. Maybe in your future talks, you can ask him questions, that make him go in more depth on 1-2 strategies, e.g. what if you tried over learning but find that person with ADHD gets frustrated quickly at how long the process can take. For example, James Clear in his Atomic Habits talks about 2-min starts and organizing the task to get an immediate sense of Win. Maybe that can help Dr Barkley to adopt more flexible strategies to get promising results. Just my 2 c.

The body is an infinitely complex. Much of what we do on this channel is to share models or what i call lens for people to look through in order to make sense of things so they can activate. So yes everything plays into it. To what degree different things play depends on the person. In the end the model/lens can help you understand things to gain clarity to activate.

I cut out yeast wheat and sugar completely out of my diet for 6 weeks. I had horrendous cravings for two weeks but after the 6 weeks was up I could literally smell sugar in my food and it would nauseate me. Among lots of other health benefits I found my appetite returned with a vengeance. Because I was only eating healthy food AND my energy levels were the best they ever were I actually lost a ton of weight. I ate when I was hungry. Had a massive breakfast (fruit salad and yogurt, a fry, porridge), starter, main course and sometimes desert for dinner., maybe a small snack in the evening. It’s the least impaired I have ever been. It’s only recently I have started to see a connection with regulating my blood sugars and my ADHD (not a diabetic but definitely have issues with sugar regulation). In short what I am saying is there are better ways of maintaining your blood sugar than what Dr. Barkley has suggested here. He’s not a dietician and that’s not his area of expertise. The point he is making is that sugar regulation is key to managing your ADHD and optimising your functionality. As a diabetic it is critical for your health and well-being that you monitor and regulate your sugar to maintain optimum levels so I would say in your case you just keep doing what you are doing.

This is rubbish. And I contacted Barkley and he admitted he’s not recommending this anymore as it was extrapolation from another study. Sugar is bad for humans because it’s half fructose and fructose is only metabolised by the liver leading over the long term to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and a host of other issues. It’s also false that the brain only runs on glucose. The brain runs better on ketones. So Keto way of eating or long intermittent fasting fasting is best for brain function. The worst for brain function is regular constant eating of carbs.

So theoretically if a person has insulin resistance and experiencing severe executive dysfunction and decides to reverse it by eating a low glycemic diet with fasting they then might be able to improve on executive dysfunction? Thanks for the video. It was definitely informing. Just one small thing though and that is ... Dr Barkley you mentioned the benefits of small amounts of sugar in the blood system for people that may have external factors stressing their executive system because this is actually beneficial for the brain etc. You went on to mention the benefits of sipping sugar containing drinks, and you provided examples like lemonade or sports drinks etc. I am disappointed to hear you choose these unhealthy drinks instead of suggesting healthier options like natural fruit juice. We are in the day and age where these very drinks are responsible for a host of other health related problems such as diabetes. 'Small sip' do not exist. Over a long period of time? A sports drink or bottle of lemonade come a 300ml size or in a 1.5l bottle and the reality is ... the whole bottle will get consumed over a short period. Other than that, I enjoy your lectures very much and many thanks for sharing your world of knowledge with us :-)
