Students with attention deficit disorder (ADHD) may struggle with working memory. As a result, late-night cram sessions may leave ADD students blank once test time arrives with all of its anxiety. Here, Dr. Ari Tuckman offers advice for retaining more of what you study, and remaining calm when test time arrives.

That's great, but rehearsing for a test isn't improving working memory. Working memory is short term holding and manipulation of info. Mental math, verbal word problems, the switching and resuming tasks, or learning new skills. You can memorize all the presidents for a test, but that won't make you any better at taking an order and remembering the extra lettuce, mayo on the side, and while you're walking back your co-worker says they need bread and water for table 3 and you lose it all.

It may not improve working memory overall but it can help with remembering that particular information.

I tried overstudying, but still mess up in tests! Anyone who has useful suggestions for providing names and communicating well in a test please let me know. I tend to somehow say something that I know is wrong instead.

Explain it to your friends or anyone who is willing to listen. You'll remember it better.

How in the world is studying more supposed to help. You have get a few days to study for case study or an exam, and not to mention we have limited working memory. Studying more won't help with any of that. I can't tell you how many times my dipshit parents told me that garbage, only for it do nothing at all.

I guess he meant not to just study the night before. Study more by studying in advanced. You don’t truly understand something if you just memorize something the night before. I’ve experienced this firsthand. There’s also strategies like active recall to test yourself. Use Anki flash cards for another method called spaced repetition. These strategies are pretty intuitive but that doesn’t mean anything if you don’t strategically implement them. If you think you have a learning disability like adhd or short term memory and you haven’t implemented these strategies you may just be bad at studying and are looking for a way to be like this superstar students that just pick up concepts as soon as they hear them.

@@mauriciogonzalez6302 you’re so right. For me with adhd I realised that starting as early as possible and also - reading notes the same day I’ve written them from class or at least by watching multiple videos about it , makes me remember things more and also makes me have an ”aha” moment - meaning things click and the fire I remember them more if that makes sense.

I can study a week before a test and still not have the information. I study a lot i have too. But nothing is retaining. It's frustrating to have to try and relearn everything before the final exam. Studying more and at a longer time before the test doesn't help. Nothing is retaining. I can remember the certain topics and the stuff that we used over and over but it's like breathing you're not thinking. But when it gets to the continuation classes or even applying it to real life things it gets hard because these isn't something in my bain that says hey you learned something similar remember this.

If it's an important test that I need to take without actually learning it, I just revise it and learn it a few hours or a break before the test. I do this with geography a lot (which isn't good since I learn nothing), but I do really want to change this silly method.
