Brilliant video Howard, thank you. Looking forward to the next 2! A question on this one - on the competency regarding adapting the lesson plan - if the pupil makes a mistake, how do you decide whether the mistake is worth adapting the lesson for? In your example a mistake was made on roundabouts on the way to learning a parking manoeuvre. So the pupil needs to improve on roundabouts, but also needs to learn the manoeuvre. They have demonstrated a need but they also have the need that the lesson was originally planned to cover, so how do we prioritise which need to work on? They need to cover both things at some point. Are you adapting the current lesson to fix the roundabout issue as that is something they should already be competent with at this point?
@How-2-drive
@How-2-drive 4 года назад
Phil Wilson thank you. You should adapt the lesson to meet the needs of the pupil. If they make a mistake try and understand why it happened and get agreement to try again and resolve the issue. Once done, get back to the planned lesson

@@How-2-drive hi Howard. Why if the error made by the pupil requires more learning than the planned lesson originally?
@sbarneaionut
@sbarneaionut 2 года назад
Excellent work Howard. I do have a question. Would it be acceptable to drive the pupil to the planned area? Let’s say that i have somebody on 8 hrs so far and we agree to do junction work and up to that area there are roundabouts and complex junctions, pupil will not be ready to drive there and around test centre is not really suited. Thanks

Hi Howard. Hypothetical scenario regarding adaptation on a Standards check. The plan is dealing with crossings but the pupil messes up a roundabout on the way. It is a ten minute drive to get back to the roundabout and then another ten to turn round again. In real life, I would continue with crossings but plan a route with more roundabouts on the next lesson. Adapting to roundabouts on the test would not provide much opportunity. What do you think?
@luchia4tom134
@luchia4tom134 4 года назад
Not an ADI, but am currently in training, also do NOT have my pink badge, so please bear that in mind! Personally i would discuss with them at earliest opportunity, pulling them over if necessary/ it was a major mistake, find out why they did it and make sure they know the consequences. I would probably get them to go through roundabouts at least once to put theory into practice/ make sure they understand what you discussed, even though it's a 20 minute there and back, if it was a minor mistake and if it was major i would consider changing the lesson to roundabouts. I don't know where you are, but in my area there are a lot of roundabouts so finding a route that has roundabouts near to practice in isn't too difficult. while it won't be possible for every student, if you know they struggle with roundabouts/ never felt confident or comfortable with them, i'd probably try to find routes that have them near and plan a roundabout route as a back up plan in case i needed to change it. or consider two versions of your lesson plan one is the full length of the lesson and the other is half the length, so if something happens that eats your time, in your example 20 minutes, you would switch to the shorter plan. maybe you only give crossings a try with a step by step format, then just make it clear in the debrief that the goals next lesson would be to move onto prompted and independent practice. My instructor told me that it doesn't matter if your whole plan goes out the window as long as the pupil learns or improves something that will enable them to drive safely for life as that is our goal, not making sure they pass their test.

Hi Howard, I’m a PDI with my part 3 in a few weeks. You mention that during the test it would be ok to pull up to provide some theory and keep the balance of theory and practical, complying with competency #2. I have been advised that I am NOT allowed to pull up during my test and must keep the car moving at all times. What’s your advice please?

Please reduce your time and keep yourself to the point. You are a very good instructor but you waste a lot of time on unnecessary things. I hope you understand my point of view.
