Adidas Terrex Free Hiker GTX vs COLD.RDY The Ultimate Out Door Shoe.

The Adidas Terrex Free Hiker GTX has received excellent reviews since its release.
The Adidas Free Hiker is as close to hiking shoe , boot perfection as I’ve ever seen.
I purchased two pairs of Free hikers both in GTX ( Gore -Tex)
I got one “regular” pair and one COLD.RDY pair.
I absolutely love them both. I can honestly say after 5 months of winter/fall use, these shoes are the best hiking boots I have used to date.
They aren’t perfect tho. The sizing is a little trail and error. The top of the shoes is a little tight for my foot even after months of use, and I wish they had a Safety Toe. Besides those minor areas for improvement I haven’t seen a better hiking boot on the market.
Even after months of use these boots both passed the submersion test with flying colors. Some GTX boots will develop leaks after a few months of use, but I’m very happy to report that these are still very much water resistant “proof”.

Appreciate the field testing for waterproofing, really helps!! Not every reviewer would wade in a pond to really test the GTX 👍🏼

Glad you liked the review and found it helpful. Submerging the product is my favorite part because I’ve purchased “waterproof” products before and some have leaked out the box our leaked at the worst possible time… Like on the side of a mountain in the winter smh. So I always like to test my gear.

@@KRTLyfe Hey mate, how is the width on these bad boys for either model. Im looking into the GTX free hiker. Every other gore-tex sneaker/hiker ive tried thus far from nike and reebok has been narrow as hell. Do these hold up in width compared to normal sneakers ?

I just picked up the Terrex Trailmaker Mid GORE-TEX Hiking Shoes based on your review. Got them for 112 because of memorial weekend with a 30% off promo code. They are every bit as impressive as I would hope and more. I filled up the sink and submerged my foot and sure enough they are waterproof. They are so light. Goin to hike in the Amazon next week. Thank you again!!!!

All Gore-Tex shoes are waterproof when new. The problems start to appear after one season of hiking. I've had so many bad experiences with Gore-Tex shoes that I went back to traditional leather boots. They are more breathable, and with the right treatment they are water proof.

Perfect review bud thanks so much. I'm a security guard in the rainy uk on a huge building site and my pair of the cold version arrived today. I've brought them into work and walked through all the biggest puddles which must be 3" deep in places and not even so much as any damp got in. I then came inside and switched back to my trainers as my feet were super toasty! They will also be perfect for cycling or motorcycling in cold wet conditions albeit without the armour of motorbike boots. Snagged mine for less than $200usd so I'm thrilled with them, well worth the wonga! £€$

Cool review of these Adidas hiking shoes. I have been binge watching lots of AT thru hikers RU-vid videos. Majority of them choose not to hike in gortex boots/shoes as they do not dry out quick enough if hiking all day in heavy rain and having to wake through too many streams flowing with deeper water. I might have to buy a pair of Adidas trail running shoes and see if they work for my size 12/2E wide feet. I am leaning towards buying a goid pair of altra mont blonc or Olympus trail sneakers or the hooka speed goat or altra lone peaks model trail shies.
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe Год назад
That is interesting. What materials and shoes are they using? I definitely have not put mine through the same rigors of thru hikers but I have stayed out doors in them for several days on end. I haven’t experienced drying issues at all. I can’t imagine what dries faster than Gore Tex & Nylon coated with DWR. Please share your findings I’m very interested.

They do run large but not large enough to size down. The normal free hikers are too stretchy on the top of the foot which made them horrible to hike downhill in. My current go to hiking shoes are the Arcteryx Aerios GTX, which are superb in terms of lockdown, weight and grip.
@sdemosi
@sdemosi Год назад
Same experience. I found them good on relatively flat terrain, nice to ascend with so long as it wasn't too muddy. They were horrible to descend with. Unbalanced, couldn't heel brake. Just horrible. It felt like trying to descend in a trainer. They're not for mountains as far as I can see. Scarpa, Lowa, Salewa etc make mountain boots.

@@KRTLyfe It is a fairly good trail shoe for longer distance, but the wt is a bit heavy, I prefer the INOV 8 G300 for long run past 15 miles or the Salmon Ultra glide for the same distance. Hoka has the speed goat as well another great contender for trail running. But for slower pace stuff the free hiker is comfortable and long lasting build well…love it for mix stuff like fast packing etc…Hope that helped have a great weekend.

I recently purchased the Adidas Terrex Free Hiker and am giving some thought now to purchase the TERREX FREE HIKER COLD.RDY HIKING BOOT. First time on the channel. Great review and outdoor set-up 👌 just one question I'm hoping you can help me with. So like you rezza I'm looking for something that's not the traditional fresh out the woods, cumbersome, hiking boot. I tried walking in Nike Pegasus GTX Trail Runners but it turns out I'm susceptible to spraining my ankles. So I'm basically looking for something similar, but with added ankle support. So with these being high/mid tops, what's the ankle support like on them compared to a boot and compared to a lowtop trail runner?

Absolutely not, it barely gets cold enough in north Georgia for me to break these out. If you just want to look you could try but I feel like you would get way more usage out of the regular GTX model.

Great video! Are those free hiker GTX (the normal ones) not the cold ones ... are they hot on a walk ? Say over 10 miles? Not very breathable some say? I’m just about to get these or the non goretex version for extra breathability and maybe spray them with nano waterproof spray just so they are breathable over the goretex example. Any thoughts very welcome! ✌️

Hey, great review 😊 I’m thinking of buying the cold.dry version. Do you think it would work alright for rainy autumn and winter days in the city? I’m going to be using them for at least 5-6 hours a day (a couple walking, the rest sitting) and am wondering if they’d get too hot if the conditions aren’t too extreme (negative Celsius, snow etc). Should I just opt for the regular gtx version? (I do clearly prefer the look of the cold.rdy 😂). Hopefully you see this, thanks in advance.
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe Год назад
So IMHO if you live in Toronto, Denver or similar climate I think you would get a decent amount of use out of them. If you live any where south of those cities I would say the “Normal” version is better. I get cold really easy especially my feet and I have struggled to find situations where I would use the COLD.RDY. They are definitely overkill for southern cities like mine.

In weather ranging from 30F to 90f They are very comfortable, dry pretty fast, warm when wet, breath decent for the weight of the material, Zippered pockets I could go on and on about these pants lol. @KRTLyfe

As far as water proof/ resistance they are similar. The Adidas are better for a number of reasons. 1) You can actually get them on your feet with out a fight. 2) The insulation on the Cold.RDY version works really well. 3) BOOST! 4) The Gore-Tex definitely does its job even after a lot of wear no leaks.
