yea to me this bike is not heavy at all. People complain about it being to heavy but I don't see it, it's not as light as a dirt bike, but it's really not heavy either. Now the T-7 or the Africa twin those are a bit heavy.

Adjustment on the Gen 1 and 2 is exactly the same. It is essentially the same motor in all three generations. I live in Aus and simillarly have spoken with many long term Kawasaki mechanics who say they have never had to replace a faulty doohickey. Interestingly a lot of online posts about faulty doohickeys, rarely if ever, mention this routine adjustment process. Doing this adjustment process at service intervals of 6000km for the KLR, is some cheap insurance and is recommended. Laying the bike down is not necessary in any way. Just kneel down while bike on side stand and you have access to the adjustment bolt- not rocket surgery : )
@mymotorcyclelifestyle
@mymotorcyclelifestyle Год назад
The mechanic told me to either have it straight, like on a center stand or laying down either one but not to do it on the side stand, because it's leaning the wrong way, Never worked on a KLR before so just doing what he told me...lol I did not know the adjustment would be the same on the Gen1 and 2 because I didn't ask about that either, only have a gen 3 so it's the only one I was interested in...lol

I have a 22 and have no intentions of every replacing the doo hickey. They did improve the slide material that the chain rides on, which many believe was the actual cause of the problem. As it wore down, the chain got slack in it and the spring could no longer properly tension the chain. Apparently, the actual arm that the spring pulls on, was updated sometime ago. The tapping on the case helps jar things a bit, so that it helps the spring move the actual doo hickey to tighten things up, if it were any slack. Keep fresh oil and maybe don't run the piss out of it and I see no reason to ever replace it. No way am I busting my cases open on an almost brand new bike b/c people say you must replace it. I'm about to adjust mine this weekend. Meant to do it when I did the first oil change about a week ago, but forgot it. Good video to help remind people to keep up with the maintenance!
@mymotorcyclelifestyle
@mymotorcyclelifestyle Год назад
you really wouldn't have had to do it on the first oil change at 600 miles, but this bike I believe will go 7000 miles in between oil changes so that is a lot of time for things to get out of wack..lol

I have the a 2023 S. At 1384 miles the doohicy ate it self. The dealer fixed it under warrenty. I have owned two gen 2's so I am very familiar with these bikes. The owners manual on the gen 3 says nothing on adjusting the tensioner unlike the gen 2 Go figure.
@mymotorcyclelifestyle
@mymotorcyclelifestyle Год назад
wow I'm glad it was taken care of under warranty and you didn't have to come out of pocket for that. This old mechanic told me this is the best way to adjust it, remember only one turn out on the bolt if you go much further you can completely disconnect things in side and will have to take the side of the case off to put everything back together. I was wondering if you have a slack adjuster come apart and that was what caused the problem, I was talking to someone else that said they had that happen, the plastic on the slack adjuster came off and got caught up in there and tore a bunch of stuff up, again on a 23 model and it was covered by warranty as well.
@lophloph07
@lophloph07 10 месяцев назад
That suprising. I did the doo mod on my last 20 year old gen 1 with unknown mileage(alot) and the stock doohicky didnt show any signs that it was going to fail, and had a buddy that put 100k on a gen 2 and never changed the doohicky. Always thought it was unneccessary, but i guess its the luck of the draw.

I'm gonna be honest with you, I thought you was full of crap. I had gen 1&2, but this gen 3 doohickey adjustment only made clunking worse doing it the old way, and I did it on motorcycle jack too. 🤔 Worked first time laying it on it's side. Hats off to you sir, Much Thank's

@mymotorcyclelifestyle
@mymotorcyclelifestyle 7 месяцев назад
I'm not going to worry about that at all, if I have the bike long enough to get 50 thousand miles on it, then I will just replace the spring with a new one, because if you really dig into it, the majority of people that have had a problem, are doing one of two things, they are not checking their oil hence running with little to no oil for long periods, or they have over 50 thousand miles on the bike, so the spring is simply worn out. One of the mechanics I spoke to here has over 300 thousand miles on a gen 2 and he told me that he just replaces the spring every 50 thousand miles so as not to worry about it ever breaking so that is what I am going to do, and yes the Eagle Mike fix still has a spring, it's just a spiral spring instead of a stretched spring, and to be honest all springs can go bad over time so I will just replace mine when it's time, in the mean time I will just do the adjustment every time I change the oil..
@BGPD70
@BGPD70 7 месяцев назад
@@mymotorcyclelifestyle I agree, but I like the spiral spring because it is a part of the mechanism instead of pulling on the mechanism, it's instant. Like I said maybe that'll fix the laying it down part. Stopped in to see Tu and his crew Wednesday at 3D at their new place, great bunch of people. Spent too much as usual.

Normally dont comment on stuff like this but laying the bike on side is completely unnecessary. Its spring tension, u could hang the bike upside-down and it would still work. U also need to back the bolt out at least 1 turn, so it can release itself and the spring can take up the slack. And most importantly is it needs to be torqued correctly at 115 inch lbs for Gen 3's [older Gen's were 78 inch lb's}. Too tight will crack the arm, leading to failure. Too loose and it will create more slack in the balance chain. This is from Kawi's Service Manual in case anyone is wondering
@mymotorcyclelifestyle
@mymotorcyclelifestyle 2 месяца назад
Thank you for the information I appreciate it. I was just doing what an old school mechanic told me to do for this when you don't have a lift or anything. I think laying the bike on it's side is just to keep anything from flopping outward toward the case being on the kick stand. I don't have a torque wrench so I just tightened it back about the same as it was. But I have been working on things my entire life and I'm pretty good at getting close, maybe not perfect but close. On my next service I am going to have them pull that cover and check everything and make sure the spring is still good, and I am going to do that on every service from here on out as long as I own the bike, just to prove that we don't need to replace the doohickey just because someone sells another one. My mechanic said he has been working on these bikes for 30 years and only ever had to repair two in all that time. that is pretty good if you ask me.

I've seen so many videos about the Eagle mike doohickey replacement and how so many of these go bad on these bikes and all that I was real curious to hear from someone that doesn't sell their special part, and who has been working on KLRs forever tell me the same thing, and nope, they said the exact opposite to me. I'm sure if I came up with a part to replace something on a KLR and started getting people to let me replace it on their bikes and made videos about it that before long everyone would thing you should replace it before it goes bad just to be on the safe side, and I would make a lot of money. lol

right on, just remember a couple things, 65 on the highway is the safest speed, it will go faster but get's a wobble, it's not great in the dirt like a dirt bike but will get you where you want to go, and the seat will feel like you are sitting on a fence if you ride for any length of time, but it breaks in pretty fast.

I have lot's of comments from people over the last couple years that have thousands and thousands of miles on their gen 1, gen 2 and even know a guy here in town that owns all three and they all said there is not a real problem with the Doohicky, if there was they would have recalled them,, and there would be a lot more people on you tube making videos about the problem, but there isn't, there is Eagle mike trying to sell his up grade to the doohicky and that is what every one is going by, there have been millions of these bikes sold over the years you would think if there was a problem there would be videos all over you tube about it...lol

I was just showing what the mechanic said could be done if you don't have a way to stand the bike straight up like a center stand, a bike lift or something like that, most people that I know that ride these bikes don't have either one of those things, so in that case it can be laid down and it won't hurt a thing, if you notice at the end of the video when I put the tools away you will see that we do have a lift, but I know most people don't so just wanted to show them how they can do this without one.

So laying it on it's side I am guessing takes the pressure off the rear wheel and somehow helps with alignment? Doing mine tomorrow.
@mymotorcyclelifestyle
@mymotorcyclelifestyle 4 месяца назад
it has nothing to do with the back wheel, it keeps things in the engine from tipping sideways and getting out of alignment, all you want to do is shock it so that if it is out of alignment it will bump back where it needs to go, remember the bolt should be torqued to 8 ft pounds, I don't have a torque wrench so I just barley went a little past snug. don't break or strip that bolt or you will be in a world of hurt.

How many miles are you up to now? Any issues? And are you planning to stay with the original doohickey? Thanks.
@mymotorcyclelifestyle
@mymotorcyclelifestyle 7 месяцев назад
I will keep the original doohickey, because I talked to a mechanic that works on these bikes for 30 years and he said he has never not one time seen one fail. He has had to replace a spring one some that were over 60 thousand miles, but never in all his years seen one fail. So I will leave well enough alone, and I only have about 3000 miles on the bike so far, because you know I have a gold wing also. so I ride the gold wing most of the winter because it's better in the cold, and I don't get much time now owning my own business to go play in the dirt...lol I have not used a drop of oil either, people always talking about the bike using oil and I have not used a drop of oil, and even if I did it's would not be a deal breaker for me, it's a single cylinder low compression bike, most low compression engines are going to use a little oil. I am sure that by the time I change the oil again I will notice some oil consumption.

The person putting out all the video's about the doohickey just wants you to buy their doohickey mod, ask any mechanic that works on these bikes around where you live how many they replaced because of failure, I bet they will say 0 or only 1-2 the doohickey on this bike is not a problem, if it was they would have recalled them years ago and went to a different design but they never have and have been using the same one for 30 years

@eminiscalperpro9729 Год назад
@@giti9915 I did the thermobob on my 22, at about 300 miles, only b/c it makes sense and while not doing it will not be a problem. I got the one without the temp gauge and install was easy. I caught the coolant in a clean container and when I poured it back in, the extended funnel i was using had a mess screen and I noticed a few tiny shavings and what looked like maybe a tiny piece of rubber, not sure But, maybe it was good to get that break in material out of there. I think it does help keep temps more even in the cylinder and it warms up faster which with fuel injection that supposably helps with getting the mixture to the correct setting quicker. Probably more of a benefit in colder climates. you'll probably get at least 50k with or without it.
