Great video. First time I really understood the significance of pre-load adjustment in relation to the quick release skewers. I just got my third set of Zipp wheels and I love them.

Is it normal for them to have a little play when your not on the bike? It seems when I put weight on the real wheel the play comes out. I set the pre-load to the example you have in the video.

from the Zipp website: "Clinch nuts are set at the factory so that there will be a small amount of pre-load and a minimal amount of play in the wheel when installed in the frame with quick release load applied." www.zipp.com/support/maintenance/88-188_hub_maintenance.php When I set my preload per the instructions in this video, that is, to barely hand tighthen the preload nut and then back of 1/16 of a turn, and when I clamp wheel into the frame, I see no freeplay in one zipp wheelset while another zipp set cleary shows some freeplay when wiggling side to side. Both wheelsets spin fine though. I have seen this same inconsistency across many zipp wheelsets, so it appears to be inherit to their hub design

Hi, I deal with the same issue on my Vision Trimax carbon and their PRA system, no matter what I do, there is still lateral play in my rear wheel, have you solved, your problem ?

Hi When adjusting preload on the rear hub, I almost have to tighten it completely before there's no play.. Adjusting it while the wheel and QR is fitted Do I need new bearings??

Did you ever find an answer to this?

I find this pretty hard to do in real. With wheels of the bike I loosing it more fore no friction. But when they are one the bike I feel some friction. Not sure if my bearings are worn out or I'm doing something wrong.

Does it matter which side of the bike the preload adjuster goes?

I find that if I get my preload set, just to the point to where I can feel no play on the wheel, while its on the bike, with the QR tightened, when I take the wheel off of the bike, the bearing feels a bit tight. If I get the preload set off of the bike just to where it feels like there's no play and its not too tight, I can feel play in the bearing once I mount the wheel with the QR tightened. Is this normal?

You can not add pre-load, however you can add load. Pre-loaded bearings have the pre-load manufactured into them! That is why it is pre, meaning before.
