You're welcome; I'm glad I was able to help! From the comments here, it seems like most of these aren't calibrated well when leaving the factory. I'm not really sure why, either. I guess Sony just isn't quite the quality brand it was back in the day.

Just got one secondhand and it was of course too fast. This video was a life saver. Why the hell this info isn't in the manual is a mystery i will never solve.

That's a great idea - that's what I do now when I'm working on turntables like this. Suspending them between two chairs works well, too. You just have to be careful not to move the chairs out from under it and end up with it crashing to the floor...

Do you know what to do if the gummy part is damaged/almost gone? Can’t seem to find a tool to get in there. Do I just need to get smaller precision tools? Thanks

​@@micahjames also struggling with this. Somehow managed to change from 35rpm to 29.9 but can't seem to adjust from there. Update. I managed to get speeds right but 10 months on needs recalibrating again😮

@@micahjames Also having this issue. Turning soft wasn't working so I pushed harder while turning. The rubber is damaged and now the small flat head i'm using is starting to get stuck...

You're welcome! Odd that your speed changed out of the blue - could be that your belt is starting to slip, but I'd bet you would notice other symptoms like increased wow and flutter if that were the case. At any rate, I'm glad you're keeping the vinyl spinnin'!

Glad you were able to get it done. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm using a small eyeglass screwdriver, and pushed past the rubber. However, I'm not feeling anything turn, and I'm getting no change to my speed. My speed is still reading 34.6 rpm.

I'm going to guess that your screwdriver isn't making it into the screw. It's not as much about pushing hard as it is making sure you're actually making it through the hole in the center of the black rubber. Hopefully that helps!

There are two screws: one for the 33 setting and one for the 45 setting!

I tried this today and I’m having the same problem. It won’t change from running @ 60 rpm. Did I short any circuits by doing this?

I may or may not have spent a few hours playing records at random speeds in the creation of this video... ;)

Unfortunately, I don't believe there is a way to replace the cartridge on this turntable with something other than the original model - there isn't even a way to adjust the tracking force. When you say that it sounds low volume-wise, are you running it into a phono input? Do you have the built-in preamp switched on?

I have the same issue. The holes have some soft covering at the deep end, but that's all, they cover nothing.

@@OrcunOzelkok : I finally pushed a very small flat head screwdriver through the soft black substance and gently twisted it around and back and around again until I felt some resistance. I figured that my screwdriver must have found a “screw head” so I took a chance and turned it a small bit clockwise. I then tested the turntable speed with an app on my phone and it played much too fast. So, over a period of about a half of an hour I continued to very carefully turn this “screw head” clockwise and anti clockwise, back and forth, and with each turn I tested the turntable speed. Eventually, through trial and error I got a speed that I was happy with 33.4rpm. I left it at that and now my records play just fine. It’s not easy to do this adjustment and you have to be very careful. I still don’t really know exactly how or what I’ve done l but I’m very happy with the results.

There is a black rubber mat inside the hole presumably to keep dust out. You have to push your screwdriver through a hole in the center of that mat to access the screw. It is a bit fidgety, as you noticed... But that's how it's done!

I'm glad to hear this video helped you solve your problem! You shouldn't have to re-adjust the speed once you get it corrected. I haven't messed with mine at all since I made this video, and it's still stable.

Yes, there's a bit of a barrier keeping your screwdriver from entering the hole. You've got to push through that. It's a bit of an odd setup.

This turntable has a fixed tracking force - there's no way to adjust it. If your needle is jumping around, it's likely you might have a worn/chipped needle. If you have more than around 500 hours on it, I'd suggest replacing it. You also could just have a few damaged records. If you think your turntable is tracking too lightly, you can get a relatively inexpensive scale on Amazon to measure the tracking force - should be around 3 grams if memory serves correct. I wouldn't suggest just increasing the tracking force unless you get a measurement on a scale, as too heavy a force can damage your albums, as well as drastically decrease the life of your needle. I know that was a lot, but hopefully you find it helpful! Feel free to reach out with any questions!

@@mikestech1119 I received it this way when I bought it so I have no idea how many hours it has on it and I have no faulty records. Most of my vinyls are mint or near mint. I believe it came this way with a damaged needle or I may have damaged it when I took it off ( intending to remove only the cartridge cover) so I'm ordering a brand new needle now on Ebay

@@kevinsnodgrass6222 Good call! Any time I purchase a turntable used, I always replace the needle. No telling where the old one has been or what it's been through. For the $20 or so for a new needle, I'd rather not risk damaging my collection with the old one. I'm betting your current needle is chipped - something that can quickly cause irreparable damage to any records you play. So, as I said, good call on replacing it!

I had the same problem. I wanted to make it a little heavier. I put on a plastic tube on the tonearm. And everything is fine now.

Mine sounds accurate when compared to a digital source at 33.0. At 33.3 it's too fast but it may depend on your phone.

It can be a little tricky to find the screw. It sits inside that black rubber piece. If memory serves correct it was a flathead screw. You'll need a pretty small screwdriver such like you'd find in an eyeglass repair kit as it is a pretty small screw. From what I remember, you'll feel the screwdriver drop down into the indent on the screw a tad bit. It's very easy to just turn air and not the screw without knowing it because of the rubber cover. Hopefully this helps; if not let me know and I'll try to explain further.

There is an actual screw inside the little rubber circle. You need to use a small flat-head screwdriver. It might take a moment or two to find the screw, but there is definitely one in there. No, the design isn't the easiest to adjust, but that's how you do it.

Yes, you will need to put the screwdriver through the rubber ring. There's a screw inside that ring that adjusts the speed.

I'm not sure... Are you sure you have the belt installed correctly? Sounds like it could be a problem with the motor. And are you sure you replaced the belt with a proper size replacement?

@@mikestech1119 No but I tried two other belts and it continues to sound warped.

Once you have the speed set where you want it, it should stay steady at that speed. I haven't had to mess with the speed on mine at all since I made this video almost two years ago.

No doubt the placement is a bit inconvenient adjustment-wise but it seems like placing these pots on the bottom is pretty standard. I've got several other turntables from other manufacturers that do the same thing. The best solution? Buy a Quartz-locked Technics turntable. You'll never have to set the speed again.

Are you sure you got the right size belt? Sounds like it might be slipping under the weight of an album & the stylus when playing.

Hmm, without being able to see the turntable itself, it's difficult to give any suggestions. It sounds like your tonearm is stuck in the raised position?

Mine also stopped working but the reason was when turned upside down the belt fell off the platter. That might cause it to act like this.

I'm glad you were able to figure it out. Quality control around how these pots are put together seems to be pretty poor, considering the multitude of comments from folks with similar difficulties.

@grandeurlies i take my phone cover off and it weights 137 grams then. Normal vinyl records weight 120-140 grams i think? New reissues are 180-200 grams. I should check the weight with the cover on and hope its around 180-200.

Yep, you've got to make sure that the screwdriver is in far enough to actually turn the screw. Otherwise, it'll just spin forever and not actually adjust.

You can say that again. There are multiple apps for turntable speed. That one was the only one that was free, aside from one other one that you had to print stuff in order to use.

Agreed. Even better, my two Technics 'tables are Quartz locked, so no need to adjust the speed at all - ever. They both have strobes, and are always spot on. A dial such as you suggest and built-in strobe would be great addition, though would likely drive up the price a bit. I think Sony was going for an ultra-simple, reasonably cheap turntable, and they've done a pretty decent job.

Probably should have made the adjustment screws a bit more easy to access though and easier to fine tune. Never know if you've turned it. Then you over compensate
