Learn how to adjust the intonation so your guitar will be in tune all over the neck!
In this ten part series we look at all the steps you need to take to setup your electric guitar with Master Guitar Technician, Charlie Chandler. In this first video we look at doing a basic condition report and assessing what might be done. We use 'the cheapest electric guitar on amazon' and we end up with something pretty cool!

I could have set the intonation on a couple of my guitars in the time I spent watching this, but for some strange reason, I stayed mesmerized watching Charlie work his magic on this cheap one.

I just added a strobe tuner for this very purpose and I really appreciate the information about pickup heights affecting the strings. This series is getting me to be my own tech! I'm a student at justinguitar.com and a contributor(hint, hint to others); it's definitely worth it.

THANKS. Absolutely imperative. The basics of the physics of sound! The 12th FRET HARMONIC MUST SOUND EXACTLY THE SAME PITCH/frequency as the 12th FRET fretted note. Otherwise the guitar will not sing beautifully ☹️. Absolutely most important. Check out strat talk for further info.

I like mine too - for single-string tuning. But does that "poly-mode" really work well , where a strum should give you tuning for all six strings at once? Not for me I must say...

@@mavriv well to be honest tuner vst is a lot more convenient and to the point, i should say i *used* to use oscilloscope to match harmonic series of guitar string and sine wave, but tuner is just better and faster and you dont have to look at phase of waves constantly

If the G string frets sharp sounding everywhere I found the digital tuners have trouble there and use tempered tuning for that string as dead on sound too high of a pitch ? That means tune by lowering the G a slight amount it sounds tuned , I tune trusting the tuner on all the other strings ! Intonation can be tricky as each finger is different sizes and each frets a bit different ! Fret as you normally play without over pressing the string sharp ! When you bar 2 strings they should sound solid not quavering in and out of tune with each other ! If it bars well on the 3rd fret but badly on the 10th fret either one of the strings is tuned too high or low or your intonation is off ! Its difficult to trust your tuner I found out , pluck hard it goes sharp at first no doubt on the bigger strings ! Let it settle and stay centered on the tuner and then fret a 2 string bar high and low and listen to find the nuances of the process ! The nut setup string height must be right before putting strings on it or your string may all start sharp sounding because the strings height is too high ! I try to lower the G first as it frets high easily as it bends over the fret with more affect on pitch then the other strings ! The top E string open may sound abit sharp compared with the high bottom E but just alittle as this is correct ! It cost me $75 for a set of nut files , I play 10-46 string sets so my files are 13 -50 thousands size ! They were well worth it for my 7 guitars !

Interesting. Wouldn‘t it make more sense to aim for correct tuning with open string + 12th fret? I mean thats what represents playing more than the harmonic, doesn‘t it? I thought the goal is equal string length to the bridge and the nut when using the 12th fret?
@justinguitar
@justinguitar 5 лет назад
open string and 12th fret harmonic are the same, but harmonics ring longer perhaps?
@alfredquecksilber79
@alfredquecksilber79 5 лет назад
JustinGuitar Just been thinking about it again. Using the harmonic always works correctly, while the position of the 12th fret might be a bit off and by using it everything is wrong. I guess that‘s the reason. Thanks for responding!

My strat has a problem with the first string (E). Its a little bit flat on the 12th fret. Can't adjust the saddles inward because the saddle is hitting the bridge screw (6 vintage style screws). To solve the problem i removed the screw on the 1st string so that the saddle can move inward. The intonation is still off but close enough. The intonation screw is running out of threads. 😞 Will changing string gauge help? Right now I'm using 9-42.

JustinGuitar Look at your face at 2:23. What was he saying? He talks in half thoughts without elaborating. An instructional video should be step 1, step 2, etc. At the end if you want you can talk about anomalies. Part of the reason you are so successful in your instructionals is that you play the song first, then break it down, then show alternatives. When someone asks me to help them begin to learn, the first thing I do is show them how to tune, then I de-tune a few strings and make them fix it. Each time they come over I de-tune a few of their strings and make them tune up before we start.

I've tried this method and found that even when I get it to "work" the intonation is off on the first and second positions. I don't play up there often, but when I do, everything sounds too sharp so I compensate by not pressing down too hard on the strings. Is there a way to fix this?

My dilemma right now is when playing an E chord, the g string sounds awful. It's just sharping so hard that it kills me ears. Elsewhere on the neck is fine, but playing blues etc it sticks out like a sore thumb. That damned G string 1st fret kills me !

@@justinguitar it was a tip that I was told..Sometimes but not always,if you fret at the 17th,intonation may be slightly off..Both 12th & 17th should have the same reading..Most times they are accurate but there are times they are not..That is why I go with the 17th as well..Some say it doesn't matter but it works for me..BTW,love your videos..👍👍
