Hey Chuck thanks for the video! I've watched nearly all of your videos and I really like the way you discuss the books. Keep on making vids!

Neil Sing thank you very much! I really appreciate your support. :) Thanks for watching and commenting!

The Glasses Push oh yeah one thing: Have you read The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin? I wonder what your take on it would be.

Neil Sing it's on my list to tackle! What are your thoughts on it? It's a trilogy, right?
@neilsing1891

The Glasses Push it is a trilogy. It's really good IMO. I really enjoyed all three books. If you can, try to go into it without any knowledge of the book. Don't even read the back of the book. :) I think it tackles some things that have been explored before in sci fi in new and intriguing ways. None of the books are very long either but they take some time to read. The material is fairly heavy too so I wouldn't recommend reading it before you go to sleep. I'll be honest, I wanted to make a video about it like you have here discussing it because I feel as though other review videos don't do it justice.

Neil Sing that's already my MO, so no problem there! :) And if I may recommend the series of novels called The Expanse, I think you will really enjoy them. Very scientifically accurate sci-fi. Epic setpieces, diverse characters, and a really engrossing overarching plot.

Yup, flying pyramids and telepathy lol I appreciated that he incorporated their struggle in US history with the idea that all along they developed an insanely complex ability to communicate and travel all the while hiding it from the eyes of their oppressors.

Thanks for the great review Chuck! I had to stop reading this book at 50 or so pages and had to make sure I wasn’t missing something.

mysma4 thank you for watching! My opinion is definitely polarizing, but I did finish the book, and it didn't get better for me. Have you done Rant? I really enjoyed that one. :)

Thanks for the review. It was a painful read, but Palahniuk’s style makes it so that it’s cool to waste away. My fav of him is Diary

Chuck's style is really addictive, so I definitely agree with you there. Have you done much Vonnegut? After this book, I went on a bit of a tear with him, and I found that Chuck seems to be heavily influenced by Kurt's style. Breakfast of Champions is really meta in a way that Adjustment Day and Fight Club 2 got, and Player Piano takes on a lot of similar ideas as this book. Thanks for watching and commenting! :)

Rant is by far my favorite book by him

While I love Choke immensely, I really do think that Rant is his most ambitious and enjoyable book, too. Good call.

Everything you said is exactly how I feel about it and I haven’t even finished it yet. I love Chuck Palahniuk but I’m not really impressed with this one.

Amanda Borowski, thanks! it really troubles me when I don't enjoy a book, especially one by an author I adore. The fact that most people seem to love it also is difficult to reconcile. I certainly try and understand everything a book is trying to accomplish, so I don't think I missed anything. Chuck is a polarizing author, and I guess this is how it feels to be on the pole opposite from him. There are minor bits of payoff near the end, but if you're already agreeing with these thoughts, you (like me) will likely not change your opinion. However, I'd love to hear what you think upon completion!

Just a random comment, possibly the ear tags are in reference to the ear tags used during hunting seasons to make sure that only the allotted amount that can be hunted that season to prevent endangering the species.
@TheGlassesPush
@TheGlassesPush 6 лет назад
James Hatfield - could be.... However, where's the proof that one ear is of a person on the list? I know that's not really the point of the book, but all the same, for satire and commentary, the setup was a little tenuous for me. I like your idea, though. What are your thoughts on the book as a whole?
@Mr.InbetweenFX
@Mr.InbetweenFX 4 месяца назад
@@TheGlassesPushI’m years late, but I just read the book- and there’s a DNA test done to match the ear with the name on the list. That’s how ears are confirmed authentic. (Now how they got every single persons DNA is another question)

Hey man, just finding your channel as we are getting ready to host a read along for this novel. Have you ever considered doing a booktube newbie tag and becoming part of that community?
@TheGlassesPush
@TheGlassesPush 6 лет назад
Stripped Cover Lit you know, I know next to nothing about the booktube world and community, but I'm very interested in learning more. Mind either continuing the chat here or messaging me about it through The Glasses Push Facebook account?

The Glasses Push what would you like to know?

Stripped Cover Lit I think this an Explain It to Me like I'm Five moment. I'm entirely ignorant when it comes the booktube community. In any case, hope your read along goes well and I'm interested in your thoughts on it.

The Glasses Push Essentially it is just a loosely knit group of people who use their corner of RU-vid to talk about books. Like project mayhem but with librarians and English teachers but not like that at all. Your channel is essentially pretty booktube except that you don't do some of the staples like tag videos, hauls, tbrs, wrap ups, etc. Not that you have to do those things, they are just community norms. We only do them on out channel once in a while. Maybe just search out a booktube newbie tag and give it a go, float ot out there? See if you find some members of the community that you enjoy.

I enjoyed this book very much, yes it was a bit hard to read at times, with the racial aspect and all that (I agree with your description “fast and loose”) but over all I enjoyed the read. I honestly believe if you were to remove 1 maybe 2 aspects from this story, it could be“Fight Club part 2”. I enjoyed your review and will look into others you’ve made. Keep up the good work.

I like this book. It reminds me little sometimes Fight club but when he comes to fiction it little lost me. But overall I like it much. There are very clever quotes which resonates. I think if there weren't those fictional segments this book would be cancelled. This book would have resonates in people more than Fight club. I think it is on purpose to calm down elites.

Thanks for this review... Im in the final stretch (last 30 or so pages) and Im gonna finish it but I was feeling what you're saying that theres little cohesion and the book fails to make any sort of point, Doesnt give anything to digest on, and doesnt even do anything cool or fun between its too many characters... Reading this for the first time in a post Trump post covid world it starts with a lot of potential and i connected to the idea of there being a Before Time as thats what i refer to the about half decade pre covid and how our political climate has shaped begore during and after those things. The book feels like its setting up something almost prophetic in its first few pages but it feels like Chuck tried to do too much without thinking or researching or even asking anyone anything about any of the ideas satirical or otherwise that hes put in this novel... The only other guy with a video about this book didnt go into too much detail but i totally understand how thinking about this book too much seemed to have given him a headache.... And i see why this book hasnt made any waves in the years since

Jody Nuckols, I am painfully aware, and I feel your pain. It's a work in progress. I do hope my commentary at least partially makes up for it, but all the same, I'm woefully aware of how slow my brain is to say the right words. :) Thanks all the same for watching.

Maybe the worst book review ever. It’s just a 22 min love letter. If a teacher ask for this as a report.. FAILED. Didn’t flesh anything about the book out. I’m to annoyed to get past the 15min marker

I thought it was a little better than decent. It was sufficiently cohesive and he concluded with an opinion on the book as a whole. I think this comment rather describes itself concerning the “fleshing out” of the issue- and if you even watched it you’d immediately realize it’s nothing close to a love letter. It’s a medium soft pass for him, he didn’t like it.

I was really hoping for another man's opinion on this book, as I was also very disappointed with it. But this dude isn't a man, he's just this weird little sniveling thing.

Hedd McNekk not sure why you felt compelled to comment that way. I'm all for discourse and sharing of opinions, but this isn't productive at all. If you'd like to share your thoughts on the book, I'm happy to hear them, though.
