Treasure Planet is a 2002 animated film from the Walt Disney corporation. It is number 43 in the Disney Animated Canon. It is Disney's second adaption of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, after the 1950's version of the film. Instead of being a straightforward adaptation, Treasure Planet changed much from the original work, most notably taking a science fiction direction. It's a fusion of old and new, both in genre and in art styles. While its often known as a 2D animated film, it's actually a 2D-3D hybrid. Most of the biological characters are traditionally animated, while most of the cybernetics and manufactured objects are in CGI. (John) Silver, the cyborg is a fusion of both, and is sometimes noted as the first character in film that is both 2D and 3D animated.
The movie is, in my mind, a defining member of the "retro futurism" genre, in which a creator will look to the past and how the past envisioned the future, a mindset that helped spark the "punk" genres (cyberpunk, steampunk, biopunk, etc). The movie combined an 1800's idea of space travel - where space was an ocean of a liquid called aether with our modern understandings of black holes, cyborgs, and robotics. This unfortunately alienated many audience members, as its not the most readily accessible subgenre of sci-fi.
Treasure Planet was a box office failure, and in the modern era, that is what it's most known for, and the dominoes it set off. It has often been blamed for Disney shuttering their 2D animation department. After its financial failure, Disney finished their final two traditionally animated films - Brother Bear and Home on the Range, and have largely moved on from 2D animation, with the exceptions of Princess and the Frog and 2011's Winnie the Pooh. It's hard to blame Treasure Planet for such a colossal industry change, beyond being a final domino, but that seems to be its place in history.
But what if we were to go beyond that and ask ourselves... is Treasure Planet any good? The answer, as it turns out, is yes.

If Soul was the Finale to Admirable Animations, then Treasure Planet is the Epilogue. I'm glad to see Mr. Enter is keeping the more positive side of his reviewing alive (even in spirit), and hope to see him doing more reviews like this from time to time.
@brysonturner6019
@brysonturner6019 3 года назад
I agree. Making positive reviews into a series just pressures people to keep making more of them, so the series can continue. In this case, where positive reviews are just their own standalone videos birthed from a creator's desire to praise something about a specific work, it makes that praise feel special. I could really see why John loves this movie. Heck, it maybe think back to when I saw the movie for the first time a while back and I have similar thoughts.

@@leonardofarias8843 Actually, John isn't really forcing the negativity. Criticism comes naturally to him. John's said before it's easier to describe why something is bad than it is to explain why something is good. Therefore, it's easier for Animated Atrocities to be an ongoing series because there's no shortage of content that deserves to be criticized. Admirable Animations puts pressure on John to keep making positive reviews, which is harder for him to do. It's like if you're FORCED to do your chores, you're going to hate doing the chore and not do a good job. Instead, you deciding to do the chore for yourself means the end result will be a lot more effort being put into the chore. It's the same thing with Admirable Animations. Without the pressure tp HAVE to put out an Admirable Animation, instead he can make a positive review whenever he feels like it, which means that if John makes a positive review about something, it means he REALLY likes it.

I'm 20 years old, and my friends and I lump this in with films like Lilo & Stitch, Shrek, and Emperor's New Groove as some of our favourite most nostalgic films. In Ben's defense, as someone who actually likes him, he is literally missing a chunk of his brain when we meet him. His behavior during that phase is not entirely his fault. We don't get much of Ben with his brain intact, and what little we do get is within the context of him escaping a planet that is literally exploding around him (so it's understandable that he's a little panicked and screamy), so it's hard to tell if that's how he actually is when fully functional.

I don't know. How about we asked Square about their fixation on flying pirate ships from the late 80's through the 2000's? Maybe Bioshock? Super Mario? Skies of Arcadia? *wink* The people asking that question weren't around during those times, when the prospect of exploring the world on a flying ship was among the pinnacles of fantasy concepts. And while doing so through space is impractical, so are flying pirate ships in general. That's kind of the point! These ideas were conjured up to create fun and interesting adventures, and honestly, the idea of space existing as a 3-dimensional ocean that you can sail through without drowning makes for a hell of a unique setting and story. For similar reasons (and great gameplay), Jamestown kicks ass! Anyone would be doing themselves a disservice not trying that game at least once.

That's a flawed argument since it could be used to justify anything. The big problem is that there are ships in space but the movie doesn't do anything with this concept. And no having a few cool scenes is not the same thing. If you were representing each destination on a journey as a different planet then that would be using this concept since each new planet could a different climate or race on it. But going from one planet to another planet isn't more novel than sailing from a country to an island. Honestly if they'd stuck to regular spaceships and futuristic clothing this movie would have been better received since a futuristic version of Treasure Planet would be more appealing than a retro-future version simply because futuristic aesthetics are appreciated by a wider audience.

@@uanime1 I disagree, after the double flop of Fox's TITAN AE, No one was gonna think the everything futuristic route was a good idea and it wouldn't have had the same cult following it does today. Like how the Wellerman made a comeback in music without anybody turning it into a turnt edm. You might say they "didn't do anything" with the ship setting, but they kind of did. It wasn't just an aesthetic, it was the feeling-the pulsing under your feet as your called to adventure, the rushing ebb and flow as you experience what it truly means to be adrift in the seas with only your companions beside you, and That feeling of coming into yourself, the Age of Sail born anew... But they truly wouldn't set that feeling into flesh until the first Pirates of Caribbean Movie came out a year later. And I truly feel that if Treasure Planet came out the year after that one it would've been a hit.

and the thing is that they would not be too difficult so adapt into a more modern contexts or format. like you could easily make a atlantis the lost empire remake or tv series(i would think tv series might work better), or even a series based on the world of treasure planet. for treasure planet take almost any high seas pirate film and then set it in their version of space. could have some great and interesting elements with massive space fleet battles, swashbuckling action, as well as the blend of interesting aliens, tech, and distinct characters, all with a decent blend of tones. of course making sure the characters work is important, but that is always going to be something you need to be careful of. similarly with atlantis, you could incorperate a mixture of history, sci-fi, and the pulp adventure feel, while expanding on some of what was there. as a series, you could add in more as needed to help flesh out the characters, world, and story. it could also be used to invest a bit more time into certain moments. you could make the battles bigger and more climactic, the city and people more relatable, and of course make rourke an even better villain by carefully seeding the darker elements of his personality throughout as we watch him go practically mad with greed and the desire for personal glory.

Great characters, great story- and the technology they used seems dated sometimes, but looks amazing for most of the movie! Really makes me wonder what 2D animation would look like today if big studios didn't abandon it, and continued improving on it instead. Though with some of the stuff we've been seeing recently, I'm hoping 2D or mixed-media films will be getting a come back soon :)

@@uanime1 Yeah, "let your inner child out" is a lame thing to go around saying. You actually CAN justify anything with that. Here's my take on the boats: it's a solarpunk/steampunk style setting with huge Victorian influence, so massive space-boats are the perfect way to both have something fantastical as well as grounded for the actual source material story of Treasure Island. The boats are realistic, but not too realistic, so people know exactly what the crewmates are supposed to be doing, what sort of maneuvering there's going to be, and because a captain taking the helm and whipping it to make a turn has been dramatic and awesome since forever. You could argue that going the Space Pirate Harlock route would have been better, but honestly I don't really think the "Space ship with a very sailboat-like crew" thing is something Disney should go for. Someone else in these comments said, "we already act like space is an ocean, why not transplant the swashbuckling heroism of the Golden Age of Piracy to the sea of stars!" which I wholeheartedly agree with. Anyways, it's basically all aesthetically amazing. @uanime1 3 года назад
@@-ShiraZen- "Here's my take on the boats: it's a solarpunk/steampunk style setting with huge Victorian influence" The problem is that it's the opposite of steampunk. Basically in steampunk they try to make modern technology using their primitive technology, such as having airships instead of airplanes. In this movie they have advanced technology but make it look like ancient technology for no reason. "so massive space-boats are the perfect way to both have something fantastical as well as grounded for the actual source material story of Treasure Island." That would work if the boat could be anything but this ship just happens to look like a Victorian ship. Like how in Wacky Races no one complains about how the cars look because they're supposed to match their owner's personality. "Someone else in these comments said, "we already act like space is an ocean, why not transplant the swashbuckling heroism of the Golden Age of Piracy to the sea of stars!" which I wholeheartedly agree with." Well leaving aside what piracy actually entailed that is more difficult than it seems. If you lean too much into the piracy aspect then you won't be using the space aspect and may as well set it on a planet with a lot of islands (like Pirates of Dark Water). If you use the space aspect more then it can result in a story that is very different from piracy. Star Wars may be Medieval fantasy in space but it's far more focused on the space part. "Anyways, it's basically all aesthetically amazing." Very true.

The love story being two other characters gives them more to do and an expansion on their novel counterparts. This is how you gender flip a character, she’s still a badass and has more of a storyline, but her gender isn’t a plot point or even a part of the character beyond the romance (nor is romance the sole purpose of the character).

Personally, I never had a problem with the artstyle - it's a fantastic and enthralling idea. It's the same reason why I'm fond of DnD's *Spelljammer* setting - we already act like space is an ocean, why not transplant the swashbuckling heroism of the Golden Age of Piracy to the sea of stars? Science Fiction and Fantasy are the same thing, and the division between them is an artificial one forced onto fiction by the snobby editors of 1960s magazines like *Analog* who only wanted to read about Men with Big Screwdrivers Fixing Social Ills. The Medieval Travellers' Tales (stories of travel in far off places like India and China) are full of dog-headed men, men whose faces are in their chests, men with one giant foot, eagles big enough to pick up elephants in their claws, magic, mystery, adventure, the works! They're pretty much the same thing as science fiction stories, it's just that once we explored the entire surface of the Earth we had to move the dog-men to other planets instead of India or Darkest Africa.

"Science Fiction and Fantasy are the same thing" Not even close. Sci-fi is often more mundane than fantasy, that's why the term science fantasy was invented to cover things like Star Wars. Being this stupid. Try reading the books by Isaac Azimoth, such as 'I, Robot'. Trying to fix problems with machines is sci-fi but it's not fantasy. "The Medieval Travellers' Tales (stories of travel in far off places like India and China) are full of dog-headed men, men whose faces are in their chests, men with one giant foot, eagles big enough to pick up elephants in their claws, magic, mystery, adventure, the works!" I greatly enjoyed this video, it's funny how just before you uploaded the tier list, one of my friends shared something claiming that The Emperor's New Groove is Disney's most underrated film & I came at him with saying that Treasure Planet has a few words to say about that, he agreed with me that Treasure Planet takes the cake in it. The timing on your upload on that was amazing. For me, Treasure Planet has become a more important movie in my life. A good friend of mine I've known since my freshman year of high school in 2007. She was obsessed with Treasure Planet, her art style reflects that too like if you look at her mid 2000's sketchbooks, you can definitely tell she's a fan of Treasure Planet. She wrote fanfics for it & it was often times something she'd talk about. I was into beading & making Shrinky Dinks at the time so I made a Morph necklace for her as a birthday present one year. When I'd rewatch the movie, I'd think of her. During 2020, this friend was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. It was terrifying because with her going through chemo during a pandemic, there was a lot of uncertainty & I couldn't be there for her in person for obvious reasons. Thankfully, she is recovering well. She's not out of the woods yet but feeling better on the whole situation. Watching Treasure Planet helped me feel like I was spending time with her, watching her favorite movie. There's other memories associated with the film like I did see it in theaters & I saw Ben during my 2002 Disneyland vacation, I chased him down instead of standing in the long line to see Stitch but I was hoping to see other Treasure Planet characters, I remember just meeting Ben sadly but at least his autograph is cute. I met Stitch later btw. One sad story is enough but I will say I did show this movie to my cousin's daughter while her dad, my cousin was in prison which might of been a bad call given how much of a disaster things were, seriously if you knew the things my cousin did, you wouldn't believe this is a real person because he did some seriously messed up stuff, attempted murder is on the list. I did realize this wasn't the best choice in movie to show her because this had to of hit hard but maybe it will cause her to appreciate it when she gets older? I don't know but I am kicking myself over the poor choice in movies towards her situation. She was over for a happy time too, we were celebrating my birthday & I even baked cupcakes for it, we sat & ate cupcakes while watching the movie together.

Well, Brother Bear was one of the few films during that era which made a decent profit; probably since it had a wider appeal based on the marketing.

As someone who liked Treasure Planet even back when it released, I was actually very surprised to learn that it was disliked so heavily and did so badly. I remember being mesmerized seeing everything on the big screen.

I would make the argument that the visual style and setting is reminiscent of Final Fantasy 7 and 8, where they combine science-fiction and high-fantasy.

Thank you so much for this! Treasure Planet is not just my favourite Disney movie, but one my most favourite movies of all time. It's always hurt just a little bit to see it panned so badly and ignored since. It deserved so much more than it got.

I watched Treasure Planet on Disney plus. I thought that despite on the surface sounding bad and having a few weird moments and stuff like that i thought it was a great movie.

Great news, everyone! Mr. Enter has retroactively labeled this video Admirable Animations #61. The Rugrats episode Mother's Day, which was Admirable Animations #61, is now Admirable Animations #62.

Ngl, you are right about one thing that separates John Silver from the other Disney Villains is that he has an arc, from being a villain to an anti-villain or anti-hero after bonding with Jim Hawkins, to reverting back into a villain (but does shows hints of his nature that represent an anti-hero), to choosing to save Jim and leave the gold behind before the planet exploded making him a change man sorta way.

Great video, but there's a small inaccuracy in your review: Don Bluth and his studio didn't make use of cgi until the 90's, with all of his early movies instead making use of xeroxed live action footage of physical props (and in some cases more traditional rotoscoping), which is a technique Disney used before in 101 Dalmatians and The Rescuers (the latter of which Bluth actually worked on). And even then Disney pioneered using a less advanced variant of this technique back in the late 30's on Pinocchio for a the sequence featuring Stromboli's wagon moving.

This movie is hella underrated! The score fills you with excitement and tenstion. The plot was different and very deep n powerful and made the whole "space pirate" joke that young kids wanted to be a reality in an epic way! A mix of old and new technology shows the world of the movie was in an interesting era. The animation was gorgeous and drew you into the world! Voice acting was a gem xD great funny lines for loveable charaters! Im glad to see others who appreciate it!

Doug Walker's aptitude at film criticism and analysis is poor and shallow at best. It's something that became increasingly apparent since his revival as the Nostalgia Critic. The reason people overlooked it from the beginning was because he was the only game in town on Internet Riff Comedy and he usually picked apart low-hanging fruit like Batman&Robin or Garbage-Pail Kids. It was only until he started covering recent, popular, or beloved media or media that feature intellectually heavy material that his limits are shown (especially if he didn't bother to research themes or film-making techniques used to tell a a narrative, or completely missed the point entirely and gets side-tracked by this one minor detail). It doesn't help that since his revival, people have popped up in the Internet who are experienced in film criticism and analysis; they've either studied it or engage with it as a hobby, making Doug's weaknesses even more glaring. His review of The Wall completely encapsulated Doug Walker's limits as a critic and comedian.

So glad this movie is getting more attention. I loved it as a kid and I still love it now. If anything, this movie and Atlantis deserve a live action remake just to get them back on the Disney map. At least for those who either don't remember them or have never watched them.

While not the first film or series to put "ships into space", you had Space Battleship Yamato first coming in the early 70s and Odin: Photon Sailer Starlight released back in 1985, this one has a lot more heart and soul poured into it.
