I was never a Disney kid growing up, but for this Hidden Sci-Fi Gem we take a look at Treasure Planet, one of the biggest flops in the studio's history. It doesn't make Treasure Planet any less enjoyable though.

This film is the definition of 'should've been a bigger hit.' The only reason it wasn't is because Disney did it dirty: not advertising, releasing at a bad time, etc.

Today, how do we react to remakes that take the original idea in a new direction? Eg. Fem Ghostbusters. Total Recall. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Usually we see it as a bad idea We saw these types of movies in the same way back then. We disliked the idea totally

For all of those that want this underrated masterpiece to be remade, it's actually not such a good idea at all because it's already perfect. It just needs to be re-released in theaters in 3D, IMAX 3D, and 4DX instead. Remaking it will only ruin it.

Not necessarily....I for example are extremely found of the Orson Welles Version (best John Silver ever!!!), there is a German multi-parter which was extremely successful back in the day, there is an Italien Production called "Der Schatz im All" which did the whole "Treasure Island in Space" thing long before Disney did (and did it pretty great too, if you want a more "realistic" take on it) and I guess people love the Muppets one....but it is certainly one of the good ones.

I'm grateful for your comments about Jim. I've seen a lot of reviewers, even those who praise the movie, label Jim as one of the weak points, complaining about Jim being the typical moody teenager while seemingly not realising that it's the entire point of his character, and that he evolves out of that label through the movie.

This and Atlantis are my favorites, and I'm an 80's kid. Sure, Treasure Planet didn't make me cry like Lion King did. Sure, Treasure Planet didn't have a song like Hell Fire, like Notre Dam had. I'm glad I'm not the only one who absolutely adored this film. There's a pretty good CinemaWins about it, too. Check it out if you haven't seen it. I loved the idea that, instead of doing what other sci-fi often does and Treknobable a scientific explanation, Treasure Planet just had some completely different physics, like the universe being filled with a warm, pressurised, breathable luminiferous aether, but still referred to a lot of existing astrophysical phenomena (such as active galactic nuclei) I agree with you wholeheartedly with the characters, but the colonial-futuristic aesthetics and the sound track were what made me fall in love with it as a 16 year old sci-fi geek. When it comes to the open air caravels, being able to breath while sailing space is possibly due to the ships generating a life support bubble. Life support is never addressed, but ship generated artificial gravity is. With that in mind, it can be assumed that life support also exist. Depending on the perimeter of the atmosphere, the first-mate being thrown overboard while attached to a lifeline and able to breathe is plausible. Even if bothered by spacefaring caravels, the magnificence of the beautiful animation is superb. Keeping the caravels, harks back to the original "Treasure Island" in this scifi adaptation.

@@diyana_/videos Exactly. This movie was made and released back when Disney took risks and tried something new and different. They tried to avoid the Disney formula as much as possible and in cases like this, it really worked. That allowed Disney movies like this to become unique in their own special way without having to rely so much on the exact same formula in order for them to become high-quality, mature, memorable, and timeless classics that take their audiences seriously, even if some of them were financial failures like this one. That's why the movies that were released between 2000 and 2007 were part of the Experimental Era. Unfortunately, since the past decade, Disney has been producing and releasing formulaic, bland, dated, uninspired, forgettable, immature, low-quality, and style-over-substance cash-grabs that insult their audience's intelligence and play it safe, like Frozen, Frozen 2, and Ralph Breaks The Internet. The company stopped caring about quality and started focusing on making a quick buck. Had this movie done so much better worldwide, it would've definitely encouraged Disney to continue making and releasing more unique, mature, high-quality, and timeless masterpieces like this. And this movie was literally a love letter to both Treasure Island and it's author, Robert Louis Stevenson.

2000’s Disney dropped some of the greatest and sadly most underrated Disney movies and products of all time. And of course I’m bias because I grew up and the nostalgia is there, but for sheer inventiveness and storytelling there is no better time in Disney history. We got Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Emperors New Groove and more, plus it made Dreamworks step up their game with Sinbad, Price of Egypt and Road to El Dorado, movies so good that if you didn’t know they weren’t Disney you wouldn’t have a clue! Animation peaked in this generation and I was sad to see Disney movie further and further away from their traditional art style in favour of 3D animations from Frozen onwards. Princess and the Frog was the last traditionally drawn 2D animation and that is still heartbreaking to this day

Treasure Planet was a 💌 to both Treasure Island and it’s author, Robert Louis Stevenson.

it speaks volumes that at 19 years old, i still watch this movie and enjoy it just as much as i did as a child. the sound track, animation, visuals, characters and storyline are just... as close to perfection as animated films come imo. it’s such a sin what disney did to this masterpiece.

You know what else is underrated and about a planet? CAPRICA.

I expect someone has already pointed out that Skies of Arcadia already did the "sailing ships" themes (albeit in the sky, hence the name) before Treasure Planet. Many similarities.

I also never grew up with Disney. This one movie was the exception and it was a pure delight . I loved everything about it....except morph I really don't like morph lol

Agree, this movie is super underrated. Why can't Disney do this as their next live-action remake? (I mean, I know why, but it'd still be cool)

I wasn't a kid anymore, far from it, when this came out and I loved it. So full of adventure and, as you said, a great emotional center. Victim of the times.

The flying wind-surfer seen and mentioned looks suspiciously like a powerboard straight out of 2000ADs Judge Dredd. See the Midnight Surfer storyline for better look at this.

Haven't seen Treasure Planet, but as always, love your passion. However, Battlestar! More my "ballpark" mate. Your choice in the comments, young Lee. Great character, sensational actor... but! In the grand scheme of all things Galactica, pretty vanilla. And he had this kind of passive agressive (occasionly plain 'ol aggresive) swinging pendulum when it came to "loyalty", relatively speaking like. I'll second that motion though.

Doesn't quite reach the awesomeness of muppet treasure Island but it's hard to compete with Tim Curry
@1992disney
@1992disney 4 года назад
Nah. This is superior to the Muppet version in so many ways. Even Tim Curry's performance couldn't top Brian Murray's vocal performance. Besides, it's a musical with Tim Curry being Tim Curry. Not saying that Tim Curry was a bad actor, though.

Great video man! Thank you! I'd be interested what you think of some other scifi animated films such as Titan AE. Also, have you ever seen Starchaser: The Legend of Orin? it's an animated starwars rip-off with some kinda freaky imagery and weird sexual innuendos... very odd, but worth a look. I saw it about 15 years ago last!
