One of my classmates had a somewhat similar situation. As a Midshipman, he once went to the Admiral's office and asked to see the Admiral. The secretary, not knowing any better ask the Admiral if he would see Midshipman X. Upon meeting Midshipman X, the Admiral asked him why he was there, and he replied, "I've never met an Admiral before and I see your name all over the place, so I thought it would be interesting to meet you." Although stunned, the Admiral was a good guy with a sense of humor, and invited Midshipman X to have a cup of coffee with him. At the end of their 'meeting', the Admiral said: "Son, don't ever do anything like this ever again" and bid him goodbye. Strange as it is, the Admiral kept an eye on my classmate, remained in contact him and became a sort of Godfather. Both had long and excellent careers. I always think the Admiral got much more enjoyment out of telling the story about some 'madman' who once came in his office...

The comment about you standing there in front of the ship’s captain, answering questions about the card, is priceless.

Good story.... Thanks for your service as a squid.....Was stationed with an E-4 in the USAF whose first name was "Colonel". He was great on the phone and could by pass some red tape for equipment we needed.

One of my fellow shave-tails on my first duty assignment was the son of the highest ranking USAF officer killed in the Vietnam War. He was a nice quiet guy who never mentioned it. I only found out by accident while conducting research for a paper I was writing. He eventually retired as a two-star.

Wise to keep your USN relations secret. Until they were not...I crossed that bridge when I was at PH to tour the USS Arizona and Ford Island. Some strafing bullet holes had been left in one of the hangars. To my long lasting regret, I missed touring the USS Missouri. I had pulled muscles in both legs doing the Haiku Steps trail the day before and could scarcely walk, let along do all of the ladders I knew were on the battleship. Oh well.
