How to use Adobe Audition CS5 tools to remove individual noises from audio clips.
NOTE: CS6 has the same set of tools. CC added the Sound Remover effect which is useful when removing dynamic (changing over time) "foreground" sounds like cell phones and sirens.

It depends on the noise and the frequency. All I can suggest is that you find a segment in the audio clip with no speech, only the unwanted noise, and use that segment as your noise sample.

The Auto Heal function is actually using what is known as linear interpolation rather than cross fading. It is different in the sense that Audition is removing all of the audio in that area entirely. It then uses a set of complex mathematical algorithms, partnered with some very clever psycho acoustics to predict what would have been there. In simpler terms, it looks at the sound waves and what trajectory they are on to make an assumption as to what should be there. Provided only a short area has been processed, the software is able to make a pretty darn accurate prediction as you can see here! Sorry to correct you on this one but removing audio and then cross fading is much more crude and simply wouldn't achieve results like this tutorial shows us. Great video! Thanks for posting, I know the theory and have seen it done back in uni, but have never done it in practice so, it is great to see a well made video before I go and buy my copy of Audition. Thanks again :-)

+Adam Wenman If any of that stuff doesn't make sense, please go and Google the terms. You will find the info quite fascinating. We are in a golden age for audio production and restoration and companies like Adobe are making the seemingly impossible a reality. Happy restoring!!!!

You can copy any selection from within the Spectral Frequency display and paste it onto another clip. If you use Mix Paste, you can replace what was there or mix it with what is there. It will be pasted wherever you have the Current Time Indicator and will be pasted into the same frequency range it was copied from.

Those are individual sounds, so this tutorial should help you with them. If there is a place where you can hear the rumbling noise caused by the mic movement and there is no speech there, you can use that segment as a noise sample and use the Noise Reduction effect.

@JeffSengstack

It depends. If it's isolated noise, that is the breath noises are not covering other audio, then you can use the Auto Heal method I described in this RU-vid video. If they are mixed in with other audio, then you might want to try to capture a noise print of a portion where there is no other sound (spoken words) and use the Noise Reduction effect to attempt to remove the noises. But the results probably won't be satisfactory since the breath noise isn't constant (it changes in volume and pitch).

@JeffSengstack

I'm pretty sure this is a bug. The work-around is to select an area that does not include the full frequency range (if you use the Time Selection Tool, it always selects the full frequency range). In any event, after making your selection, just pull down the top of the selected area slightly. Then, I'm pretty sure the favorite will work.

Right-click on the clip in a sequence and choose "Edit Clip in Adobe Audition" or right-click on the clip in the Project panel and choose "Edit in Adobe Audition > Clip." Both choices create a new audio file with the word "extracted" in the file name. Use Audition noise reduction/removal tools on that file, save it, and those changes will show up in Premiere Pro.

How would you do to remove somebody else's voice that are in the background? There is the main narration, a lady voice, but there are some male voice in lower volume at the background. Is there any specific tool to deal with it or some combination of them? Congrants about your channel it is very informative.
@JeffSengstack
@JeffSengstack 9 лет назад
Canal da Lulu Removing someone's voice while other people are talking is too difficult to do with an single effect. I suggest that if the male voice pitch is way below the other voices you can cut or reduce that frequency range...but that will affect the other voices too. And you can use a limiter to drop the volume when the foreground voices are not speaking. That's all I can suggest.

Hello, nice tutorial , very helpfull! I have a little problem with my sound, during an interview for a documentary in wich the recorder was not used in a tripod but someone was holding it, the problem is, I can hear a lot of times some noise that looks like he is moving, like the microphone is hitting somewhere.... At the beggining I couldn't ear it, but after normalization and EQ the sound was amplified along with the voice and its pretty noticable...

Also for problems like with the cell phone could you do a voiceover in a controlled setting to insert in there with maybe a copy of the background noise for the original track mixed in (so that it sounds original)?
@JeffSengstack
@JeffSengstack 10 лет назад
Sure. But you would need enough background noise without the voice-over on it. If you don't have enough, you could use a brief clip and then lay down multiple instances in the editor panel with brief cross fades between them.

Removing the drum sounds of that song is beyond the automated capabilities of Audition. And using the manual method I describe in this video to remove the sounds one at a time would be tedious and probably would not work all that well.
