Before I say something about the biography, I want to thank everyone who decided to donate something recently. It always makes me really happy to see that I also get a bit financially out of the work here on youtube. I am still very busy with my phd thesis in maths (and I sort of really wonder how I still upload a new piece almost every day) but I just love playing these forgotten and obscure pieces and present them to you :) This was first published in 1839, so composed before he was 20 years old.
Gutmann (1819-1882) was born in 1819 in Heidelberg. In 1834 he moved to Paris to take lessons with Chopin.
He soon became Chopin’s favourite pupil, a touring pianist and the dedicatee of the Scherzo in C sharp minor, Op. 39. In the Parisian Salle Pape, in March 1838, he performed together with Chopin, Zimmerman and Alkan, playing the Allegretto and the Finale of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, arranged by Alkan for eight hands and two pianos.
Next to Fontana, Gutmann was the main copyist of Chopin’s works. He belonged to the closest circle of Chopin’s entourage and was a devoted companion to his master in the last years of the latter’s life. In 1866 he travelled to Egypt, Syria and Palestine and after the Franco-Prussian War moved to Florence. In 1880, he settled in La Spezia, where he died in 1882.

Très belle pièce. C'est tellement dommage que de très nombreux compositeurs, célèbres à leur époque, soient maintenant oubliés. Grand merci à ceux qui nous les font revivre.

Every single one of Chopin's pupils got a wonderful penchant for writing beautiful melodic lines. Tellefsen, Mikuli, Gutmann, Filtsch. Perhaps they imbibed it from the master by listening to his playing and demonstrations all the time. None of them have been original, but what's wrong with that? The piano still sings of Chopin.

So true. Chopin was so influential to the world of piano and so much more upon his pupils. ❤

There are much more pupils of Chopin than this very restricted list made by Naxos

Yes, I love how you can definitely hear a bit of the master in the pupil's work. Once again, amazing job with the performance. this is an exquisite little piece.

Comme c'est beau ! Merci de nous offrir cette magnifique pièce musicale. Cela aurait été tellement dommage de la laisser oubliée dans un coin de grenier.

Beautiful, enchanting. And, yes, salt and pepper conjuring up his teacher but it's 90% personal style and just 10% owing something to Chopin, mostly in nuances and vaguely in couple of modulations. And extremely well played as usual

Thank you so much for this beautiful one. So far I went a bit deeper in tellefsen and Gutmann (among Chopin’s pupils) and both are amazing but with very different styles, I feel. Without you I would not even have heard of them!

Gutmann was Chopin's favorite student. This statement makes you look like a fool.
@republiccooper
@republiccooper 2 года назад
@@PianoScoreVids What's with the insults, man? I read your notes and I'm a pianist. I mean it's a Chopinesque melody but like for young or baby pianists because it is much less difficult technically. It's like an introduction to Chopin's approach. Your comment makes you seem on edge and unduly aggressive.
@PianoScoreVids
@PianoScoreVids 2 года назад
Your follow-up comment specified that labelling this piece as suitable for "babies and beginners" only applies to the technical difficulty of this piece. I am not sure what the value of that comment is. What the actual purpose of that kind of comparison is. The connection to Chopin by "like Chopin" arises from a Chopinesque melody. Gutmann was his student and he was not even 20 when he wrote that. It is quite clear that it will sound similar to Chopin. Also I am not sure why you are including the information that you are a pianist.
@republiccooper
@republiccooper 2 года назад
@@PianoScoreVids when a statement is said that can be interpreted various ways, the interpretation reveals the person who interprets and not the speaker. It's like seeing the glass half full or half empty. I have followed and supported your channel a lot by sharing content on Facebook platforms with hundreds of pianists. I don't think I'll stop yet. But you have an emotional issue that you should probably see someone about. There's enough conflict in the world. I'm not going to add to it. I've given my advice and will move on.
@republiccooper

@@PianoScoreVids Spend a little time thinking about why I said I'm a pianist. It relates clearly to why I said the piece is for beginners. But I prefer not to engage with you further on a one on one level for fear that the interaction will degrade unnecessarily. Keep well!
