Just make sure you never let her eat grapes or raisins they are highly toxic and will kill her the vet had to pump our dogs stomach because of it for a dog her size just two or three would be enough to kill her or cause organ failure

Being a previous dog trainer I always recommend people find out what motivates their dog, ie treats or attention, and use that to teach live saving commands like come and stay. That will keep you from a lot of potentially scary incidents in the future. As far as getting her energy out when she’s just at home and not going on adventures with you. Raya’s idea about a toy that will throw a ball is great.

I highly recommend getting her chipped if she is gonna roam on your land. Or maybe even some type of geo tag for her collar. In case she gets stuck somewhere when wandering.

If you don’t want her in the bed, think about getting a crate for the night time. She won’t like it at all at first, but after a few weeks she’ll learn that is her safe space and her bed. It’s also very comforting to know you know exactly where she is at night in case there is an emergency. Crate training your dog at night is a great way to provide structure and an area your dog feels super safe, and you know she isn’t getting into anything dangerous while you’re sleeping. Another suggestion is to get a track device on that collar asap. I know that Fi has a GPS collar that would work well for your remote location. You can also throw an airtag on the collar for a secondary measure. You’d be heartbroken if she ran away or someone scooped her, so better safe than sorry since you’ve bonded with her.

Definitely second both of these tips!! I couldn't manage to get my stray crate trained but god do I wish we had that sorted, it would've come in handy countless times, and like OP said, it's a safe space too!

100%. For some reason, some people seem to think crate training a dog is cruel. But the reality is as long as you do it properly and don't use the create a some form of punishment it actually becomes a safe space for them. Highly recommend it.

I Recommend a collar or a harness and not the chain simply because if she pulls too hard the chain could damage her trachea. They’re dangerous.

Also please do your research on what food is toxic for dogs. For example dogs can I have onions they can I have chocolate they cannot have avocado they cannot have grapes if give me the peanut butter Please make sure the peanut butter has no Zylit at all that’s toxic for dogs. There’s a lot of things that dogs cannot eat please do your research before giving them human food

If you are planning to travel with her, I highly recommend you kennel train her. It’s better to get her to feel comfortable in a kennel in her usual environment rather than wait until you travel. Our now five month old puppy (fifth dog we have had over the years) trained immediately. Keep some food in the kennel and get her to feel it’s her safe space. Our previous dog who recently passed away from old age loved her kennel so much she would put herself to bed in it every night.

Louis needed a dog for sure! Such a good dog dad! I’m so happy for y’all! Dogs are so amazing. They have these little paw washers that you put water in and then stick thier paws in to clean them, that might be good instead of wipes. Also recall training! Very important if you have her off leash. As someone with a leash aggressive dog if a dog like her were to run up to him while I have him on leash it wouldn’t end well for either of them. So having good recall to bring her back to you if needed is very important.

I adopted my stray at 1.5y old and here are the most important things I can think of! - crate training: make sure it's a safe space for her, eg when she is in her crate you leave her alone so she can have as much "me-time" as she needs - recall, especially as you like having her off-leash - consistency: routine is difficult but it helps them soooo much - you're absolutely right that setting boundaries/rules needs to happen NOW sooner rather than later, it will really pay off! - considering her history, try not to feed into any potential seperation anxiety. For example, my dog still suffers from it a bit and will go absolutely MENTAL when I come home from work, which can be kinda funny and cute with her jumping around and making lots of noises, but in reality she's releasing a LOT of stress at once and if I reward that with lots of attention immediately I am essentially reinforcing her anxiety. It's difficult to find the right balance but I have followed you guys for years and believe you will make amazing parents!! Whether canine or human :) enjoy your time with her, dogs are gorgeous beings we can learn a lot from ♥

I know everyone says not to sleep with your dog, but frankly I prefer having my dog in my bed, especially as she's gotten older and her health has declined. Being able to keep an eye on her and make sure she's always okay has been a really big deal. (And like a lot of dogs who lived primarily outdoors at first, she did NOT tolerate any attempt at crate training. Being confined like that gave her panic attacks and she would howl and injure herself trying to get out no matter how gradually we went or how rewarding we tried to make the experience, even with the help of professional trainers, so we stopped trying for her own safety and comfort. Dogs are individuals and you need to find what works for your specific pupper.) One thing I did with my rescue dog to teach her her new name, train recall (coming when called), and get her energy out was to play a game where she runs between two people. First person calls her (either just her name or "Name, come!") and then gives her a reward when she comes to them, then the other person does the same and rewards. You introduce the game by being just a few feet apart and using something really high-value and smelly (like pieces of hot dog) as the reward, and as soon as the dog gets it, you can increase the distance and encourage the dog to run back and forth between you. You can then switch to using her meals as the reward (so split the meal, half for each person to dole out, and only give a small portion as a reward for each lap until you run out of food) when feeding at morning and evening (most vets recommend feeding adult dogs twice a day). By increasing the running distance between each person and decreasing the portion of each reward as she gets used to it, you can stretch it out to like a five-minute game pretty quickly. You can even add obstacles or stairs along the route for an extra doggy workout, or start moving each person around between laps so that it becomes a building block for teaching your dog to "go find" a specific person. My dog is seventeen years old now and has bad joints, so we've had to ramp the game back down to an easier level and switch to a few treats instead of using her meals, but she still gets super excited to play it every day. :)
@Itsclassybird
@Itsclassybird 2 года назад
As a dog handler I'd highly suggest playing games that use her nose. Things like scattering treats for her to sniff out and find. 10 minutes of sniffing is the same as an hour long walk. Mental stimulation will always tire a puppy out more than physical activities ❣️

I keep a little tub outside the door to my camper with water that I wash her paws with before coming in. It gets them much cleaner than just wiping them. It is an inflatable “foot bath” so takes up no room or space when traveling. You could get a small plastic tub as well.

A tip that I have that I learned when I got my dog trained was that she still a puppy so if she gets a hold of her shoes or if she accidentally had an accident in the van or wherever you’re staying don’t scold her. It’s your fault the shoes are there not hers. Or if she actually goes pee simply just clean it up and show the appropriate place to go to the bathroom and when she uses the bathroom where you want to use the bathroom praise her with a treat or affection

from someone who has been bitten in the street 3 times and has daily problems with the fear for dogs. as much as i see you love her. please be mindfull and train her realy well from the first moments. so she will actually listen immediatley when you say something. also just a random tip.. please dont tell people who are afraid that "she doesnt do anything" i hear it ALL THE TIME. and it makes me feel so terrible. because first off all it does not take ANY of my fear away. i just dont want the dog anywhere near me. and also the 3 people who were walking their dog when they bit me also said the same thing right before it bit me. dogs are animals and they can just get startled by something unexpected and not even bit in anger or realy hurt someone but it was enough for my trauma. not to be negative at all or saying she would ever hurt anyone. just because you asked for tips

We just had to put our 15 year old Lab mix to sleep last week due to kidney failure and this video absolutely warmed my heart. He was just as spirited as your new pupper (won't say her name to keep it a surprise ;) ), especially when it came to treats and nature, even in his twilight years! Weirdly enough he loved all kinds of vegetables and fruits as treats so definitely google what types of veggies and fruits are safe for her to eat (his absolute favorites were weirdly Carrots, Celery, Blueberries and Broccoli stems- but everything given sparingly and with a balanced diet). Congrats you guys!

🐶🐶🐶 We have 3 extremely happy dogs so we want to give you a KEY 🔑 advice. The bast majority of dog owners make the mistake of thinking that you just have to physically stimulate your energetic dog and that’s ok BUT you also have to work on her mental health. How? Challenging her! For example; for Cali it’s gonna be way more tiring to find treats hidden all around the bus (when it’s rainy) than running for hours. Of course she needs to run a lot, but she needs to activate her nose in order to burn all her energy. So, a combination of physical activity with mental/nose challenges EVERY DAY is FUNDAMENTAL for achieving a true happy dog life. ACTIVATE HER NOSE and you guys are gonna have a super happy dog. Congrats you guys Cali is insanely beautiful. Much love from Barcelona ❤️❤️

I'm so happy you guys were able to adopt her! She seems like a wonderful dog, and seems strikingly similar to the dog Scout that you mentioned being the perfect dog in the video. I got a puppy back in January and this is the second puppy I have trained. My tips are to be consistent with any commands/training/behaviors you want her to learn! Taking some time each day to teach her something or to practice a learned trick is key. I'm not sure what products you are able to find in Costa Rica, but I like the Pet Botanicals training treats. They are small and perfect to bring out if you're on a walk and need to encourage her or praise her for a good behavior, but she already seems like a wonderful dog! I also recommend getting something like a Kong or food puzzle or lick mat to keep her distracted on a day where you need her inside. My dogs love getting a Kong with frozen peanut butter. Anyway, I can't wait to see more of your videos with her :)

Rewatching and commenting because I’ve learned so much since I first watched this. Thank you for adopting and doing your best for her! I’ve learned kibble is not species appropriate. Raw or gently cooked with real food is species appropriate and will help our fur babies thrive instead of just exist on what is essentially junk food. Our pup is on month six of real food & is doing great. It’s not as hard as I feared when I first started this journey; does requires some research (via holistic vets, pet nutritionists) & time to figure out how to make this work best for us. Still tweaking freezer organization & when I prep but it’s so empowering to know I’m giving her what is best for her & not risking toxicity.

Just get her, her own blanket and train her that it is HER SPOT… so no matter where you go or where you put that blanket, that is her spot…. So you just tell her “on your spot”… helps a lot for building boundaries, and also as travellers, it would be good for her to have her spot… so no matter where you are you can put that blanket THERE, and that is her spot! So even if you want her to cuddle,you bring her blanket to lay on her spot,next to you…

I’ve never heard of the DJI camera. It’s much smaller than a GoPro. Nice option.

Good luck with the sleeping arrangement. My border collie sleeps with me for 6 years and I wouldn't have it any other way. Whatever works for you and Cali

Get used to having a dirty house with a dog, or do a lot of cleaning xD Energy wise - plenty of exercise, opportunities to explore and sniff, teaching tricks, meeting people, brain games with food

Hi ive been a dog owner for over 10 years. If Cali is a bit skittish around trucks or has anxiety with loud noises i highly recommend cbd oil for dogs also calming sprays and a comforter like a blanket or even a soft dog jumper. My dog, Kappie, is petrified of fireworks and high pitch sounds. I know exactly what you mean with dirty paws. We live in Edinburgh Scotland and well it rains...A LOT...lol. i use micro towelled mits for drying my black lab theyre really handy come in packs of 4 also they dont take up much space they also dry very quickly. I do have 4 spare dog towels though for shower times. If the paws are extremely muddy then have a spray bottle of water to hand much easier to do a quick rinse. Hope this helps. Welcome to doghood all you need to give is some tlc and what you get back is just so rewarding but beware you get attached to these cuties just like people they become a huge part of your family xxx

As a former owner of pet supply stores and owner of many dogs, I ask you to please remove the chain choke and replace with a nylon collar. A chain is too heavy for your dog's neck and it can easily get caught many objects; such as trees, jagged rocks, items in your home and be harmful to Callie. I agree 100% with the comments on cage training.It's the only way to go. Consistency is the key. BTW my daughter's named her dog Callie also.

Dog safety training tips!! •Teach them to stop at doorways and wait for you to enter first. Or wait for your permission to enter/exit. •Body language while training is VERY important. Show your dog you are their protector. If they are uncomfortable with animal/person stand in between them and your dog to teach them you have their back and they are safe. •if you plan to hike a lot with them teaching them the "fireman carry" is good for any emergency situations if they get injured and you'll need to carry them long distances. It's just like human fireman carry but with their body across your shoulders with one leg on each side of your shoulder. •what I call the Lassie command. This is where you communicate with your dog asking them to show you what they want. Let them get your attention then stand up and go 🤷🏽‍♀️ show me🤷🏽‍♀️ The "what is it" gesture is important and patience. Let them see that you are confused but attentive to them. Then follow them to wherever they go. Pause and wait for them to figure out they are indeed taking you somewhere if needed. If they take a couple steps then you do the same. Reward them when they stop at an objective.

The most used sense of a dog is it’s nose. Incorporate that into play and she will be tiiiiiiired ;-) Also, dogs kind of need a job to be able to relax. If she seems really restless to you, it could be that she hasn’t found her „purpose“ yet. It can be as simple as: my job is to sit in this place. This will also build trust. Another really important thing and probably the hardest: don’t humanise her too much. Some dogs can get really anxious if you pet them too much and start biting. It seems like she really loves that kind of attention, so it may not even become an issue. Lastly, I just love how she came into your life! I hope everything works out great 😍

Please remember she is still very young. So don't take her on long walks, walks should be short, since her joints have not fully developed yet. So if she has too long and intense exercise now, chances will be bigger she develops osteoarthritis later in her life. And another tip: dogs need a LOT of sleep, at least 16 hours a day. Young dogs like her need even more, preferably 18 hours a day, very important to keep her happy and help her process all of the exciting but also the stressful experiences during each day. Anyway, enjoy your time with her! A dog is the best company one can wish for!

Look into a feeding puzzle for her! The mental stimulation will help with her energy levels and will provide entertainment to help keep her out of trouble. 😉 Best of luck!! She seems like a perfect fit for you both.

Being a dog owner, I would definitely recommend, getting a pawise pawcleaner, and a microfibre towel to help with her paws and when you bathe her. Also for her puppy energy some brain activity toys will definitely help her getting tired mentally aswell... You Will accumulate alot over time, because at some point she Will have figured them out. I use them for my girls alot (especially being chronically ill, it's hard to activate them sometimes) Also recommend figuring out which kind of shampoo is good for her coat, and fits your lifestyle.. I would recommend a harness for when you travel, and get one ahead of time so she can get used to it, and I would recommend a step in or Y style harness so they don't harm their chest and front legs/shoulders. That would be my recommendations.

Since she is food oriented use her kibble as training. For dirty paws get a Paw washer, yes it’s real and works GREAT!
