I saw this on my walk back to the office from lunch. It was a nice contrast to the perception everyone has of the NYPD in the area due to the Occupy Wall Street camp nearby.
Yeah, it can go either way.. but i do know what you mean. I had lesson's with a horse years ago, who's best bud seemed to be a cat. It was sweet, I'd find them many time's cuddled up in her stall. Whenever she saw the cat, her ears would pop up and she'd gently put her face down to have a visit with the kitty. 🐴🐱
Police horses are so well trained and stabile. It’s really impressive to see. I know they only select the right individuals and that they train them, but they are still flight animals

You don't know horses, do you? Police horses are NOT old! They are specially selected for their natural ability to maintain a calm demeanor in the chaotic city environment. All horses are interested in small critters, and this one is enjoying the chance to breathe in and learn about the hyper excitement that the French bulldog is displaying toward her.
Noooo, horses love their small animals! Cats, bunnies... They're so gentle with them, always makeing sure they don't step on them-even if a kitten is in their stall, playing right by their hoofs (which can look a little scary!) Some trotters have their own bunny living with them in their box! I's calming supposedly (having a little bunny around munching on hay), and it's company. Having a little bunny friend, amirite? There was even this one champion trotter who had his own little goat; it traveled with him and everything. SO adorable. :)
No... I think (obviously) that the little Frenchie's mind was -blown- haha. Best day ever! But horses will accept-and love-any small animal you send their way. It's the sweetest thing. I would see tiny kittens at the stable running around horses' hooves in their stalls-and be terrified for them!-but never once did the horses step on them; they were so gentle and careful.
The horse serves the Officer so dedicated , obeying and focused all the time , the horse deserved and needed a bit of a mental playful break and was thankfully allowed to do so. Keeps everybody in a motivated healthy mood , cuz it's not as easy as it looks. Their duty is demanding.
All I could think of was this little dog talking to this horse "Hey!HEY!! Giant dog! Leave your human and come play with me! We will play the chase and the tag and shall jump and run and be very merry!"
Here's the real conversation: Police Horse: "Hmm ... Purina Dog Chow ... Friskies Party Mix ... Central Park, Bathesda Fountain ... to much sugar ..." Dog: "... Grass? ,,,, GRASS?!"
I have no doubt if this adorable little dog and horse lived nearby each other, this little one would snuggle up and sleep with this horse every night! They would be best buddies with kisses and hugs all day long! Now that's a special friendship! Thank you!
An amazing encounter. Just as well the larger of the two didn't get as excited as the smaller one. Kudos to the NYPD and the amazing horses that they and the forces around the world have.
+Irene - I photograph a lot of weddings, and when I'm around midtown and run into cops, I've never, not even once, had a cop(s) say no to be in a photo with the wedding couple (this is mostly people from Europe doing a destination wedding so sth like that is fun!). But then again, Americans-or at least New Yorkers-looove them seeing a bride and groom around town!
Neither animal is stupid enough to mistake the other for one of its own. The scent is significantly different. Dogs stink of death and shit. Horses smell like grass.
That is the sweetest interaction I've seen in a long time. It was beautiful. The way the dog's owner simply let them free relate, is quite nice. Purely delightful.
Look at the fun, the curiosity and the invitation to play. Thats such a nice gesture of these two Animals. No complaining, no fight just having a good time together.
it's generally a fact of life that stables attract cats for many reasons and if the horses are used to the cats walking around on the dividing walls, as they do, I can see why a patient horse would find a small dog 'interesting'
Kudos to this mountie cop for her patience and relaxed attitude and not trying to control everything and pretend she's in charge, like a lot of cops do. Horses have that chill affect on people, apparently even on police officers.
The police horses in NYC ara amaaazing. Whenever I see one, I'm completely mesmerized. (OK, so I used to ride horses, 10 years, so I miss them, but they're the most amazing, divine creatures.) They're in tip top shape, muscular, well taken care of. And yes they're calm-walking down avenues in Manhattane without spooking, they gotta be! I just love them.

That was the cutest thing! Animals are beautiful and have a lot of love in their hearts for others of any species by nature (outside of predator-prey relationships, obviously, but even sometimes then).
I have no love for dogs but, This breed, French Bull I think, is the most adorable and beautiful dog ever. An associate of mine at work would bring his with him to work. The place would erupt. Everyone loved that little guy. Even me, with doggy-phobia Fine doggy!.
Actually very nice of that police officer to interact like that for as long as he did. Too bad more arent like that I think we might have better relationships with them. Either way, that was a very calm horse!

And to the ding dong who made a comment about the police officers looks and weight.....UMmmmm..maybe they are wearing bullet proof vests and thermals to keep warm..DUH!!! really. get a life. Yeah your right, horses can only take a load of like 230ish pounds and still maintain a healthy back if I'm not mistaken. That dude with all of his police gear is probably over that. Learned that from an episode of Nathan For You where they took a pretty damn obese guy and tied weather balloons to him to offset his weight so he could ride a horse around a little path lol. Hilarious, but also scientifically accurate! You don't have to be around horses your whole life to know about gravity, mass and weight and it's impactful downward force on whatever it's on top of.

As someone who used to look after and help train thoroughbred Race horses I can confirm that there is some very hot blooded flighty characters amongst them, others are just so docile that they become assistant officers to mounted police! They are almost bomb proof. Beautiful creatures
And I feel sorry for the dog as well. They are not human. Putting clothes on them will only cause them discomfort and chaining them.. It's almost sort of prison. That owner didn't even allow his dog to express properly.. 😢

bodyshott65 No they aren't, they're the cops who ride horses as part of riot control operations. Besides, even if they were, they have _horses_. I think these guys can manage to chase down a bag snatcher.
***** The maximum weight permissible for an NYPD Mounted Policemen is 200 lbs., so these chaps only look fat because of their bulletproof vests. Also, in case you haven't noticed, they don't need to be trim and muscular, since when on duty they are always on their steeds who are stronger than ten men.
Here's your answer: People who watch this type of sweet slice of life, then totally ignore it and instead find someone in it to criticize have such low self-esteem that the only way they can make themselves feel bigger is by tearing others down.

I introduced my Jack Russell pup to a horse at my other half’s work, I picked her up and they rubbed noses, the horse snorted and my little jr peed all down my front! Ahh, warm memories! 😂
