Whilst the fight isn't 100% realistic (it was unusual for duels where neither party wore armor to last even 20 seconds) the stances and the techniques used are still real, and they are using the swords competently. This proves that only a little exaggeration can get you really far.

One thing I really enjoy about this fight in particular is the subtle fact that both fighters know they could die. In most media, sword fights are typically conducted with both parties having no fear. In this, they frequently retreat, hesitate, or halt altogether when the situation becomes a gamble. Even when one is thrown onto the ground, the other is hesitant to rush in not because it's a bad idea, but because they fear death. Also, this film does a good job of showing how not all duels have to be fatal.

@@lucianlihaciu1916 not exactly. Depends on the people and situation. People dont go down easily with one stab or strike unless its fatal. Most duels tend to be first blood duels. A wound would easily get infected and you would be likely to die after a duel if not treated soon. Also there are no rules when engaging another person. You can use your hands and feet as weapons. Also the reason they shove eachother down is to get the enemy off balance and get them on the ground.
@justrobin8155

These guys are doing throws, falls, and rolls on a stone floor, and going at it with those swords like they actually want to hit each other, instead of just clang their blades. That shot where the guy gets the head cut looks quite real, and like it would have been dangerous to do even as choreography. You can see the belligerant fencer with the long hair start out enraged and reckless, then quickly see the rage dissolve into fear as he realises he's not dominating the fight. His opponent remains calm and measured throughout. Likewise the reckless fencer quickly exhausts himself while his opponent controls his energy. Finally, the more skilled fighter wins in hand-to-hand combat and ends up holding his reckless opponent at longpoint, but he's so assured of his superior skill that he tosses his enemy his weapon again, just to quickly disarm and defeat him again while sparing his life.

And you know, smart camera working and practical effects can make a dairly bad ejecution look very good. Best 1v1 fight scene I've seen in years. I love how this whole scene, with absolutely no dialogue, hints at an utterly epic story just out of camera shot. Don't blame Hollywood. It is just a place where various people gather to make movies. Since various people work there, various things can happen in movies. It's not like there is this one boss at Hollywood who controls and dictates films. Hell, there are many filmmakers that strive to have their films be realistic. What you CAN blame are the filmmakers who use this ideology. Blaming studios can also be acceptable as they have can have authority over a movie.

@cadethumann8605
@cadethumann8605 7 лет назад
brandon zhang I was referring to filmmakers other than ones working on swordplay (Drama or other genres and/or methods in conveying a genre such as bare-handed fights). My point was that you shouldn't blame filmmakers altogether nor should you blame a place that just helps provide resources for various filmmakers to make movies. Also, many filmmakers do not care for accuracy in terms of fight choreography. Reasons can vary such as that sometimes they want to express their imagination with their choteography, wanting to tell the story a certain way, or that they just want the fight scene to advance the story. Also, choreographing a fight scene is not easy. While I have no qualms pointing out innacuracies and/or problems, it does irritate me when people get all condescending and scoff at the hard work the filmmakers put into, such as them "bullshit". It's one thing to point out mistakes but to be mean about it? I honestly don't blame filmmakers not wanting to cooperate with these people.

To some extend i can understand why there are no such brilliant fights in hollywood movies. You cant expect an actor to have years of training like these people have. Of course they could use stuntmans, but you have to disguise them...maybe let them wear a helmet? No! Impossible! You know how much hollywood despises helmets on main characters, do you?^^

It's no Hollywood that despises helmets. Hell, Hollywood can't despise anything as it is just a place where various people gather. What can despise the helmets are the filmmakers working on the project.

Arthur Herbst helmets are a forbidden items for the main characters in Hollywood movies especially a big actors. LOL
@cadethumann8605
@cadethumann8605 7 лет назад
Croz Raven Actually, they are not. There are no rules that forbid you from doing anything in your story as Hollywood is just a place of gathering. Granted, it is true that filmmakers tend to prefer their protagonists to be helmetless as to show the characters' emotions. Just don't go blaming a place that has nothing to do with the issue other than helping filmmaking.

Croz Raven I'm sorry. I just couldn't tell if you were mocking Hollywood or just being playful. It just sometimes get annoyed when people treat a place like crap for having weird film decisions. It also irritates me when people disregard the many good things that came from Hollywood (good movies, many dreams coming true, gave people jobs, lots of profits made, etc.).

Maybe one day the almighty movies production companies will take into consideration to spend some of their humongous budgets in some guys like them and their expertise. Bravo

This is actually a lot better than any movie fighting scene regarding longswords... on second thought this might be the best fighting scene in general.

One detail I like about this fight that few mention is how as the second guy is getting more frustrated, he gives himself more of a disadvantage and made him ultimately lose the fight. While anger can be useful if used right (such as help motivate one), it can easily lead to recklessness due to lack of proper thinking in exchange for aggression.

Yeah! They established character very well with no dialogue. The angry bearded guy and the calm bald guy established themselves so well with their facial expressions, their moves, how they handled setbacks (or didnt').

This is hands down the best display I've seen yet - of what an actual sword fight might have looked like. Great job!

Central European swordplay & swordfighting of the era 1450-1650 was quite magnificent, beautifully intricate & deadly effective, just amazing to contemplate & behold (& any thoroughly trained, hardened & perfected practitioner in that fine & fancy art featured above could more than likely have given even the most skilled, seasoned & lethal Japanese Samurai swordsman a very good run for his money, a fierce fight that would have been evenly/near evenly matched, relatively speaking). What an incredible & superbly choreographed demonstration that those two gents gave. Outstanding!

We love you ... Greetings from Gladiatores ;-) This is how HEMA and swordfighting should look like. And a bit of scenic and theatrical is always good ;-) Thomas from Gladiatores Germany

This was bloody amazing! This is the kind of choreography I would love to see in films. It makes the scene much more intense and real and makes the combatants seem incredibly skilled without losing out on any other areas.

Some people say that this is exaggerated realism, but save the lack of circling and distancing, I can see almost all of these exchanges happening in one duel! It is not and exaggerated as people here say it is, just look closer.

So, this level of skill and ability is exactly what I looked like when I did sword fighting...in my own mind...with a broomstick handle...when I was 11...right before I hurt myself.

I like how technical they are. It's still made to look dramatic, but they showed binds, disengage, half swording, and grappling.
