My favorite song of the year. Been a massive Adrienne Lenker fan for a long time now, I think she's the best songwriter alive today. Big Thief is one of my favorite bands and the new album is really something special.
I found a video of her playing this solo acoustic and figured out the tuning and shapes. It's very rough and I can't really play it and sing it at all yet, I learned it about an hour ago.
The tuning is CGDGGG Capo 6th fret

picking pattern (thanks to Jaoa Barreira - with different fingers and the chorus pattern added): thumb on 6th string index on 4th string middle on 3rd string thumb on 5th string index on 4th string middle on 3rd string index on 4th string ring finger on 2nd string the pattern for the chorus looks like it's in 3/4 with a bar of 4/4 at the end. (123, 123) thumb on 6th string index on 4th string middle on 3rd string thumb on 5th string index on 4th string middle on 3rd string - (123, 123) thumb on 6th string index on 4th string middle on 3rd string thumb on 5th string index on 4th string middle on 3rd string - (1234) thumb on 4th string index on 3rd string middle on 2nd string index on 3rd string there are definitely more variations later in the chorus - if i work them out i'll update this, but i think that's enough to get us very close.

Toward the end of the chorus during "takin' me outta here..." -- try changing the first chord during that phrase to 779xxx instead of 778xxx. I think all three tones there are supposed to be major, and your minor 778xxx sounds funny. Listening close to the song, it's hard to tell -- but she definitely sings the major 3rd on "TAKin'' so there's that. This song is genius, and you are probably a genius as well for picking it apart. Absolutely right that Adrienne is among the best songwriters alive today. These incredibly creative and idiosyncratic tunings, chord patters, and chord progressions are just the tip of the iceberg. Thank you for posting this, I'm always looking forward to people puzzling out her wonderful songs.

I just checked back on your channel to see the montezuma tutorial again and what do I find but tutorials to two of my favorite songs of the year that had both stumped me. I’ve seen Big Thief TWICE already this year and this songs and cattails especially just blew me away (cattails is my favorite song of the year so far). Just gotta say thank you so much for these tutorials you’ve really made me so happy and I can’t wait to play them and share with my friends. Absolutely love these songs, but I love the fact that you're a vegan even more! Thank you for caring about animals, it makes me so happy whenever I find out someone is a vegan! Absolutely! I've often wanted to let you know somehow, so I'm glad to finally get through. And now that I think about it, it was way longer than 8 years. Thank you so much!! It's funny cause I'm a huge tallest man on earth-fan, and when I first started learning his songs all these years ago I watched your tutorials on love is all, wild hunt etc and it opened up this whole new world of finger picking and open tunings. And now you return with this song by another of my all time favourite band & artist, right when i was trying to figure it out myself.

Åsa Johnsen oh man I was obsessed when that album came out. It was so much fun trying to figure out the tunings and how he played them. What a fantastic album that was. I feel about Adrienne the way I felt about Kristian back then. Awesome stuff!

Fingerpicking pattern: thumb on the 6th string, thumb on the 4th string, thumb on the 3rd string, thumb on 5nd string, thumb on the 4th string, index finger on the 3rd string, thumb on the 4th string, middle finger on the 2nd string

Watching the Live at WFUV performance and tabbing it out. It seems like the fingerpicking pattern changes throughout the song, but I'm pretty sure the first chord is played like this: G |----------------------0----------| G |--------------0------------------| G |----------0----------------------| D |------8----------8------8------| G |----------7----------7------7--| C |--7----------7------------------| She's also playing with the capo on the 7th fret instead of the 6th like she does in the studio recording, but the tab seems to match up with both recordings.

Great tutorial, watched it once and I have a basic gist of how the song goes (though I may be lost in finger picking, no surprise). Quick note: in your description you write these two chords- 024xxx and 025xxx. Do you mean 042xxx and 052xxx? I wasn't sure if it was a typo or if I was playing it wrong.
