I was charmed speaking with Smiling Friends co-creators and stars Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel about how they came together to create the series, animation inspirations and plans for new projects at Wondercon 2024.
About Smiling Friends
Smiling Friends Inc. is a small company whose main purpose is to bring happiness and make people smile. The series follows the day-to-day lives and misadventures of its representatives, the lazy, cynical Charlie, and the cheerful, optimistic Pim, as they try to cheer up and comfort the troubled people who call their company's hotline. They receive seemingly simple requests but the jobs become more complicated than they seem, making it difficult to bring happiness to the world.

She’s a really good interviewer- not at all a slight to the other guy I saw, but it’s incredible how much better they all play this one off than the other interview from wondercon I’ve seen, where they both felt guarded and mostly sarcastic and avoidant. I fucking love mr. Zach ‘psychic pebbles’ Hadel, and Smiling Friends, but I also come off a fan of Mrs. Cherry Los Angeles.

Michael Cusack: "I'm kind of a nobody, really" Ok but Michael, I grew up watching your RU-vid stuff. Stuff like Ted and Yolo and the Gabe Newell cartoon made my friends and I laugh so much. Imagine a group of like 7 teens with not that much in common bonding over silly stuff that your mind came up with. That was joy. Thank you. I just realize Michael might not ever read this but whatever, everyone who can relate, give Mr. Cusack his flowers please.

Well he actually was inducted into the Dracula Society earlier this year, he hasn't gotten to the point where he can't day walk yet, but sunlight does cause him immense and crippling pain. He's very brave here.

This is really cool, the show is Adult Swim's biggest hit in recent years and you got an interview with the creators. You had some great questions too! Thank you for uploading this! On another note, it's really cool to see Zach and Michael on a rocket ride like this. They both put a tremendous amount of work into the stuff they uploaded over the years and now it's finally, really paying off. I just hope Zach will still have the time and energy to be a regular on Oneyplays, he's literally the only reason I ever watch that show.
