The sudden stop to the conversation while the waitress gives their water and then slight restart of it while she's still there so as to not fully be silent is so realistic.
Alan being completely silent until Pim says "it feels like you're all ganging up on me" just feels so relatable. Like, I've been in the middle of so many arguments between two people that I just stayed silent until one of them said something so dumb like that. And that frustrated tone in Alan's voice is so perfect.
@@Bruhtatochip742 it's probably because putting too long of an awkward silence in might have messed up the pacing of the bit as a whole. but then again I have no idea, I don't write scripts for a living.
I love the episode description: "Smiling Friends finally get to relax in a beautiful Brazilian beach town. Pim works on his novel, Charlie binges a load of torrent shows on his portable hard drive. Allan and Glep enjoy some long-awaited “chill out” time at the beach."
If I remember correctly, this was supposed to be the April Fool’s episode, but since the episode were premiered all at once they really couldn’t do that.
The tone of Mr. Boss' voice on the phone when he said he can't help was so anxiety inducing LOL The feeling of being in a bad situation and being told by your one lifeline there isn't anything they can or will do for you.
Legit been there and also in an airport. When I went back to Korea during Covid, in order to enter the country you had to give the customs a person in the country they could contact in case of a case or something. Which meant them calling the number you provide and confirming it before they let your proceed. Well my girlfriend was my contact but she was still asleep as it was 4am, and the only person who answered was my elderly uncle. He almost got the customs cursing at him and told them info that was contradictory. Luckily they let me through after an agonizing 30 minutes of trying to find someone who’d answer
the way the boss sounds on the phone is the most realistic voice acting I've ever heard in my life. It is terrifying just how realistic this whole scene is in terms of the way people speak.
When I was last at Disney World, we were leaving the park, passing a group of friends, when one of them asked "Wait, didnt you write down our parking spot?". This episode makes me think of them. I hope they made it out of Florida eventually.
It legitimately sounds like a normal conversation, like I know it's improve but it's not even just their voices it's how the characters move. The animation team is legendary for bringing everything together
I don't know how a phone call between these four goofy little creatures and a character named "Mr. Boss" can sound realer than any call I've ever had in real life.
@@Yipper64 I get that peopels voices sound different on pgones because their processed but generally people can subconsciously tell it's them because they can pick up on their manerisms.
I love how this episode, instead of being like a funny trip on the beaches of brazil, it's just an uncomfortable misunderstood in a airport, it's literally the best bait i've fallen in my life
@@makototv1035 never understood this argument, pim knew it was his job to book the tickets and hotel, he should have done it, simple as that. why are you guys acting like booking plane tickets and a hotel room is such backbreaking labour that pim has to get a hernia trying to do, when really its pressing a few buttons on your phone? its not that big of an ask
@@makototv1035because he would know when they’d arrive and set the hotels based on that. No communication needed between two different people, and easily done in a day. Plus if you have a good group everyone tends to ‘tip’ a little since you did everything.
@@Yoobster I feel exactly the same. Its just a normal conversation you would hear in an airport with animated characters slapped on top of it. Is it ironic? an inside joke? Surrealism? I fail to understand what is funny about this.
The funniest part for me was hearing the Boss talking naturally. He is so fucking chaotic in the rest of the show but here he is genuinely confused. People can be upset at this episode all they want but I'm glad Zach and Michael made one episode of this 💀
When the credits rolled and I realized the episode was over I cracked up. Smiling friends is nothing if not subversive and this episode definitely subverted my expectations
I swear I've heard the "you chose the worst time to go" tone of voice on the phone so many times. It's the perfect, realistic tone that says "you didn't screw up horribly, but you made some mistakes."
Charlie is so wholesome by the end wanting to give Pim a break for his mistake and trying to put a positive outlook on the group with the google doc idea. Felt so human!
Yeah. I mean, I get genuinely uncomfortable when they bicker so its kind of nice to see Alan having a similar reaction to me in that moment, like he's just looking at the menu trying to ignore the situation. And then they try to make it wholesome but its not sappy and it feels realistic.
It's insane how real this feels. I genuinely feel the embarrassment and other emotions in the air and I'm over here getting frustrated as well. Kudos to everyone working on the show
I know right? I'd be fucking furious if I were in the other's shoes to Pim fucking up our vacation, but I'd also be frustrated if I was Pim and how no one even asked me before we left what hotel I booked and than be shocked I didn't because I wasn't aware I was supposed to be booking it.
I kind of feel like you’re just… feeling like you’re the characters. It’s way easier to feel and relate to characters who arent people in the first place lmfao There’s nothing for you to base off but yourself
0:57 That little gap of tranquility changed Pim's "Let's make our boss to pay for an hotel." idea to "Let's ask our boss for an assistance." That's incredibly subtle and realistic creation of consensus, i love it.
i really love how their eyes don't just lock on whoever's speaking, their eyes wander naturally, most notably when pim says the group screwed up, rather than just him, everyone's eyes dart around to eachother, gauging reactions and laying blame. great stuff
yeah its the subtle character acting that makes animation really great sometimes. Like, its subtle, but less subtle than if you had actors do it. So it stands out but its more intentional.
I hope I’m not the only one that found it hilarious that before the argument got real bad they were interrupted by the waitress giving them their fries and they immediately calmed down, as to not make a scene in front of everyone else. That type of stuff is just too realistic whenever an argument breaks out in public
Dude yeah, and earlier in the ep when the scammer/mugger came up to them and asked for money, it legit gave me flashbacks of telling homeless weirdos to leave me alone, complete with even the way Charlie awkwardly laughs and says he thought the dude was gonna hit him afterwards, I've legit had that exact convo before dealing with shady people around my friends
Love how Pim was the first one to stay quiet before anybody else did because he saw the waitress walking by first while everyone else has their heads turned to him
The minor mistakes of "Hey boss, it's Pim here now" is what I value in acting. He knows your voice, you don't need to announce who you are, just talk. It's just something you do when you don't know someone all that well, and also overestimating how confusing it is talking to 4 people on the phone. One of my favorite movies is Grave of the Fireflies, and it's because the movie is filled with these moments of unnecessary information that make the situations feel naturally occuring. The scene in the beginning where the sister is asking for her doll while the brother is struggling to find it, not noticing his sister pointing directly at it since he's looking so hard elsewhere is one of those situations that has unnecessary hang-ups that add so much liveliness and believablility to the acting. It's not too hard to add either. When characters in movies never misspeak or have very direct, and especially dramatic, answers then it sucks me out of it super quickly. It just feels all orchestrated and contrived, and it usually spoils what happens because there's always a logical leap for what's next, because you know that any information given to you is pertinent to the plot, and isn't just details added for conversation between the characters.
Charlie mentioning he spoke with Glep about budgeting is so fucking funny. I love that this tiny green critter is a fully functioning adult who sits down to have discussions about budgeting for a holiday.
Mr. Boss' natural voice is pretty much the highlight of the episode for me. Just the way he sighs and slightly chuckles at how bad the situation is for the gang had me rolling. Also, loved the background going from day to sunset in real-time
It's the way he's the weirdest guy in the room until he's presented with something even more weird/uncomfortable than he is (Wall guy) then he suddenly becomes the most reasonable one.
It's worth mentioning that this isn't just a long gag, this was the entire final episode. Nothing wacky or crazy happens. It's just this for a whole episode. And that's how the show ends.
I love the fact that they made the boss’s audio him being on the phone instead of the usual ‘cut to character location’ with perfect audio. That phone distortion is just a lovely touch to an awesome episode.
Haha ikr. Mr boss almost said "don't even have a hotel" then quicky removed the "even" to not make it sound as judgemental haha. I doubt the VA was even thinking of that unless it was scripted but who can even tell
I know the joke is obvious at this point but I love how this kind of inadvertently relates to that one meme about “top 10 things to do in Brazil” and the only option is “leave”. Because that’s exactly what they do in the episode.
The boss on the phone was so incredibly realistic. I’ve never heard the tongue clicks and the “shoot!” Done in media before but it’s so spot on. “You picked the worst time to go.. yeah you picked the worst time to go” was so funny to me for some reason.
And then the pink guy shooting a "yeah we could figure it out by ourselves" then realized it was kinda rude so he quickly changed subject... that's 100% something that would happen in real life. Amazing script there!
I don't see what's crazy about him My guy got married, now owns some land with a neighbor who he argues with, gives gifts to his employees He is a nice guy
I swear to god this show isn't scripted, they just lock the VAs in a room and record them talking because the dialogue is just so insanely realistic lol. It flows so well, never heard dialogue this relatable in any show
Do you interact with many people IRL? Im serious. I dont get how mundane dialogue makes a show "great" or "funny". This show is like feminist stand up where you clap instead of laugh.
I love how you go into this episode expecting it to be the usual vacation episode of a cartoon where the characters get into wacky shenanigans and adventures but it turns out to be a complete subversion of that. Instead we get a hilariously realistic scenario of miscommunications between friends and the stresses of trying to book a hotel room, all animated in ONE shot for the entire 11+ minutes. This show is fucking brilliant.
I love the way they do this. This doesn't feel like a script. It feels so genuine and real that it feels like at any moment they themselves could make the decision to write a script for their own show.
If you just black out the screen and show this to someone blindy. I would 100% bet that they would think that it's just a group of people on a business trip arguing about money
And just have a bunch of A-lister stars only have a few voice lines too. Like have Scarlett Johansson hold the door for Charlie and/or Pim and say you're welcome
I love when Pim says “It seems like you guys are ganging up on me” Alan immediately butts in and starts arguing with Pim at the same time as Charlie lmfao
I love how this is the most normal interaction that they’ve had with Mr. Boss. It’s almost as if they just called the voice actor during his free time.
"hey marc we're not gonna tell you when, but sometime tomorrow we're gonna call you in-character as the smiling friends employees, and we need you to respond as mr. boss. we're not giving you the context now, just wait for the call"
Ironic but relatable, because I know when it feels like youre being ganged up on but youre not, and when someone says something like that and you cant just not comment because they arent seeing the situation wrong and you dont want to make them feel bad, but in joining in your kind of ironically add to the stress of the situation. Idk. Man this show hits a specific thing in the brain doesnt it though?
I especially love how he stops midway and closes his eyes before backing down like he realized what he was doing, it's just so real. The guys working on this show have such attention to detail, lmao
@@liamjm9278 that's the thing about telling a group of people that they're ganging up on you. Naturally they feel accused, and in a way it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
also that Pim already got the plane tickets, why would he also be the one to book the hotel. Also, not to pile up on him but the amount of times he screwed up in season 1 you think they wouldn't put him in charge of either task.
0:53 the argument derailing out of courtesy during an interruption because they're still in public giving everyone a moment to collect their thoughts and think of an ACTUAL plan in a shitty situation is so ridiculously realistic even down to one person having like 0% battery in their phone and using someone else's to make a group phone call lmfao
I can’t believe how realistic this scene is. Every single mannerism and bit of dialogue is something I can recall having been through thousands of times throughout my life, and seeing these cartoon characters going through the EXACT same conversations is so cool to see.
The phone call might be the best thing I have ever seen/listened to in my life. It's so realistic, like everyone has had an awkward phone call asking someone for help when they didn't want to, all just for that person to not help them at all. Brilliant.
and ur just like "thanks for picking up anyway...b y e". Like u think at first there's no harm in calling (which charlie says here) or u might regret not calling later, but afterward u just feel stupid
This is the most casual conversation I have ever seen in a cartoon, I swear the actors did a one take in the same room and actually called the voice actor while playing the characters, its really well done.
They definitely had a guideline for this conversation and just riffed for it, even getting the Boss's actor on the phone on mic to contribute. This is perfect.
the way charlie and glep side-eye each other at 1:52 after pim tries to shift the blame to the entire group kills me. the cherry on top is how subtle charlie's side-eye is animated.
@@Blad3sofWaRFrom context he was saying to not accuse him and to let him watch videos in peace instead of making a big deal out of paperclips being missing.
The details of the situation, the actual voice of someone in the phone call, the back and forward argument, the stress expression, the sound of silence being awkard when the waiter comes in, its fucking diamond (instead of sayin gold)
@@CoolOkay_ what is most funny to me is how defensive Pim is and his complete refusal to admit he did anything wrong. That was basically me in high school 😂
I love how the phone call wasn't used as a gag or for a punchline. It was like the most normal ass phone conversation i've seen in a cartoon and it makes it hilarious.
I love how Humanised these characters are. It's not just like, Pim is the happy nice one, Charlie is the cynical mean one, they have so many dimensions and layers to them, it's amazing. This show is just, done so well. Comedic wise and Story telling wise
I can't believe people hated this special, I love it when cartoon characters talk like real people. Reminds me of the Godfather argument scene from _Family Guy_
bro this is literally me and my friends, i would definitely accidentally forget something crucial and get upset and feel like they’re ganging up on me or something out of embarrassment. also the whole coming up with bad ideas and getting annoyed at people shooting them down is me too. this was so humbling for me to watch from an outsiders perspective.
That's what makes it so hard for me to watch because I also see myself in Pim during this episode so it gives me such a strong secondhand embarrassment 😭
@@zarkflappysheep holy shit i cant believe its you. ive been watching your stuff for a while and i have 2 questions: any advice for an aspiring animator? and will you ever make a big boys 3?
Im really in love how realistic those conversations always are in this show they dont take turns where they wait for other person to stop talking and stuff love how the boss is like "hmmm *lipsmack* *deep inhale and exhale* like this is something you hear in real life while talking and i know it might not be a amazing over the top detail but i really like it
Everything to the dialogue, the situation, charlie and pim talking over each other, and boss' distorted voice over the phone is so fucking relatable and accurate.
