+Sir Sebastian I loved when they featured the "when I was done dieing" music video where they had multiple animators work on different parts of the song. now its one of my favorite tracks. if there is one thing adult swim has always done right, its the music.
same here man,my parent cut cable so I have no access to things like [as] but atleast they arent like cn where you have to pay to watch episodes of shows on there website so maybe live is in the future?
the adult swim website live streams pretty much everything they've ever made for free. They also stream exactly what their showing on tv online if you have a cable provider.
@@TheDashingdoughnut Really? Not even when newgrounds profited off of the sinking ship that is Tumblr by reminding everyone that newgrounds allows NSFW?
I long for the nights of adolescent rebellion. when I'd pretend to be asleep until I couldn't hear any other noise in my apartment. and turn the tv on whilst simultaneously turning the volume down to near mute levels. and I'd digest this programming that I couldn't quite put my finger on, but I knew I liked it and I knew I wanted more. I started watching adult swim I wouldn't even tell anyone about it, it's like it was just for me.
>it's like it was just for me. Truly a guilty pleasure. I enjoyed that some of the content was engaging too, I had to think about the joke as a child rather than an "oopsie" cartoon you just observe.
Same here man, but I especially remember the times where my cousins would visit and we'd try to stay awake and wait for everyone else to fall asleep. Then after we made sure, we would tip-tor as quietly as we could and go to the living to watch adult swim, especially family guy. But eventually we would get caught lol.
I recall being a little kid and getting nervous when the "adult swim" logo came on in the evening because it creeped me out...but watching it anyway, of course.
Of all the shows that had the potential to withstand the test of time, only Aqua Teen Hunger force manages to hang in there. It's like the spongebob of Adult Swim
Anyone remember Korgoth Of Barbaria? They never picked up the series because they felt it's budget would've been too high. But everyone could tell just from it's test pilot that it would've been one of the greatest Adult Swim shows ever produced. It's a shame that Adult Swim never took a chance with that one, it likely would've paid for itself in the ratings.
robot chicken has had like 7 or 8 seasons. They are still going. Rick and Morty will probably keep going for a while. ATHF ended not too long ago if I remember correctly.
I think adult swim and toonami made me tolerate of other things like music shows and ideas...they basically made me not judge a book by its cover...I appreciate that...their very welcoming unlike cn disney abc nick fox pbs..theres a level of acceptance involved with the people making it and less bias...they will run any crap they want...
Song at 0:07 - Eris Starkey Song at 4:40 - Flying Lotus - Massage Situation Song at 7:00 - Richie Branson - Bring Back Toonami Song at 7:50 (Outro) - Tyler The Creator - Hey You Couldn't figure out the tune that appears throughout the video.
7:24 "AdultSwim cancelled your favorite show? Good. The important part is it gave you a favorite show." I think this should be told to like 90% of the [AS] fanbase, at least the one that's on facebook, seeing all the cancerous comments like "Bring back" and " sucks, cancel it!". Great editing on the video btw, enjoyed it!
People bitch so much, but never support TV shows when it's on air. The reason shit gets cancelled cuz not enough watched ($) .pirating ur fave show ain't helping no one
definitely can relate, adult swim showed up when I was my most impressionable, it taught me alot about what creativity means and how wonderful the weird can be
+M3NO451 yeah man it's a childhood feeling that's still around and that gets to me adult swim never changed never adapted to any new demographic they never strayed from what they were from the start
I remember being like 7 years old and staying up all night just to watch cowboy beebop. I'd watch the halls to make sure my parents were asleep, fuckin put blankets at the foot of my door to hide the light from the Tv. The memories...
same for me but with family guy, i basically turned into metal gear solid, via using as little brightness as posiibble, faking sleep, turning off every phone in the house, and sneaking around
The guys at William’s Street are CN’s secret weapon. They first gave us Space Ghost: Coast to Coast; then they gave us Toonami; then they gave us [adult swim]. William’s Street is probably one of the most important production companies in the history of tv.
Thats because they dont have freedom of speech. Its why america is where asian college students go to learn creativity, because they are too into math efficiency. Freedom of expression births art.
dude id watch adult swim reruns any day, the way they scheduled the shows with the messages and bumps in between was so dope. You weren't just watching a show, it was like watching a movie.
nerdwriter is nice but the kaptains videos are much more refined building up on a extremly personal view and then exploring the deeper truth behind that view/preference this also expresses itself in how the videos are done there is so much attention to detail there is so much work put into them nerdwriters videos are pretty simple in terms of production that's not to say that I don't like nerdwriter videos or I don't see the connection here I just think kaptainkristian is a real undisovered gem while nerdwriters content is good but maybe a bit overhyped I quite enjoy Film-Drunk Love for video essays about film (everyframeapainting is also good although I don't like the newer ones much) and then I completely love you suck at cooking and casually explained both hilarious
Instead of typing a long-ass paragraph about the amount of nostalgia I got, I'm just gonna say that Adult Swim has a special place in my heart. I really, really love that channel.
Axolotl de la Animacion Came here to comment this. They deserve so much more attention. On a related note, met Jackson Publick recently at SFSketchfest, and he's a fan of Lost, though he hated the ending (I hold a different opinion), and he also loves Battlestar Galactica. Super-cool guy.
@@AxolotldelaAnimacion perhaps on HBO Max. But sadly the seeds of discord have been sown with Adult Swim's new president. This has his fingerprints all over it.
Shout out to the shows not shown here!! Wolfs rain, Big O, Samurai Champloo, and Inuyasha. Because those shows helped me want to become an animator today! :3
I used to run a Home Movies fansite back in the day, and this video was a wonderful bit of nostalgia and good insight into what made AS so fun. Particularly back in the old days when 11 PM on Sunday was a 3-hour block that most people didn't know about and even fewer understood, it was basically the highlight of my week. Great job!
+Joe Berg Shoutout to Squigglevision and the pool bumps. "No eating in the pool. What is that, Pimento cheese? Sir, no eating in the pool." Space Ghost, ATHF, The Brak Show, Harvey Birdman, Home Movies, Sealab 2021, & Cowboy Bobop every Sunday night for six months.
Oh man.. The feels.. I remember watching Space Ghost Coast to Coast in 1999 as an 11 year old.. It blew my mind with it's style and humor.. Then Adult Swim premiered with the "No Diving in the Pool" bumpers with the guy on the megaphone.. Oooooooh man.. Thanks for the nostalgia.. So happy with what that programming block has become, even to this day. I don't have to like all the programming to know they consistently bring the ball to the game by show casing new art styles. Thanks, Cartoon Network.
I remember seeing the premiere of Adult Swim talking with my friend on Aol Instant Messenger just talking about how crazy these shows were and have been watching ever since. I may not like every show, but I admire Adult Swim's sincerity and willingness to throw anything against the wall to see what sticks.
I've been a fan of your videos since you started and I must say this is easily your best video. The production, the graphics, and your narrative are all on point. I can tell how much this network meant to you and for someone like me who grew up just shy of AS's heyday, it's really inspiring to see the influence it had - and still has - on creatives everywhere.
Man, I have to say, your channel is quickly becoming some of the best content on RU-vid in my opinion. Between this and your Superman video you can tell you really care about the topic at hand and it's awesome. Dope to see concise well written videos like this. Super interesting, keep it up man!
3:40 you nailed it there. AS wasn't just a channel that had weird shows. The entire block was like one big variety show, and the host would crack jokes through the bumps and played some of that AMAZING underground music. I remember as a kid trying to get my parents and friends into it (they liked South Park and the Simpsons so I figured they'd like AS) but they always said it was just too weird or on too late. But I grew up on that shit, and its molded much of my sense of humor. AS was like an underground night/comedy club that only a few knew about or could get in. It had a pirate radio station feel to it. And overall, its just incredible (although today I think it lacks some of that old school aesthetic )
"Unedited Footage of a Bear" and "Too Many Cooks" are two of the darkest things I've ever watched on AS and I can only thank them for feeding my nightmare fuel hungry brain!
I've been trying to enjoy the little things in life again and idk why but this video makes me so happy for some reason, I think it's just listening to you talk about my childhood cartoons or maybe it could be the sound of your introduction to each of your videos, to me it just sounds so soothing and comforting. Please don't ever take this video down, you don't even know how much this video means to me
I loved watching Home Movies and space ghost every night.Adult Swim is my shit. And I wish they would bring back all the Old people and pool clips in between shows again that shit is so Nostalgic for me.
adult swim, for me, is the epitome of what television should be. when the conversation of tv being outdated thanks to things like netflix and hulu comes up, i generally agree, but that's only because no other channel does tv right. the way adult swim is run is something that can really only be done on tv and i think that's beautiful.
I remember always trying to sneak in the tv room and watch adult swim when I was younger. It was like such a treat for me, and family guy gave me the most entertainment.
I grew up with Space Ghost and Adult Swim from their beginning. When I saw this video come up in my feed and i thought "hmph! what could I possibly hear about Adult Swim that I don't already know" .... and I was pleasantly surprised to be immediately bombarded with great new information. Well Done! Thanks for making this!
Come back! I dig your analysis and video essays on stuff you grew up with because its my era. Your editing and music selection is everything man. Missin it. Hope to see more content soon.
I love the Adult Swim Smalls They introduced me to many great relatively small artist like Jack Stauber, Alan Resnick and Vewn The same with Off The Air
Metalocalypse still needs to at least finish the story. Even if it were another hour long bit, that'd be great. But yeah, been watching Adult Swim programming since I was ten, when it first appeared late night on Adult Swim. It's been a great ride so far. At times however, fucking weird man.
They seem to still saved cancelled cartoons such as Tuca and Bertie, A Netflix Original series! Now that’s respectable, and from what I’ve seen on my occasions of seeing this fascinating channel they have continued to have Toonami be the block for more mature anime and action-oriented cartoons! And what they shown with Genndy Tartokvsky’s Samurai Jack Season 5 and his new series Primal, it just helps further show their diversity in their content!
And now they're expanding their reach to young adults with an extra hour of programming and programs like Unicorn: Warriors Eternal (another Tartakovsky production) and the DC series My Adventures with Superman.
I'm SO glad Kaptainkristian is getting so much more recognition now - I consider him to EASILY be one of the top 10 most talented content creators on RU-vid. I've been watching his stuff ever since his debut video about the oldschool Superman shorts, and I subscribed to him immediately. :) I always look forward to his videos and whenever one comes out I literally drop whatever else I'm doing to watch it.
+kaptainkristian You're content is absolutely perfect. Quality editing, superb writing, and you never fail to explain and translate the distinctly different nature of the material you cover. And on top of that...Tyler the Creator AND The Gorillaz holy shit nice taste.
I'm not going to sugar coat here, the production value of this video blew my mind! I swear I thought it was produced by adult swim themselves, that's how good it was. If you keep this up you're going to you're going to get a shit-ton of a subscribers, I subscribed because I look forward to more of your videos and seeing you grow.
[as] was a big part of my childhood here in Brazil. It launched in 2005 and used to start around 11pm in CN if I remember correctly. And I would just be awake to watch all these spectacular fun cartoons without my parents knowing. I remember that it felt different than anything I've ever seen... And through it, I discovered cartoons, series and animes that I still love to this day. Brazil is well known for our really good voice acting. People around here are really passionate about the characters and its voices. And [as] gave the actors here complete freedom to create and adapt the toons to our culture. It was magical, there's even videos of the actors remembering how fun it was to do those voices... But of course, it didn't last long. Some politician here thought that it was not "politically correct" and in 2008 they demanded that CN stopped with the Adult Swim programming. And so it was done...
RTJ being friends with Adult Swim, as well as them making a Live Stream of their 4th album for young people to Vote and eat Ice Cream, is amazing and shows that they can do Music Video content what MTV doesn't. Amazing. Also, I love Space Ghost C2C, Robot Chicken, Rick & Morty, Aqua Team, and some experimental horror shorts on the block.
So many memories...I remember the very first night adult swim aired. I used to stay up watching the Chuck Jones cartoon specials and the experimental cartoons (I am Weasl, the Kids Next door first ever promo, the boy and the chimp, whatever happened to robot jones's first EVER airing as special programming) and then one night, everyrhing changed. Adult Swim came.
Damn, dude, your videos are incredibly well put together. Your insight into the history and creation of everything you've covered as well as your unique editing and concise commentary is just wonderful to watch.
I just wanna say that this channel is truly amazing. Keep up the good work. Out of everything on youtube you've come from nowhere and become my favorite channel
I'm really not a crier, but I've watched this video about once a year for the past 6 years, and event time I do I tear up. This video, more than any other ones I've watched made my feeling known, and in such a succinct manner. I feel bad for having a fucking video about a giant TV network shake me up so much, but [AS] has done so much for so many people, and I can't imagine how much bleaker our world would be without them.
Your presentation of this video as well as your heart felt dialogue really touched me bro, you brought me down memory lane with my equal love for adult swim man. just thanks for making this
