This lesson is about using salt dough and the variety of techno that you can use in building knowledge in ceramics and pottery.
Adding to the changes that you have when creating outside of the classroom. This week I am working on adding to the abilities of my students by creating more advance sculptures using salt dough.

Do you have any videos or recommendations about advanced uses of salt dough in the direction of sculptures or really professional looking bowls/trays? Most of the time when I search for salt dough videos on youtube I get the same old flat ornament stuff, foot prints or lumpy examples of candle holders. Most of it is understandably geared towards younger children, and isn't really concerned with smooth and higher quality results. I've been improvising on my own so far. I used salt dough for the first time last year by putting salt dough onto glass bowls to make jackolanterns. Looked amazing for a few months and then started cracking. This year I put salt dough around a ball of aluminium foil and made jackolanterns again, baked until half hard, removed the foil on the inside, then baked further. They look amazing and I hope they will survive longer. I would love to see people on youtube who are salt dough professionals because I have a lot to learn.

This sounds amazing and I would like to know more too. The issue is that the salt dough is difficult to make larger items out of. You might want to look into sculpty-clay or a poly foam that is covered after to make more detailed items. I’ll add this to my test ideas, so stay tuned. ✌🏻🤙🏻👍🏻

@@TrifireStudios I had three jackolanterns last year, made by covering glass bowls in a sheet of salt dough. The sizes were 8cm (3.15 inch), 10cm (3.94 inch) and 13.5cm (5.31 inch) in height. The salt dough was between 0.5cm (0.2 inch) and 0.8cm (0.31 inch) thick. I thought that they cracked because salt dough shrinks and expands according to the humidity in the air, of course the glass remains the same size. And I live in an apartment where the humidity can change drastically. So I hoped that making a jackolantern by covering a foil ball with salt dough, and then removing the foil ball in the middle of the hardening process would increase my chances of longer lasting jackolanterns. I've made two this way a few weeks ago. The smaller one is 9cm (3.54 inch) tall, and the larger one is 11cm (4.33 inch) tall. The thickness of the salt dough is between 1cm (0.4 inch) and 1.5cm (0.6 inch) thick for the smaller one, and between 1.25 (0.5 inch) and 1.75cm (0.7 inch) for the bigger one. I've seen some people make "fairy houses" out of salt dough although I haven't watched the videos yet. I'm really curious about the limits of salt dough. Even if I do try other clays/doughs I will keep experimenting with salt dough just because it's a cheap and easily accessible material. Do you mean sculpy clay or is sculpty something different? Using poly foam as a base/armature for a different material like sculpy, is that what you mean?

Thanks for the details. I’m working on a few recipes. The Sculpty Polymer clay was what I was talking about. You can get it in Amazon and it bakes in a normal oven to finish. Good luck 👍🏻, keep me posted.

@@TrifireStudios Only time will tell if the salt dough jackolanterns last. But I will keep trying to make everything out of salt dough that is usually made out of other clays/doughs as long as I can edit the technique to include removing the base/armature halfway through the hardening process. It's so cheap it's worth trying. Thanks for the full name of the product you recommended, I'm going to take a look. I will keep you posted.

Do the kids take the flowers or pot off of the cardboard or is the cardboard a part of the finished piece?

I’m having them leave it on the board to support the build. You can have them decorate that for an additional grading item too. If the piece can support the weight then you can remove it but use discretion.
