In this video, we focus on the strategy of creating a beautiful acoustic guitar with a French-Polish finish. French-Polish looks good and is easy to repair should your acoustic guitar become damaged.
In (step 1) we pay careful attention to the prep work for this acoustic guitar body using Starbond Glue. This involves checking the binding and using our Starbond Glue to fill any tiny gaps with sawdust and glue.
Next, use a sanding block and some 220 grit sandpaper to make the acoustic guitar binding smooth and level. Getting this level may require more than 1 application. Take your time here because a beautiful acoustic guitar finish will depend upon how well you repaired any gaps.
A beautiful acoustic guitar is a satisfying result when french-polish is applied well and given time to cure.
Taking your time here will make for a very good-looking guitar. It won't sound any better but it will sure look a lot better.

I thought of you this week after reading a tweet from my son regarding tea. He is visiting his very posh British in-laws outside of London and commented how he gets in awkward situations being an American regarding tea drinking. I had a British co-worker and, at the time I was getting more interested in drinking tea. I asked if he liked PG Tips and he was delighted! He had grown up drinking their tea! I told him it made fantastic iced tea and he very nearly became physically violent with me! Hahaha! I'm glad you're not quite so committed to tea as he was.

I don't get violent but I sure do need my tea. It's a nice drink that doesn't leave any after taste like coffee which is one of the attractions for me. The other is the flavour of tea can vary with the particular brand and tea. A Yorkshire decaf tea will taste entirely different from an earl grey tea which I don't really like all that much. But everyone is different.

Every video I learn something new! When you first started I thought you were going to insert a light inside the guitar and the light would stream through the gaps!! 😂😂😂~Cara

Be careful with that rotary sander. I ended up tearing out some purfling rings on a rosette. I find that I prefer using a scraper as it leaves a cleaner cut and makes less mess. That being said, I do recognize that the reason for sanding here is to create a filler.

Neil you are so correct. I feel like you are here in my shop shadowing me and looking at what I've been doing well and not doing well. The current guitar that I am working on I sanded part of the rosette too much and got a bit of the backing showing through as a bleed and it is a blue color. It actually looks quite good and so I kept it instead of trying to take out the rosette and put in another one. However, how do I used a scraper that would've never happened. That's a great tip. Thank you for that. I have a tea with MONTY video going up on Wednesday at 11. It's the longest video that I've ever done. I can't help but wonder if anybody will even watch it to the end. I suppose I can only hope. There are a couple of very interesting questions there. I'll be very interested to see the response from individuals.

Yes, I have sanded through two rosettes. I fixed one by modifying a Dremel circle cutter. I cut two lengths of a dowel, drilled a hole in the of each, put one on the pivot pin and used the other section of to dowel as well as a wood screw and rubber/metal washers to make an adjustable guide arm. I should probably rethink the screw and use a threaded dowel and a wingnut. The idea is to have the dowels wedge against the rim of the soundhole. The neoprene washer dampens the vibration to keep the screw from coming loose. I also use one on the center pivot adjustment screw. If you’ve ever used the Stewmac Gramil tool it functions similarly. It’s a work in progress though because the dowels don’t exactly glide against the rim of the sound hole so you have to work slowly.
