I think in the end Drongo was a bit clumsy explaining the effects of lancesters square law and small advantages snowballing.

I'd like to apply for a PhD position in the topic of Byzantine Base building. If that topic is too broad or complicated I would also focus on smaller section, e.g. Base building up to minute 5 or when dealing with early aggression.

Horseman/longbow comp does work very well too imo. You get 5 LB to snipe spears and your horsemen can kill enemy archers or harass/kill villagers. Triumph ability makes them trade very well vs MAA too once backed up by the longbow. Very micro intensive though

Great guide, who could have built the the cistern a little more at the north east to get bonus in all of your wood line, no?

I really like cataphracts and landsknects combo. Probably more than keshiks.. cataphracts give bonus dmg on who they trample. Then you mop up with landsknects and bees.

Hey Drongo, I've been watching A LOT of byzantine content and I find the Grand Winery and the Cistern landmarks suit my playstyle, I'm wondering if that's a good combo or a recipe for disaster

Not the biggest fan of cistern placement here. Maximizing the 'inspiring' radius seems more efficient to me than aligning for minimzing aqueduct costs. 1st cistern could have covered woodline additionally to berries, sheep and gold, 2nd cistern closer to woodline and stone (alignment could have worked in addition to that)

Keshik/light horseman and scouts with the siege damage buff, might be good

Could you make an empire wars version where which one should be your priority when it comes to amassing troops?

I’m not sure but I think I heard you say that Wam and PuppyPaw should avoid this civ because of the upgrade complexity.

You need math, specifically geometry specifically topology for spatial reasoning/calculation of cistern.

I don't get the criticism of the grand winery. If instead of making 10.000 oil in a match you make 15.000 (or 16.000 if the game counts resources with comma values) then it's quite a lot. Of course it's better the longer the game goes on but +60% of anything is nothing to sleep on.

It's whack that berry bushes give more olive oil than olive groves

Love units but I feel that this civs always have problems with eco...lack of food or gold or wood especially early on the FFA where it isn't easy to find good spot.

aqueducts can connect from any tile.. no need to stick to a grid

If that was stone instead of gold would you have gone for the stone instead?

Do FU Imperial Guard beat FU Cataphract?

While I don't disagree with you on the grove benefits of the winery, I think the fact that its a monastary is being slept on. What about selling the oil you get from the berries for a fast castle? Now you already have a monastary AND it gives oil instead of gold. Oil is much harder to scale because of the low returns on olive groves, but you want it for late game siege. 240olive oil/min sounds busted to me.

Mate could you find out if you get olive oil when you trade?

Think he was a little harsh on the Winery. Hippodrome is absolutey strong but there are assumptions with it. First you have a cavalry comp. Being predictable makes its easy for your opponent to adjust and counter your opening and if at any point you need to transition to infantry it stops giving value. Winery is less but more steady value in addition more mercs mean more acces to flexibility which is pretty strong. In addition since Winery allows you to make more gold units without gold your gold will go farther giving you much more value in the late game. Hippodrome seems good to counter booming or against a civ you know wants to make archers (English/China/Abbasid). Winery seems better when you can't secure early map control or if you want to fast castle.

I am stunned that people misunderstand the grand winery so much. Why on earth would you think it increased conversion rate? Literally every increase in gather rate in the game works the same way, by increasing base gather rate by the stated amount. If it increased the conversion ratio, it would obviously state something to that affect. Also going "look it 3 instead of two the difference is like nothing" is really disingenuous... The difference is exactly 60%, which is not nothing. 3.2 instead of 2, at every tick. I understand the other landmark is better, but to act like it does nothing is quite a low level analysis.

why go archers, there is nothing unique about them. just go longbowmen
