a bit too harsh with the review. i think this is amazing rogue-like for 1982. you can really see a jump in videogames evolution in this game. e.g. seeing devs trying to put as much into the game as they could with the early sound design (which really built up suspense) and getting as many sprites onto the screen as they possibly could (dumping a UI and putting in sounds for number of arrows left) the colors are also very complex on the main screen, so i can forgive the three dots. even the animation of the archer is great IMO. roguelikes of the time just had a non-animated icon for your character. The bouncing arrows off the walls back into your character is such an OFF THE WALL mechanic I wonder if it were a bug in the programming that the devs left in as a feature. If anything, this game is an evolution of Adventure for atari 2600, that led to zelda, which i believe is the standard adventure game.
I disagree with a lot of this. I don't think it's fair to compare this game to rogue and roguelikes just because it has randomly generated dungeons. This is still very much an adventure game and follows most of the tropes of the time for that genre. It has much more in common with Castle Wolfenstein or even Pitfall! than it does a game like Hack. In the scheme of adventure games, this game would likely be forgotten if it was not for its name. There are just better games in 1982.
Wait, does this game have Etch-A-Sketch controls? edit: I looked up the manual, and no it does not. Apparently the "disc" on an Intellivision remote functions like a joystick or d-pad. TIL!
