As a DJ for 35 years, including mobile and club DJing, radio, studio work, competitions and touring, I've observed my share of interesting things among people who just start out learning this art. But the most noteworthy is how difficult it is to attain proficiency in mixing two songs of varying speeds by ear.
In my #djskillsandstyles classroom It doesn't take long before those who can mix naturally separate themselves from those who can't in the initial building block stages. It's been my experience that when mixing comes natural, you pick it up within minutes. Others can take up to weeks or months to learn. I'm no Neuroscientist or master yogi but I do believe acquiring the proper mental and physical grasp of mixing revolves around your ability to quiet the mind and find your center. Only then will you be able to multitask without getting so overwhelmed that you can't differentiate the speeds of two songs.
If you struggle with juggling the listening aspect of mixing with the mechanical part, breaking down the process of merging two songs into incremental steps might work best for you. But those who are capable of balancing their sense of touch, site and hearing should definitely try the "Rob Swift method". It's faster and more efficient!
