We take a look at the Diabolical-rated puzzle from The Daily Telegraph on 26 October 2018. An unusual Sudoku in the sense that you could reach the endgame with very little effort so we look at a variety of techniques (Y-wings, W-wings) that can crack it from there.

You’ve shown an additional caveat to thebY wing I never thought of. Always looked for intersections but didn’t consider eliminating one from the same box if they are close proximity. Never heard of a W wing. Thanks for that.

Thanks for that "W" thing! That's definitely a new one on me.

Never heard of a W-wing before... been trying to work something out like it on my own when doing puzzles lately. Thank you for posting this! =)

There are interconnecting y-wings at 5:00. You noticed the y-wing on r2c1, r2c6, r9c1 and the y-wing on r2c5, r9c4, r8c5, but made no mention of the y-wing on r2c2, r2c5, r8c2. And the y-wing on r2c5, r9c4, r8c5 actually shares two cells with yet another y-wing on r1c4, r2c5, r8c5. This puzzle absolutely was filled with y-wings.

Great explanation. Ive always enjoyed doing Y wings they are so simple for me. The W wing on the other hand i always fail at. In reality it should be easier!!

I definitely appreciate the proper steps that you take to explain the logic behind the tactics. It's what separates you from the other, straightforward videos. The "tactics" I saw were almost useless until I knew what to look for. I've been using this video as reference when stuck like this. Thank you very much!

That's interesting. I know W wing as something slightly different. The version I learnt (from an app) starts the same, in as much as you have the same pair of candidates in 2 different rows and 2 different blocks, but in the 3rd block, one of the candidates is restricted to the same 2 rows. For example, from the video, you had a 29 pair in block 1 on row 3, and a 29 pair in block 2 on row 2. If, for example, you imagine block 3 still had a bunch of candidate 2s, but they were also restricted to rows 2 and 3, you'd have a w-wing as I know it. You would know that you couldn't have a 2 in both those 29 pairs. At least one of the pairs would HAVE to be a 9, so any square that could _'see'_ both pairs, could *not* be a 9 and can be eliminated. It doesn't eliminate squat in the video example, and not just because block 3 doesn't qualify, but that's the logic behind the version I know of. The 'annoying' level on the app 'Sudoku Joy' has this kind of w-wing almost every time, so it'a immensely useful for me....

Hello, thank you for the videos! I had a question regarding the set up of the first Y-wing: In the center cell of the top-center box where there is a (2, 9), why was 3 eliminated as an option? If 3 is a possible solution, would the following Y-wing still work? Thank you again!

3 was eliminated there because the first box must contain a 3 in its middle row, given the 3 in r5c3 and the 3 in r3c8 look at all other cells in that box that could possibly contain the 3. If that cell could possibly contain a 3, it would not form a valid y-wing.

I enjoy your videos immensely. Can I make the polite suggestion that you figure out a way to improve the quality of your audio though?

I wish I understood more about the technical aspects of this! On my pc the playback sound quality seems good and we're both using decent webcams to record. I've just gone through all the audio settings and have opted to record in 48khz going forward (I was using 44.1khz) so I hope this will make a difference.
