Today's sudoku is almost unbelievably constructed. It's called Pencilmark Sudoku and it's by Florian Wortmann. The title of the video will need to change but we don't want to spoil anything! Give it a try at the following link:
test.crackingthecryptic.com/s...
[Note: if you have problems loading this puzzle (you shouldn't but we've seen some reports in the comments then you could try f-puzzles in the following link):
f-puzzles.com/?id=yhxamj7n
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Some cells have been pencilmarked with all of their possible candidates.
In the video several extra were mentioned:
1) Sam Cappleman-Lynes has made an extremely clever 6x6x6 set of puzzles. We have released a solution video for this puzzle on Patreon and you can try to solve it yourself at these links (one to our software, one to penpa (which allows you to increase the size of the grids):

2) Christopher Adams' "Phistomefel Ring" crossword is very ingenious. You can play it here:

PS If we manage to reach 400,000 subscribers then we'll be releasing a video where Mark and Simon answer community questions! Please email us at crackingthecryptic@gmail.com if you have a good question for them :)

@@FlorianWortmann Thank you for explaining. Nice to know that Simon's "very weird and very beautiful trick" at time 22:56 can also be seen as a *finned X-wing.* Your puzzle is ok as it is. A difficult step, after a long series of very very fun and easy to spot bent triples does not make it less enjoyable, in my opinion. A puzzle becomes too difficult to be enjoyable only when it contains a neverending series of brutal steps which exponentially increases frustration and solving time. E.g., in my opinion these "90 minutes of madness" should have been smoothened in the second part, after a very enjoyable but brutal break-in: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Lhok4U63sfk.html

I was tempted to start out by first seeing if I could determine the final value of any cells by figuring out what initial values would be needed to generate this set of pencil-marked cells. It seemed to me that would be some sort of huge linear-algebra problem, but then I thought the tactic might depend on some assumptions that (a) I didn't realize I was making, and (b) were incorrect assumptions.

55:23 ... *phew* ... for me, this one was deceptively difficult. I was able to catch the 'fun' part early (with all the bent triples), but then I really bogged down for a stretch. Almost 10 minutes into staring at the grid when I suddenly spotted the Y-wing on the corner cells. Then a homeric laughter at the critical mass nuclear detonation of the flurry of activity when that one Y-wing exploded into heaven knows how many baby Y-wings. From there on rasonably plain sailing. 27:13 altogether. What a brilliant puzzle! No doubt Simon just cracked it wide open from the word go... Florian, a golden buzzer from me - no reservations!

I mean yes but when you’ve been solving killer XVs and skyscraper puzzles for the last several months and you get puzzles where you have to color the entire grid in before you get a digit by the coloring, it seems kind of silly when you go ‘oh hang on, normal sudoku rules apply too’ and place a five or something

Probably worth mentioning that the Phistomefel Ring is an American style crossword, so even those of us who struggle with easy cryptics can solve it with, if not ease than at least within a reasonable time frame. Very enjoyable. Has some of the really witty sort of American style clues that I enjoy. Puzzle was very enjoyable, although at some point correcting typos with the undo button started to cause the software to randomly delete and reset some given pencil marks. Needed to refer to the start of the to restore my given pencil marks a few times. Bit of a spoiler for Phistomefel Ring comment below to add to my recommendation: . . . . . . . . If anyone remembers when Simon and Mark used to showcase advanced cryptics on the channel, and loved the idea of them but didn't think they'd be able to get good enough at cryptics to get to the really intriguing end game steps, Phistomefel Ring is an American style crossword with an end game that feels like it could be from an Advanced Cryptic, at least to little old me who struggles with cryptics to the point that I've only been able to enjoy advanced cryptics vicariously via Simon and Mark on the channel.

I had the same problem with the given pencil marks getting messed up after pressing undo. I was too far in to want to restart, so just restored those cells to their starting state by looking at the start of the video, and then removed options that were no longer available given the state of the rest of the puzzle. Also, 14:57 on Christopher Adams' "Phistomefel Ring" crossword with a couple of Google searches on clues I knew I didn't know. Also, knowing what a Phistomefel Ring is helped me considerably in finishing it, and it was also a necessary disambiguation to keep the soup from tasting of soap. :)

This is the last time I jump into a puzzle before even pressing play on the video. Got about halfway through my first go before I went and used crtl+z for the first time, the whole board turned white and refreshing just gave me a "this puzzle doesn't exist" screen that took a minute of refreshing to go away =/

Wow, the pencil mark is really useful, especially the starting 69 pair, it seems a clue to tell you to notice "pairs", not 2-pair but tuples,quadruples, etc. I also blocked on the eighth but with checking all possible candidates, I eliminated some numbers to clarify the blocking.

I'm having an issue where hitting undo will erase most/all of the built-in pencil marks. Not sure if that's an issue with the app or the puzzle setting. (It seems to happen intermittently so it may be hard to reproduce.)

This seems to be a test version of the software, as shown by the link. I’m playing on IPad and having a range of issues. The undo is not working fully and some of the given pencil mark have reversed between play sessions. Ie, if a cell starts with 1234 pencilled and I work out it can only be 1 or 2, when I come back 3 and 4 are pencilled and not 1 & 2

@nix_ 2 года назад
You can just keep undoing until the pencil marks come back, and then redo until you get back to where you were before. That fixes the issue, but you need to have an idea of when to stop pressing redo.

This is a very useful puzzle. I have never been able to scan for bent triples before, but after the first five I was able to spot them!
@rewolff2
@rewolff2 2 года назад
Simon, a trick you missed: at 18:40 you say: "one can go in 4 places in box 4". That's not true: you've got a "doubleton" on three boxes forming a "bent triple" looking at box 4. So a 1 in box 6 forces the 1 in box 9, forces the 1 in box 7, so now there are 4 ones looking into box 4 and the one is placed in box 4. So whichever you chose in box 6 (or 7 or 9) it forces ONE place in box 4. So just like box 6,7 and 9, the 1 in box 4 can only go in 2 places! easy-peasy! :-)

Lots of (sort of) Schrödinger cells and one Chekhov's quadruple in row 8 which, let's face it, was too perfect for r8c3 to ever have ended up as a 3. Really beautiful, and pretty amazing to set something that looked quite minimal to begin with, yet signposted an eagle-eyed solver along the correct path so elegantly, and still put up enough of a fight in the finale. Very impressed.

Rules: 03:19 Let's get cracking: 04:00 And how about this video's Simarkisms?! By sudoku: 5 (11:50, 15:52, 16:24, 17:56, 24:29) Naked Single: 3 (14:21, 15:08, 19:24) Maverick: 3 (01:43, 01:46, 06:19) Beautiful: 3 (06:35, 23:20, 26:03) Incredible: 3 (02:08, 02:11, 27:29) Lovely: 2 (15:38, 24:34) Extraordinary: 2 (00:55, 26:30) Of All Things: 2 (11:52, 16:24) Bobbins: 1 (18:46) Cooking with Gas: 1 (16:22) Sorry: 1 (20:51) Bother: 1 (10:59) Secret: 1 (10:42) The Answer is: 1 (14:50) Out of Nowhere: 1 (17:00) Nonsense: 1 (04:28) Clever: 1 (02:40) First Digit in the Grid: 1 (10:03) Gorgeous: 1 (14:30) Take a Bow: 1 (27:33) FAQ: Q1: What is a Simarkism? A1: A Simarkism is something that Simon and Mark typically or frequently say. Q2: How do you do this so fast? A2: I'm not made of flesh and blood, but of sand ... Q3: Why don't you include 'XX' and 'YY'? A3: Probably it's already on the list ('Scooby-Doo' for example), but not mentioned in this video. But if you think it's not, tell me what you'd like me to include and there's a good chance I'll add it! Q4: You missed 'XX' at 'YY:ZZ'! A4: That could very well be the case! Human speech is hard to understand for computers like me, especially British sometimes! Point out the ones that I missed and maybe I'll learn! Q5: Could you turn these statistics into videos? A5: I've been playing around with the idea and I'm open to input as to what people would like to see. Let me know if you are interested in this and/or have suggestions.

19:23 and/or 19:27 should be made a Simarkism as well, even if it's usually one or another of several variants. "Oh! Is that a naked single I see before me?" and "Not in a suggestive way, but in a Sudoko way."

What a fun break-in. I usually have trouble spotting Y-wings so it was a treat to find the first one and then follow the cascade! I got stuck for a long while looking for further logic--I spotted the x-wing-ish thing with 1s but was missing the 46 pair in c1 bc I'd neglected to cancel an extraneous 5 candidate I'd Goodliffed into being. Always be scanning! Also ran afoul of the undo function, which suddenly erased many given pencil marks.
