Dear Dr. Kim, I live in Israel and plan to come to the USA to have PAE, Is Mounth Sinai Hospital in NYC a good place to have PAE, or would you recommend a different hospital for this procedure? I will thank you very much if you will helpme with n answer/
I had a 6 1/2 hour PAE last spring. It was very hard on me. My prostate was not that big (40 grams) Results were poor. Don't do it without consulting a Urologist first. Remember, Urologists and Interventional Radiologists are in competition with each other. They don't consult with each other very well.
Usually, PAE takes around 2 hours to perform. Results can certainly vary depending on prostate size, prostate shape, and other clinical characteristics unique to each patient. Otherwise, data suggests clinical success rates of 80-90%. We evaluate our patients in the clinic/office prior to making procedural decisions and collaborate with our urology colleagues for appropriate patient selection.
PAE has similar longevity as other prostate procedures. It can also be performed more than once and does not preclude patients from pursuing other prostate procedures in the future.
