Advancing with Watercolor: Cafe Sepia - Composition

Continuing today with my series on Cafes here on RU-vid - this week with thoughts on composition. In this video I demonstrate a few tips on placing your center of interest and some thoughts about building around that. The cafe is a chaotic place and my subjects don't always site in the "right" place - also they tend to get up and leave before Ive finished.
Named Cafe Sepia - well, because I am using Sepia as the only color - a practice that makes painting more interesting.
It is helpful to know how the visual artist looks at the world. It may seem that this does not need explanation but in truth the artist looks at the world in different ways to help them to process the complexity and arrive at a simple beginning. This is a technique like any other and the are tools and methods we use to trick the eyes to see the world in a simple fashion. These methods help the beginner as well as the mature artist.

I love this painting. I found the 'ugly' stage lasted most of the painting - and then the REVEAL! Such a great feeling. [I don't want to see a copy of a photo]. I only found your channel today. Thank you Gary. Have SUBSCRIBED. from Oz

We are in extended lockdown here in Ireland and I am delighted to have found your channel, I have learned so much watching your videos and the commentary is easy and relaxing. I started painting with oils then moved to acrylics. However, I love painting Plein Air and I found out only recently that the watercolor medium is the best for outdoors, in terms of the amount of stuff you have to carry, packaging, and carrying wet canvases, imagine setting up in a cafe with your oil stuff ??
@GaryTuckerArtist
@GaryTuckerArtist 3 года назад
Frankly Yes Ha ha- if you started unpacking your oil painting gear in the cafe you would be asked to leave - watercolor seems to be tolerated but I always try to let the management know what I’m doing and also be discreet

Thank you Gary for so generously sharing your talent. When watching you paint I often think of the frase ( Painter Of Light) which has been coined by several artists, originally William Turner. You have an incredible talent of capturing light and understanding how to do so. I'm looking forward to your Online Classes in 2021. Thanks again.

Thanks so much, this is wonderful! I will try to paint it this weekend. I tried to paint your "Winter Thaw" and it's now my favourite of all. What I love about all your watercolours is that they leave so many things for the viewer to complete, which really gives a sense of freedom and breathing. And it gives your unique style, too... I love it! All the best from Berlin, Germany :)

This was as mesmerizing as ever Gary, thank you very much. It made me think of composition more than I actually do. I at least, am a victim of what I see in a photograph or in front of me. I should change these bad habits. I was given a book of J. Singer Sargent's watercolours for Xmas and remember when you mentioned him as an inspiration. Your brushstrokes are very similar.

Thanks. That was a nice start to the day while I waited for my coffee to cool. I have masking fluid but never dared use it yet. Mind you over the past horrible year I barely touched a brush since my classes were all cancelled. I also have white gouache so maybe my masking fluid will last a long time! Thanks again and take care in those cafes( ours are all closed).

Wonder how you decide whether to use a porcelain plate or a palette. My impression is that you like to limit the number of colours you use in any given painting to maintain harmony … so a porcelain plate with 4 or 5 colours is just fine.

@@GaryTuckerArtist Oh good. I’ve had good luck with Princeton long round 3950 velvet touch from Jackson’s as a nice synthetic sablelette replacement. Also I like Jackson’s Raven s.528 (br5282) and/or Raphail’s more expensive petit-gris imitation squirrel mops, as I figure squirrels need their tails more than I do. Furred production animals suffer greatly and I want no part of it. (I receive no compensation for recommending these brands, just offering alternatives that work for me, as I really liked the now out of stock loew Cornell ultra rounds as well.) Best, Yvonne
